Is the game compatible at all with Vista?

Submitted by wuffers on Sun, 2007-04-29 19:33. Space Empires V General

I'm trying to get the disk to load run on my new computer but am not having any luck. I can select the icon for setup from either disk drive and it sits there and spins as busy and doesn't do anything. I end up having to stop the program to get the computer to respond. A few questions:

1) Has anyone else gotten the game to install/work on Vista?
2) If so, are there any tricks you might share with me (trying to run as admin doesn't work either - tried it)

Any help would be appreciated. I had this working on my old computer and its a bit frustrating not to have to working on my new one.

Thanks!!

I'm having seperate problems, related I think to Vista x64 and NVidia drivers for the 8800 cards, but it installed fine. But then, I installed it via Steam, not CD. If all else fails, if your CD came with a CD key you could validate it on Steam and have it installed that way. But it works pretty well on my other Vista machine, so yes, it's basically compatible with Vista. Basically.

Go to Forums, Then Look for the Tech support forum. Enter and there is a thread called "Vista Support"

I think the last couple sentences sum it up: Vista + ATI = Good, Vista + NVidia = May the gods be with you (for SEV at least, I'm having a hard time with all indie games like Subspace with nvidia, but all the popular games run great)

I am having no problems running this in Vista 64bit with Nvidia. I did have trouble at first as i had mulitthreading active, but once i changed it back to False in settings.txt i had no problems. Oh and once they did the 1.33 update as it removed a file that Vista doesnt use.

Desdinova, that's interesting then, I've been having super-low framerates with my 8800GTS. I had Multithreading set to False; I've tried it on True, makes no difference that I can see. I've tried turning down/off everything in the drivers I can find. I assumed it had to be x64 + Nvidia drivers, since I've got an x64 with a much older ATI card that runs smooth as butter.

You've inspired me now to go sift through drivers some more... If all else fails, I might reinstall, see if that changes anything.

Reinstalled SEV and video drivers both; without changing a thing, tried it, and still no luck. Something with SEV + Vista x64 + 8800GTS/NVidia has the potential to conflict. YMMV.

I dont use MS vista but I would sugest contacting Aeron with all these issues as I am sure he will be interested in making the game work better with Vista which would also help you out

I also have the a similar issue with a similar config.

Framrate on main menu is 60ish, drops to 30ish when in the systems view, drops to 15ish when I open a menu, drops again if I open a menu from within that menu. Goes back to 30ish when back in system view.

System Specs: AMD Dual Core CPU, Vista 64bit, Nvidia 8800GTS grafics card.
