Official Map Compiler

Submitted by Fyron on Tue, 2007-04-17 16:44. SE:V MODs

Patch 1.33 of Space Empires 5 mentioned the inclusion of a new map compiler, designed to create .map files from a text file representation. Unfortunately, this program was not included in the public patch.

When we inquired about this, Malfador told us that it will definitely be included in the next patch. In the mean time, we have been granted permission to post the compiler for all to use. You can download the file from the following location:

Tried it out, gave me an error message. I tried it on a different computer than the one that has SEV. I'll try it again on my computer that has SEV later.

SEV, more than a feeling.

Did you install it properly in the Utilities folder?

Problably needs the game installed, or at least the txt files in the correct paths.

Yes, it works fine when it's in the utilities folder. Thanks guys. Now on to more important things programing something to handle those data files.

What programming language do you guys use to manipulate these data files. Is it hard to learn these programing languages?

SEV, more than a feeling.

The map compiler is placed in the SE:V utilities directory. The sample .txt file indicates the format of the .txt files that can be compiled by the map compiler... it's not really intended for someone to build a whole map through entering manual text data, but rather that an interested person would create a gui program or script to generate the .txt, which the map compiler could convert to SE:V's .map format.

Unzip the .rar and put the contents into utilities program. There's afew progroms out there that can unzip, I use WinRAR. A quick google search should point you to it.

For those unfamiliar with the .rar file format it's a compression format. winrar, works. I like 7zip, because it's freeware and you can recompress files in different formats. You can find it at www.7-zip.org

Its not a rar file, it is a zip file... native support in XP and all.

Re: Official Map Compiler

Hey,
I'm playing the 1.35 steam version, and the map compiler, which is included, doesn't seem to work right. When i compile a map txt file and then try it in game, the objects included in the txt file are not included. At least not visually... if i select a hex in the map where an object was placed in the txt file, (eg, hex (2,2) from the map1.txt example file) then the object appears in the details window, under the main screen. The sun picture appears out of boundries, beyond (-9,-9) if i remember correctly, and it seems to me the pictures of the objects included in the txt file are there too, together with the sun (not really sure, since they seem to be 'in' the sun).
Anyone having the same problem? Am i doing something wrong?
Thanks a lot
Nico

I have the same problem with the map compiler. I've tried to reinstall SE and compile the original example Map1.txt with the stock data files, but it's still looks the same. Other maps created by the Map Creator give same effect.

Re: Official Map Compiler

I had a very similar problem with custom created maps. In the game, clicking on the location of a planet or star showed it's stats in the details window - but in the systems view all the planets were invisible. Even the original Map1.txt wouldnt work.

I found out that i have to switch my computers regional settings to "English - US" before using the map compiler. With regional settings US the maps compile just fine and the problems are gone.

Hope this helps.
