What use are sensors?

When you can select "can see all of system currently in" in the game setup. Do basic sensors have any special properties that would still make them useful or are they just wasted tonnage?

Also, can the AI see all of the system as well cos with this selection it still builds sensors into its designs which seems like wasted tonnage unless there are anything special about them?

you still cant see ships and units unless you have them and in order for the AI not to use them it would necesitate a set of ship sttion and unit designs which did not include them. Its easyer to tollerate am minor wastage of space in games with these setings chosen than risk the AI not puting them on ships etc when they are needed

Odd, the last time I played a game like that I could've sworn I could still see enemy ships and stuff even though I didn't build sensors on my ships. I know I'd need scanners to see inside them outside of combat though... I see your point about the AI though.

Cheers.

If your technology level is high enough, even Basic Sensors can see past lower levels of cloaking. The AI seems to sometimes like to develop just a little bit of cloaking technology if it can, and put a level 2 or 3 cloak on just about everything; it's handy to have a sensor tech level lead sufficient that your basic sensors can see past that.
