Our System

Submitted by Tilarium on Sun, 2007-04-29 11:34. SE:V MODs

When hand building our system using Ergie's amazing generator, what would people recommend for the stats for the planets in our solor system?

Size:
Gravity:
Temperature:
Conditions:
Radiation:

I guess the same applys to our sun but it's easier to figure out then the planets. Also, how do people commend doing moons? Putting them next to the planet or just ignoring them altogather? I'm thinking just ignoring them because of the planets with lots of moons. It's to bad we can't put planets over astroid belts. I've actually seen it in the game, was pretty weird, but can't do it with the editor... not a complaint, I love the editor and will be taking full advantage of it!

I would leave moons out. Planets like Jupiter and Saturn are practically solar systems in and of themselves. SE5 doesn't support multiple planets on the same sector, which is what you would need to do. Otherwise, you would fill up too much space in the system map.

You could still put in "the moon" as we like to call it...you can probably google the stats...

Actually it does, and there's no problems on doing it.

However it might be asking too much to put the huge number of saterlites some of the gas giants have in the same sector even so. I would limit moons to the big ones for clarity

There ARE a few problems doing it. Mainly the smaller planet will clip in and out of the larger one. Gameplay wise it works fine.

Hmmm...interesting... If the clipping, etc., issues are resolved, then this could be quite useful to me.

Luna, the technical name for our moon is Luna. Eye-wink

Yeah, you would want to put Luna in. It is the largest satellite in our system, in comparison to its parent body (Earth). This means that its size alone would cause it to have a significant effect on anyone with practical space travel technology.

I'm going to be picky with the satellites. I'm gonna have Luna, Ganymede (Jupiter, largest satellite in the system), Titan (Saturn, larger then mercury and only satellite with a decent atmosphere if I remember), Ceres which is a planatoid in the astroid belt, and Pluto which I include in this writing only because it's not considered a planet anymore!

As for stats, what do people recommend? Those are the only major hangups with making our system. Wiki does have some listed but I don't really know how those equal the ones in the game.

Technically, technically, the name of the moon is the Moon.

Nope. The name of the Moon is Luna.
Just like the name of the sun is Sol.

No, it's Earth, the Moon, and the Solar System. The names you refer to are non-English names for the same objects, but are not the "International Astronomical Union" official English names. Sticking out tongue

---

Anyway, to make an useful contribution to the thread, I like your moon choices and for stock SE:V, limiting it to 1 or 2 max per planet is a good idea to be consistent with the other systems. For a FQM map, I'd add Jupiter's 4 big moons and give Uranus/Neptune 1 each.

Hey, there's an idea for a mod! Could you make a mod with only one huge Solar System? Even better than a mod, a quadrant type! And make each new game in this "quadrant" type unique by making the planets circle the sun, and moons circle the planets. Then make some factions like Earthpeople, the Martians, the Jovians, etc... Could it be done?

EDIT: Or "split" the solar system into several "sub-systems" linked by warp points... don't know if you can make systems with habitable planets in the middle though...

Well Ekolis was working on something similar for the 21st century mod: He made planets the size of suns! Each planet could be colonized multiple times....That would be the single system mod for ya! Unfortunatly, Ekolis is being mean and wont finish it...Laughing out loud

As regards the clipping-(more than 1 object in a hex) it's semi-annoying but easy enough to live with. I've modded my planets with moons to be in the same hex.

I would just go with the major moons as there are approx 139 moons at the present time

Earth 1
Mars 2
Jupiter 62
Saturn 33
Uranus 27
Neptune 13
Pluto 1 (yes Pluto is still a planet) Smiling

Ganymede (Jupiter) and Titan (Saturn) are the 2 largest moons, both of which are larger than Mercury.

Deimos (Mars)is the smallest named moon

Pluto and Charon are the closest in size followed by the Earth and our own Moon in that respect.

You can't make the system map big enough to make it have a good sense of scale (showing, say, 10 moons orbiting around Jupiter sensibly, without having to be next to all the other planets). Once you get to about 3x the radius, the game engine grinds to a halt.

Re: Our System

You could probably make one single planet, (Such as Jupiter, but make it Really big!!!) and have all the moons around it portrated as smaller planets. You could make one "Big Planet" Be the center of Each system, and then link all the systems, so that you "Hop" from planet to planet. Each system would be a "Area of influence", Involving important parts of the Sol system. You could maybee evan add an asteroid belt, and add little moons in the belt to be "asteroid bases. Then you could have something like "Sol Wars". It's an intersting idea, especially if it's made into a scenario. Any takers Laughing out loud?
