Troops are Useless |
It came up in a recent game of mine. SEV v1.33 w/ BM 1.03a
Basicly it was discoverd that if you load fighters into a cargo bay you can drop them off on a planet like troops and you can capture the planet.
I had weapons platforms, but they appearred to do nothing, which I assume is a seperate bug.
The question is this: Why if fighters can do space AND ground combat would you EVER build troops?

Hmm, interesting observation...
If you couldn't change whether fighters can capture a planet (admittedly, the ideal solution) what else would you suggest to make troops an attractive unit?
Seriously, I am curious what you think would be appropriate.
Myself, I was considering giving troops a cost reduction to upkeep (like stations) to reflect that fighters tend to be high cost, high upkeep (upkeep is tied mostly to object cost), and so low quantity, units.

i´m not sure on this but if i remember right fighters can´t capture a planet.
they can fight units but to conquer the planet i think you need troops.
also, fighters don´t count to keep the enemy population calm so without troops on an occupied planet you will very fast have revolts.

Troops are the path to happiness indeed. As for the weapons platforms, were they armed with point-defence?

So, the conclusion is that fighers are better because they fight in space and on planets?
But only troops can control an alien population, right? So, we need troops AFTER taking over the planet?
I'm so new to SEV that I haven't developed fighters yet. After reading these posts, I think I'm going to change my research from troops to fighters....

in balance mod troops are only half the size of fighters. PD on weapon platforms should take out fighters while on the ground, but not troops.
troops also give a happeness bonus. I tend to mix with my troop ships, a handfull of fighters, and a bunch of troops.

And fighters don't have problems navigating the maze of buildings and hills either. Pacifying population is about the only benefit troops have.
Of course one must watch the weapon mix. I think some troop weapons can't hit fighters, and I know some fighter weapons are useless against troops.
I can't make an argument against fighters in ground combat based on realism, but there are some balance issues I really hate.

Why not let troops to occupy a planet? just like you already have spaceships, why do you need weaponplatform or other fighters?
I've met this once, when I attacked a planet, AI haven't enough troops so it dropped all fighters onto the surface of the planet, that caused me a big damage but I think my troops were cheaper then fighters.
