IRM 0.99 Multiplayer

Submitted by Khizlek on Tue, 2007-05-01 09:26. Space Empires V Multiplayer

Just a new thread to both estimate the amount of people who would want to play a multiplayer IRM game and to try to get more people on board.

If yes would you prefer for it to be PBW or PBEM?

What would be the amount of time taken before a turn occurs?

Do you think some house rules would have to be used (and if yes then what kind of house rules)?

I'm tired of waiting for the PBW server to get IRM installed and I'm not too happy with being restricted to Simultaneous turns (from what I can see, it's going to severely hamper micromanagement). Personally I'd prefer a 1v1 or 3-way FFA PBEM Sequential Turns game (too many players and it's impossible to publish a write-up as the game progresses because you can only write about events everyone knows of). With a soft max turn-limit of 3 days to cater for unexpected RL occurances that get in the way (if it's PBEM, we can't enforce it automatically so it would be an etiquette thing).

House rules? Only one that comes to mind would be what to do about racial traits - namely Natural Merchants, +Reproduction and +Env Resistance. We could create a separate IRM copy solely for multiplayer use where the Racial Traits costs are changed. Oh and I'm going to insist that IRM folder has my Formations_TaskForces.txt in it, which adds 2 custom formations.

The rest would be down to agreeing upon individual games' settings with the very few opponents you'd have per game.

Well, maybe I would join a non-PBW game after all, if we use Tactical Combat...

I'd love to do Tactical Combat too, but... then it becomes a "attacker gets stupidly high advantage" because Tactical Combat (at least if I'm allowed to touch it) really is that powerful. I mean, I can even do a Parthian Shot with a DUC provided we're at equal max speed and equal max range (and yes, you cannot shoot me back while I do this even though we have equal range). Or there's the full micro possibilities this introduces, such as the "Gattling Meson Blaster chain" where I have 10 Meson Blasters (or anything really) and stagger their shots so I have minimal overkill/downtime.

But anyway, if it's a Sequential Turn game, then there really isn't going to be any difference between PBW and PBEM. There's no AI to wait turns for. We need to 'download files after being notified by email' in both cases. Difference is: we can do Sequential Turn in PBEM and we can get started now (er, after discussing game settings, etc).

If game speed is a concern, then even with only 3 players it would be better to do a Simultaneous turns game... since, unless I'm mistaken, in a Sequential turns game you have to wait the previous player make his turn before you can play yours!

Otherwise I would like to play in a Old quadrant - you'll have to adapt to your environment in this kind of qudrant!

Re: IRM 0.99 Multiplayer

Game speed is a non-issue for me. Seems us 3 have been thinking about an IRM multiplayer the most, so a 3-way FFA between us three? I prefer Sequential, Blue Templar seems to prefer Simultaneous. ColonialAdmiral, which do you want? And I fail to see why PBEM would be different from PBW when both involve 'uploading a save file' and 'downloading the save file to the savegame folder'.

I'm sure there's more who seek an IRM multiplayer game - we can set up more than 1 game to accommodate people as appropriate (RL time constraints, etc).

Very well, simultaneous turn. Do we want to impose any house rules or changes to Racial Trait costs? How many systems do you want (Medium sized usually means 50~60)? Starting Homeworld quantity and quality? Warp point positions? Intel allowed or not?

You know what goes into a game setting. If you've no preference (read: no reply by Saturday), I'll make the game as I see fit and send the settings.gsu to you so you can create an empire .emp file to send back to me. Or does someone else want to be the 'host' who processes everyone's turns at the end (note that nobody can take the next turn until host processes the turn)?

I do PBEM and I've no clue what MIME encoding is.

I'd like to go ahead and have random placement of warpoints. If you guys don't object, no intel, because alot of the features don't work. Oh, and another idea: Should we each start out with a different Homeworld type? (I.E. Gas, Rock, Ice) and then "can only colonise homeworld type"? Might be kind of nifty in a 3 way FFA...Laughing out loud I'm fine with anything, but I would really like to have random placement of warpoints.

Re: IRM 0.99 Multiplayer

No trading of colony modules would be interesting if we were only 3 players with different planet types... I will agree to do that with a 4 players game if we choose to have 2x2 players with the same planet type. (4 different atmospheres would be great).

I don't like the No Intel idea, since it looks like to me that in this game, you either go the intel way or the research way... but if you tell me that in IRM intel is broken, I will maybe try a research heavy empire for once in multiplayer...

BTW, is there some intel features that doesn't work in BM?

I'd like to play in a Old quadrant, size small to medium.
I's also like random warp points (but then medium quadrant, since it makes the systems faster to travel in).

Also, maybe 3 good planets and high starting resources: it will make a faster game start, and players will be less dependent on what their surroundings are.

Catastrophic events with high frequency. (I would like to see at least one of them during this game).
Max of the maximum ships and units.
No cheats.

Everything else default. And if there is no intel then technology sharing ALLOWED.

P.S.: You can't say Simultaneous turns are not faster than Sequaential, since in the first case all of the players can play their turns AT THE SAME TIME!
Believe me, I've played PBEMs in Alpha Centauri, it makes a HUGE turn speed difference!

Re: IRM 0.99 Multiplayer

My worries with Intel are from a post which mentioned that there are problems with switching targets with Intel ops. Even after you stop investing in an empire, even after that empire is Destroyed, you still get successful intel ops on that target. I can't remember whether this also meant you can't switch your points to a new target or not. Otherwise I'd have no issues with allowing Intel. Khizlek, I'll let you decide what to do with Intel as you PM me your email address.

As for Simultaneous vs Sequential - the turn speed is faster for the former as soon as you hit 3 players or more. For 2 players... wait can anyone process the turn once everyone's orders are collected? Still, I see your point in both players taking an hour at the same time, as opposed to one-after-another. Note that I'm in GMT+0 though, so due to timezones we're not going to be able to plough through turns very quickly.

I'll need email addresses to give you the settings.gsu for final reviewing and empire making.

I'd have to agree with BlueTemplar.

Only problem either way is if someone gives up or just takes the maximum possible time to send a turn with every turn. It can turn 12 turns that would normally be 12-14 days to the maximum of 24.

Even for a 1vs1 simultaneous turns are faster, because when the players don't play "at the same time", you can play 2 turns at once if the other player already sent his turn.

Alright, emailed all 3 of you with the .gsu - tentatively I've assigned "No Intel" on the basis that I don't think IRM has touched the Intel scripts (and the stock ones have problems as written above) whereas BM has. If you really don't like that, then we can agree to switch Intel on.

Assuming we go with No Intel: do not do a "trade all current tech" clause as that will transfer colony tech. In fact, we may as well say "no tech trade clauses" and only allow tech trade through one-off Trades and Gifts.

Files different between regular IRM0.99b3 and my version. Copy the IRM folder and name the copy "IRM 0.99b3 Psi", then overwrite the .txt files in this .zip with the ones in this copy folder.

Oh and yes, it's going to be PBEM as PBW still hasn't got IRM installed (I think the server is down again too). So after you review the .gsu settings file, make an empire and email me its .emp file.

Isn't 1.35 completely compatible with 1.33? The IRM game is now up on PBW, so apply there. I'll wait up to a week before starting, but it seems most of us are ready. We're fine with different ship sets not having exactly the same configuration of slots? Or should we impose this?
