Help - Cannot build on new planets

Submitted by Steaton on Tue, 2007-05-15 07:53. Space Empires V General

Hi,

I am quite new to SEV but having expanded my empire the last three planets I have colonised have 'never' in the production queue even though I have plenty of excess resources (minerals, biological and radioactives).

Other planets can still build no problem.

Is there a limit on the number of planets you can colonise? Some other kind of resource/limit I am missing?

ps I'm using v1.35 with BM1.06

Cheers,

Steve

check the population if its nill that will be the cause and you will need some population transports

Yep, I think that should be the problem. Your colony ships only load population automatically when they are in orbit of one of your planets when you execute the colonize command.

Planetary conditions could be another reason if you took population along. On bad planets the few colonists on a standard colony ship can die off pretty fast. Better use 1 or 2 cargo slots on your colony ship design so you have ample population to keep the colony alive.

This may be a BM problem. I have not had this problem since SE III. I have not had it in the latest version and patch 1.35. Today I installed BM and immediately had a problem occasionally.

I noticed in stock SEV that most of my colony planets did not show the little man icon. It may be that some change in BM is causing a hidden bug in SEV to show up.

Check the automatic colonisation amount in settings.txt. By default it is one - that is, you get 1 population even with no pop in cargo of your colony ship. I belive BM changed this field to zero.

Colonizing a planet - even with an empty colony ship - should still result in 1M people being placed on the planet. This default 1M is overridden if the colony ship carries any population. I'm not sure why this bug showed up.

If the planets do have population on them, check to see that they aren't rioting (in the races screen of planet details, check the population happiness/loyalty).

I have never seen that. It has always been as I have observed: no pop, no queue.

I saw the same thing. Even an empty colony ship should provide 1M population upon colonization. I've also seen the 0M colony happen though. It was fine in stock, but something seems to have changed of late in 1.33 and 1.35 that was fine before. Perhaps it only happens in IRM? I remember it was fine in stock and I haven't played stock in some time now.

Note that the Balance Mod does not have the automatic colonization value in settings.txt activated. The reason for this is to allow the player to colonize with different breating populations and not make a planet domed with the automatic 1M of their native race.

I find it less annoying to sometimes scrap this 1M pop instead of forgetting to load population in the colony ship and having a colonised but useless planet.
This is also annoying when you put troops, fighters, sats or weapon platforms in colony ship cargo: if you give the load commands in the wrong order (in simultaneous games), the ship will leave without colonists.
There is also the matter of the "load" order showing as taking one move (when it doesn't), so you have to count the number of loads you make or give the move order first, then move it down in the orders list.

I would be really glad if this option is re-activated again.

I believe you can use the "Transfer Cargo" order in simultaneous games if your colony ship is in orbit of the planet with the wanted cargo.

Yes, but transfer is a lot slower than load: for some reason you have to double-click on EACH unit you want to load. (condensed view checkbox is greyed out) This becomes VERY annoying when you have to load 20+ troops.

I should make a note of that bug to MM. It should allow condensed view for transfer regardless of simultaneous or sequential mode.

The problem seems to be that in BM automatic transfers to new colony ships sometimes does not happen. This seems to work fine in stock SEV.

It's not actually a problem per se. It's when colony ships are given "move to" orders before "colonize" orders that result in no colonists being loaded on the ship. For example, many players use colonizers as explorers and as such give them move orders first and forgetting to load population etc.

Note that if you prefer the automatic 1M colonization amount, you can re-activate it in settings.txt.

I've been handling multiple populations in stock, and the 1M never gets added as long as I have another race present in the colony ship. Has it added that 1M for you, still? I thought that bug got fixed in the .20's.

Where in settings??

That is a bad thing to unhitch. Sorry but loading pop should be automatic no matter what you wis to do with a ship that has a colony item in it.

having 1m crew on a ship is retarded, if you colonise a planet and you've not loaded population onto the colonizer in the first place then live with it and shift population there with a transport, or tell another nearby colonizer that has got population on it to drop then load.
Just get used to loading pop before sending your colony scouts off, it's not that hard really.

automaticly loading doesnt work if you want to send the coloniser to annother planet, pick up a diferent atmospheric breathers then go colonize a planet.

Yes, but it's a lot harder to do on PBW (where it poses problem).

I could get used to if the two other bugs (well two bugs and one lacking feature: a way to easily measure distance) didn't exist...

which order are you using to load?
use the remote load (hotkey o) click the planet, click population. then give move orders.

If this indeed the case, then I can make the switch back.

I'd rather you didn't. having crew = 1m population interferes with my suspension of disbelief

You can simply think about it in the way that 1m is the smallest amount of pop the game can show, thus even 1 person (or alien) will be shown as 1m.

1 person on a colony will not grow. A few dozen from a ship's crew (better hope your people are egalitarian Eye-wink) will take centuries to reach 2M. That doesn't really work.

Most of the growth on new colonies is made by immigration anyway... and you don't know what kind of alien it is: maybe 1 is enough, maybe they need 7... Smiling
