Cargo and Cargo Bays?

Submitted by CapitalShip on Mon, 2007-05-07 21:55. Space Empires V FAQs

I am confused as to what 'cargo' actually is in SE5. For example, I built a freighter but it could not carry anymore supplies then a frigate ship I built with added supply storage. What does SE5 refer to as 'cargo'? What are some uses of freighters and the cargo bays? I know you can carry passengers and troops but are there any other types of cargo? It seems like a freighter should be restricted to have either 50% cargo bays or 50% storage such as ordnance or supply. Or can ordance and supplies actually be loaded into cargo bays?

Ordnance and supplies cannot be loaded into cargo bays. They can only be carried by their specialized storage components, engines (which carry supplies) and weapons (which carry ordnance).

In addition to population and troops, you can load fighters, mines, satellites, drones, and weapon platforms into cargo bays.

Note that cargo bays do not allow you to USE the items I mentioned (i.e. you can't launch fighters from a cargo bay); you can only move them from place to place.

Note, however, that if you have even one unit launch component on a ship mostly full of cargo bays, you can launch and recover units of that type up to the full amount of cargo space on the ship. A cargo ship with a single fighter bay will be so slow launching them in combat that it's not terribly effective, but for strategic purposes having the flexibility to move fighter wings around your empire without taking up expensive dedicated carriers is useful.
