What's the best MOD?

schaeen's picture
Submitted by schaeen on Tue, 2007-05-15 23:48. SE:V MODs

I'm most interested in improving the AI but all the "balancing" changes are nice too. In these regards, what do you think is the best MOD? Who has tried them all?
As I understand it, there are three basically:
IRM - most extensive
GidMOD - most recent
Unnamed - most nameless

Smiling

It seems like IRM has more extensive modifications. But are they good modifications?

Is the AI better in one of the three or is the AI just as competitive in all three?

the most used, as i think, are the irm and the balance-mod.
both improve the ai a lot. while irm changes a big part of the gameplay the balance-mod mainly just balances the stock-version.

if you like the stock gameplay the balance-mod would be something for you.
if you are looking for a different style of gameplay you should check out the irm-mod.

the gridmod i haven´t used yet (will soon do so), so i can´t say anything to it.

as for your question about the best mod....you can´t answer that question!
it depends on your gamestyle wich mod you would prefer.

greetings

personaly I would go with the IRM the BM is also good but I dont like the changes to the tech tree Captain Qwock made. The namless AI mod is mostly the IRM and BM AI adapted to a stock game

The question is impossible to answer. There is no metric that could be used to determine what the "best" mod is, objectively. Such a label is completely subjective, depending entirely upon personal taste.

Unnamed's AI mod has no balance changes; Balance Mod is all about balance; IRM is about adding new stuff to the game, and is not necessarily balanced (according to the author) in the weapons department.

the IRM has the better tech tree, with lots of new weapons and tech, but it still has some major gameplay issues, like the AI never getting beyond frigate-sized ships, and (I noticed but not sure if its not the same with stock game) UNBEARABLY SLOW turn processing...

Here is the deal:

I like my mod the best, because it is turning SE5 into the game I want to play.

I imagine that every mod maker feels the same way about their mod, and this is as it should be.

I suggest everyone just try several mods (since they are thankfully easy to activate/deactivate) and play the one(s) that most suits the way they want to play.

And don't forget to check out the other mods too. Some of them are multiplayer only, though, but multiplayer is the best way to play SE anyways.

I wonder if the AI is smarter in Gideon's MOD......

Well a , I tried all mods and actually I'm playing A Gidmod and i must say that i really love it , the IRM mod seems dead now , and there was one thing that was wrong for me with the BM mod , as the computer would build research centers and give me research points but later in the game it would build research centers and my research points would remain the same (BM 1.06) , i didn't tried another game of BM yet so i don't know if that problem would repeat itself but that's a great mod too , and now i am really satisfied with Gidmod , i hope the creator of this mod will continue his good work

Thanks for the recommendation. Can you tell us what exactly you like about Gidmod? You seem to like it better than IRM, yes? Or you just want to go with Gideon's mods since he seems to want to continue refining his changes?

That's my question. Which do YOU think is best (not what is ontologically the best) and why. Which is best in your opinion?

And you answered! I look forward to seeing how you think GidMod compares.

Cheers

If IRM wasn't dead I'd have to say it was the best, but as it stands I like gidmod. Balance Mod is the best multiplayer mod.
