Ramming 101

Submitted by Sir Spiff on Mon, 2007-05-21 07:51. Space Empires V FAQs

I tried my hand at focusing on ramming ships the other day, moving much of my attention from weapons to armor, bigger ships, and better engines. It's a lot of fun to see enemies line up, just to have my ships plow straight through 'em all. However, I'd like to know some more about ramming, namely almost everything.

Apparently, the smaller is supposed to be destroyed. Is that always the case? Can a heavily armored level 2 destroyer win against a heavily armored level 3 destroyer?

I know armor is a huge help when ramming, but what about shields? Do they offer similar benefits? And if you use crystaline armor when ramming, would that recharge your shields?

Do solar sails give a mobility boost in battle, as well?

Can very large ships, like Dreadnoughts and Baseships, win when ramming Space Stations?

Better idea, get drones...out fit them with war heads...build lots....and send them after the enemy....thats a good time....they kamikaze against the enemy ships and BAM 1-2 drones can take out a nicely armored enemy distroyer or even cruiser if your tech level is high enough.

Drones are expensive...
But anyways, solar sails don't affect movement in combat. Only outside. Laughing out loud

True, but don't they count as "units"? hehehehe so a game with 200 ship maximum, get some drones wipe em out...done.....

But i usually use drones for scouting and such =)

Drones, aside from annoying AI issues, die. A lot. A ship, on the other hand, can ram and destroy several ships and live to be repaired. Also, ramming with a ship is a whole lot more fun than ramming with an overpriced super missile.

My only use for drones is in remote planet killing. Send drones with cloaking devices into enemy territory and watch the fun as you decloak enough firepower to destroy the world right on top of homeworld! MWAHAHAHAHA!

Likely Mods have some say in this. Ramming is dictated by your total structure points I think, hence why Armour is such a huge factor. Besides that, you're likely the pioneer for learning the subtler mechanics of ramming. Experiment.

Actually doing and learning stuff myself? An intriguing concept. Well, I guess there's a reason for having the simulator.

ROFL

Yes expensive, but useful...

I did some fiddling. The neighbors didn't like the racket, so I experimented in the simulator.

It's all about total structure. I had a heavily armored frigate win against an almost empty space station. It doesn't seem to matter whether the structure comes from armor or cargo bays. Shields seem to count twoards structure just like armor or components. Damage taken also doesn't affect who wins or how much damage you take. Ramming doesn't count as a "hit" with regards to crystaline armor.

Victory and damage in ramming are determined by your total structure versus their total structure, be it from shields, armor, or components. The greater the difference the less damage the victor takes.

Since "size" would be better stated as "resilience," ramming becomes a combined issue of the unit's size and structural density. You want to cram on as much health onto a ramming ship as you possibly can, not only so you can win in ramming, but so you take minimal damage in the process.

Basic armor is by far the densest component in the game, far beyond all the special armors, making it the front runner. A perfect rammer has all the standard armor it can hold. The ideal rammer would thhen have strong shields, because you can only have so much armor, and damage to shields is trivial. Powerful engines are a must in order to actually reach the target. Everything else, like point defense is for addaptation to circumstances, whose necessity depends on what kind of support these ships get. Repair for the armor and resupply for the shields would be essential in the long run, though.

Ramming is a strategy best suited to the close-combat of defending and assaulting warp points, or decloaking in the middle of enemy forces.

Edit: After further use, I say that speed is now the most important element in ramming. It sucks trying to ram someone moving at your pace. Engine destroying weapons are also a huge help.

I've been thinking, shouldn't the speed of a vehicle also affect the amount of damage done to the target? To me it would make sense that a ship traveling at 13km/s would do more damage than a ship traveling at 1km/s. I'm pretty sure that this could be modded in, but it should have been in the stock game.

Thank you Sir Spiff, for your excellent report. I haven't done anything with ramming yet, but it's now on my list of things to try. A hot warp point will surely be a good place to set up a rambush!

That's my new favorite word.

Anyway, this sounds very cool. I'll have to come up with an empire dedicated to ramming, immediately. This'd be awesome... armor is so cheap, both to build and research. With this kind of an empire, all you'd need is armor and engines, which I always research anyway.

Screw weapons! Full speed ahead!

You still need a serious investment in bigger ships, and engines alone won't cut it; you need engine destroying weapons. You won't need much, but you'll definitely need some. Or tractor beams. Those're fun.

Damage the ship has already taken doesn't affect ramming damage? Are you sure? That would be a big bug if so. Also, shields on the ramming vessel aren't supposed to count for the damage done to the target (unless Aaron decided to change the physics from SE4); the target's shields are supposed to absorb damage though.

What do the settings in settings.txt mean?
Ram Ship Source Modifier Percent := 60
Ram Ship Target Modifier Percent := 100

Both shields should be considered, they should detract from eachother until one gives, then it would detract from the armor then both armor would detract from eachother then internal structure. Speed and Vector should also be taken into consideration, if feasable.

Ramming should destroy the losing ship, take into consideration of the Galaxy Class (Enterprise style from Next Generation) Starship that was destroyed so easily by a single ship which rammed it when the Federation sent an invasion force through the wormhole.
