Framerate Problems

Submitted by MRing on Fri, 2007-04-27 03:32. Bug Reports

System:
Vista x64
E6600
8800GTS 640mb

When the in-game main menu loads, frame rate is a nice peachy 60fps. Click on 'Load', load screen comes up, still 60. Click on a saved game file, and it drops to 20. Load this saved game, and the in-game rate is around 14 to 15, which is on the verge of playability even for a strategy game. There's something that starts to get loaded, like the race flag portraits, that starts to drag down the framerate in the load screen, and it's down hill from there. Going back to the main menu restores 60fps; it first drops when I click on a saved file, like I said, and the empire flags come up.

I've cycled through all the video options, even gave good ol' software emulation a go (alas, even with an OC to 3.2ghz a cpu can only push 1fps).

I'm using the latest brand-new nvidia (158.18) drivers, Vista is all patched up. This occured in the previous version of SE5 too. I tend to finger Vista or the drivers as the variable SE5 has trouble with.

Oh, and on the older nvidia drivers, I had that seizure-inducing white flashing that others have reported, but that's disappeared with these drivers.

I've also noticed that even when I'm not doing anything in-game, CPU usage is almost constantly 100%. I don't know if that's normal or not, but seems odd. Also, some star systems seem to be less of a drag than others; it seems the more empire flags and item pictures being displayed, the harder the frame-rate gets hit.

I hadn't tried window mode, but just did, and thats when I noted the high CPU usage. 100% of 3.2ghz on a Core 2 Duo is a lot just to see warp-points spin.

Hopefully Aaron sees this and has an idea what might be wrong, but anyone else have any suggestions in the mean time? 5-10fps while designing ships is painful.. and dropping from 1600x1200x32 to 1280x1024x16 only nets an extra 5fps.

I have a framerate problem when looking at the ship layout in the damage tab in the ship report: component icons are most of the time messed up, and the framerate drops to 4-5 fps.

This is even more annoying because the damage tab is the one that is opened by default, and I often miss the other tabs when I try to click on them because of the low framerate.

I have a low-end system (Duron 1.3 Ghz, 512MB SDRAM, GeForce4 Ti 4200), but I find such a drop in framerate rather weird...

What the...

I am playing on a really old rig ---> 1100MHz, 256DDR RAM, ATI Radeon 9200, Windows XP, 256-768MB of virtual memory

My fps is just fine, it is usually around 60-65fps.

have you tried vidio memory usage in safe mode?

also if you're using a duel core processer, try switching the duel core line in the settings.txt to true (it's like... the third or fifth line down or something)
