Transfer of technology after surrender

Submitted by Brad on Sun, 2007-04-29 17:06. Space Empires V FAQs

After an empire surrendered to me, I expected to get a huge boost in tech levels that I didn't have. I know they have cruisers, level 20 AP beams, higher levels of some facilities etc. But all I got was one single tech level in each tech that I didn't already have. Is it supposed to work this way or should I get everything they have?

Same with analysing ship components. I have level 1 armour, and I have captured ships with at least level 20. Analysing the ships only gives me a single extra level in armour.

As far as the ship analysis goes, that is correct. However, additional ships analyzed will continue to give you a level each until you get close to their level. At some point as your level approaches that of the captured ships, it becomes less and less likely that analyzing a ship will get you the next level. Does anyone know the actual chances?

If you use tactical combat, it's fairly easy to juggle capturing a bunch of ships from the AI. Doing so solely with strategic combat, especially against other human players, is harder but may still be useful sometimes.

Note that with the current ship capture system, it seems (reasonably enough) that evenly matched "boarding battles" take quite a while; during which time the ship may take quite a bit more damage or even be lost, if you can't or don't individually control who is shooting at whom. The keys to automated capture seem to be overwhelming boarding party advantage (at least 2:1 over the defenders), and specialized capture ships that are armed with shield depleters and if possible special weapons to reduce weapon effectiveness without doing damage.

Note that it is possible for multiple ships to contribute boarding parties at least under manual tactical control, but I'm not sure the strategic AI is smart enough to do that.
