Underground Satellites! |
I'm sure that someone has noticed this before. A planet with unlaunched satellites can when under attack launch them to the center of the planet! This makes surgical destruction of a planet's defenses very difficult. I've found that the best approach to opening up a planet guarded by space stations, and orbitting satellites is to attack with fighters. It's often possible to allocate just enough fighters to wipe out the orbital defenses then to put the weapons on hold as soon as the job is done in order to minimize damaging the planets facilities and population. Unfortunately when a planet launches its satellites underground I find I can't use fighters against them because the satellites are out of range for fighter weapons. Attacking them requires a ship. If I zoom in so close that I can see into the core of the planet I can specifically target the satellites, but the planet usually looses alot of people.
Will the underground satellite bug ever be fixed?

Re: Underground Satellites!
Well, I guess bugged sats are better than NOt being able to assualt planets at all...

I have never seen this one but if you have and its reproducable I would definatly sent Aeron a save as Its the surest way to get it fixed
Re: Underground Satellites!
I't reproducable every time for me.

Re: Underground Satellites!
I've seen this before, but at the time my fleets were getting wasted by weapons platforms because my ships (who had a larger weapons range than those platforms) wouldn't fire on them. Thank god that bug's been fixed, but it was fun thinking up a strategy to glass those planets despite the weapons platforms.

Re: Underground Satellites!
Ah hah! So that's what it is! I was being fired at by the planet and I couldn't figure out what it was or where it was coming from. But what you said make sense.
I destroyed all the visible satellites but still got my *ss handed to me by the "planet" shooting my ships down. After the battle (or next turn? I can't remmeber exactly) I looked at the planet and it said it had two satellites. So...the satellites were inside the planet!
Fighters can't reach them? Jeez... I guess the only solution is to draw their fire with some ships and then capture the planet with ground troops. G*d, I hate losing ships to sats......
Re: Underground Satellites!
I've seen this one as well. 'Tis annoying, especially when you're relying on lots of close-range ramming ships. I couldn't even get a shot to go that deep.
Re: Underground Satellites!
I've seen sats launched in combat in the center of the planet several times myself, and it is indeed an annoying bug.
In Tactical combat, my usual workaround is to take one or a few of my troop transports or support ships which have only point-defense weapons, put them back on auto-target, and give them a manual movement path that is basically a strafing pass from outside the sat & planet's range on one side through/over the planet's center and out of range on the far side. The computer should automatically pick up the sats as valid targets for the point defense as it gets into range and take them out, or at least make progress and you can try again if you have the ships; but since the point-defense weapons can't target the planet you don't damage anything you were planning on capturing intact.
If you have fighters set up with CSP orders that attack units but not other things, you can also try sending a small flight of them "through" the planet on auto-target.
