SE4 shipsets in SE5

Submitted by Lector Rae on Tue, 2007-05-01 23:45. Space Empires V General

I'm new to SEV and SE in general, but so far it is a great game bugs or not.

Is it possible to use SE4 shipsets in SEV? And how would one go about making that happen?

Thanks!

hi there,

i´m no modder but from what i know it´s not so simple. the old SEIV shipsets are in 2d and the SEV ones are in 3d.

if you are interested in this, check out the SEV-Mod forum here, i think there was a manual for modding somewhere. maybe you´ll find more info there.

other good adresses are
http://www.spaceempires.net/home
where you can find already done shipsets for SEV

or the wiki page wehre you may find more information on that.

There was talk about converting 2d ship sets to 3d but I am not sure if that came to any thing.

you can't really 'convert' them. seIV sets are made by making 3d models and taking a screenshot of a render.

seV uses the models themselfs, you can't just use the origonal 3d models that were used to render the pictures that make up the SEIV shipsets as these tend to have way to many polygons. low poly modling is an art where you make things look cool by doing tricky things with the textures. so in essence, you need to start from scratch to make seV shipsets.

albi_joe over at Spaceempires.net is working on converting SE4 sets for SEV use. The problem is that it's essentially using a reference photo for a painting based off it. You have a visual guide for where you're headed for the most part, but you're still working from scratch.

The modelers are slowly coming out of the woodwork though. The more they pop up, the more often new shipsets will be released. Laughing out loud

Supposedly SEV was supposed to contain a 'top-down' mode, that would allow one to use SEIV shipsets.

It does have a top-down feature. You just have to click a button above the command console at the bottom right-hand side of the screen.

The courage to endure.

Hmm you know, If SEIV were pictures of 3d ships, then if you asked the original creator real nicely, he/she could probably send you the original 3d models eh?

*HINT HINT*

Assuming you can get a hold of the people and they still have the old 3D models, it's still just reference material. There's no way they can ever work with SEV's engine (or any other engine). Normal modelling and low poly modelling are two very different things. You can't simply convert one to the other.

My apologies if I just ruined an illusion of yours. And no. I don't have time to help re-create old shipsets. If I ever make one, I'll share it with you lot though.
