Drones in game, broken?

Submitted by CP1985 on Mon, 2006-10-02 19:42. Space Empires V General

Hi, all new to the forum here. I appologize if this has been mentioned already but I'd like to point out a possible bug. I started a new game, and apparently I was very close to another empire. Only a couple of turns passed before my system was invaded and colonized by the Amonk'krie. I thought oh what the heck, as long as they dont attack me. Sure enough they attacked my homeplanet. I then started building anti ship drones. (I had turned drones on from the start on the technology page..) I was attacked for a second time, and this time I had an Anti-Ship Drone (Tachyon..for destroying weapons..) In combat I launched the unit but it disappeared. I couldnt see it and it did nothing. I didnt think much of it, but then I designed Anti-Planet drones and launched them at their colonies in my system. The same thing happened. The drone refused to move. (I've checked both units to make sure they have the correct strategy and engines lol.) Might there be something im doing wrong? Maybe I have the wrong engines on the design or something? Has anyone else encounted drones not working? They only do not move or do nothing in combat, but they move normally in space. Am I doing something wrong? Im assuming they work the same as in SEIV.

I'm not 100% sure about this

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Tue, 2006-10-03 00:11.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I think drones and fighters like ther rest of your units need both supply and ordinance in SE:V, try adding some to your drones and see if they work.l

They do, BUT!

Drones are bugged in the demo and will not move in combat even if they have full supplies.

You think thats bad....

Submitted by Nekora on Tue, 2006-10-03 03:39.

try attacking a colony, even when the enemy population reaches zero the colony survives, and any further attempt to attack it only lasts a few seconds, notenough to do any real dammage

Drones

Submitted by evilginger on Sun, 2006-11-05 05:26.

I know that they where bugged and didn’t work in the original demo but I have not tried them since the new demo came out so I am not sure they just used to hang there. I also thought that the engines stored enough suply to last them a combat if not a tactical move

I use drones all the time in

Submitted by SirKid on Sun, 2006-11-05 08:21.

I use drones all the time in 1.8 and for the most part they work ok, I mean they attack the target. Here are the two settings I use, Design Type (Ship Attack or Planet Attack) and Strategy (Drone Attack). The problem I have is that they never run out of supplies and expire like the rules say they should. In my game there are left over drones form conquered enemies still on the map.

Hope this helps.

Drones vs Fighters

Submitted by Helker on Sun, 2006-11-05 09:56.

I never used Drones very much; I prefer using fighters.

What's the real difference between the two?

Why did you choose to research in Drones instead of Fighters?

in 1.8 drones are very much

Submitted by Jaxem on Sun, 2006-11-05 10:10.

in 1.8 drones are very much broken, but to the point where they are really good. try using 10 drones instead of a minefield of 50, it will do the same job. the drones don't actually die when the run into things, they respawn after combat when they should be removed. this makes a drone minefield, especially with powerful drones, pretty much unstoppable. they are very powerful in themselves, a single drone with modest anti planet warheads doing incredible (75%+) damage to homeworld planets. buckle a decent shield generator on there and you're good to go. another concern is drone movement. no matter how many engines i put on a drone they go fast. i think its something like 26 in combat. also, i can't control drones. I'd like to be able to make drones for different functions or at least be able to tell them what ship i want them to hit, but that doesn't work. however, drones are very powerful despite the lack of control (regardless of design type/strategy). really they are just huge kamikaze fighters.

Drone not dying

Submitted by Halikar on Sun, 2006-11-05 21:50.

I've only used drones once, and when I did the anti-planet drones would attack the planet, destroy the warhead component, damage the planet, then fly away. It's kind of nice to pick them back up, repair them, and fire them again, but I expected them to be destroyed on impact.

I use drones and fighters. I

Submitted by SirKid on Mon, 2006-11-06 10:08.

I use drones and fighters. I just like the thought of drones. I like to build them on frontier planets and launch them at the enemy planets and ships that I don't have ships to deal with. Think of the enemy sitting there saying "Oh crap, here comes another one of those darn drones." Of course the language would be more colorful.

I agree that in 1.08 they are way to powerful and need to be toned down. I took out 3 dreadnoughts with 6 drones once and had some left over after the fight. I would like to see drones become a nuisance weapon not an all powerful weapon.

Use them to check the other side of warp point for enemy guards. Use them to make the enemy expend ammo and take some minor damage before sending in the fleet. Use them during fleet combat to distract PD from you fighters. All kinds of uses.
