Is There Demand for a Mod to upgrade to Stock AI

Submitted by unnamed on Mon, 2007-04-16 21:27. SE:V MODs

I'm thinking of creating a mod to update the stock AI. It would use the Stock tech tree, and would only improve the AI. To begin with it would mostly incorporate the improvements already made in other Mods (assuming noone minds me using parts of their code) and move forward from there. Is anyone interested in this? Is there any demand out there for this mod? Let me know and if there is enough demand I'll start working.

Aaron is likely to return to the AI again, but I don't see any problems with putting something together otherwise.

Can't have too many people working on the AI.

SEIV had a great AI mod for the stock game: the TDM mod. It would be great to have something simmilar for SEV. Part of the fun of TDM was that it included races from several AI creators, with therefore also very different behaviour. The AI-contests between these different AI's were legendary.
I haven't really played stock seV, mainly because of the weak AI, and the stock game balance issues (and lack of time). but I know many people are, especially people that are new to the game.

from my point of view yes the origional AI mod was to add three beter AI's to the stock game and prompted many developments with the IRM and Balence Mod AI's

Of course, I'd love to see better AI. I always would, in any and everything. What Henk mentions about TDM sounds absolutely brilliant. If I were any kind of coder, I would have to get in on that.

I've been working on an upgraded AI myself, and have made significant progress in making it more challenging.

Alright, sounds like more than enough interest. I have a version that I believe is better than the current AI, that I am willing to share, but I'll need a place to host the files.
Any suggestions?

The SE V Wiki is somewhere you can upload files as well as put up a page describing progress etc.

To upload the files you might use the Shrapnel forum:

I've done some work in some area's of the stock AI also, without actually modding the data files, shoot me a PM with a quick summary of what you've done and I'll shoot back what I've done, see if we can put together a pure AI mod without tampering with the game.

Much as I personally believe that some elements of the initial game needed considerable balancing also, but thats down to individual consumption.

I wont be actually modding the stock game (no balancing the game), it will be just upgraded AI. (Initially I thought I needed to create a mod so that the computer could use different colony types and design types than stock uses. Tested this morning, and the AI doesnt use colony types or design types from the data folder, they are there for us humans.

Mostly incorporated IRM mod upgrades and a couple Balance upgrades, then a couple of my own.
See the wiki for general info http://wiki.spaceempires.net/index.php/Mods_%28SEV%29

Will release tomorrow morning unless something big comes up.

I would love to have an upgrade to the stock ai. I would attempt to do my own, but I am waiting for aaron to actually release an update to the stock version. This is so I don't have to work on it twice.

I actually think that a majority of the weak ai can be dealt with by adding handicaps to the ai. I think that even with these, the ai will have the inability to make a good ship. So I do plan on eventually working on the script that designs ships, but like I said, I am going to wait for a stock upgrade.

Hey largedarryl,

I've released the first functioning upgrade for the stock the stock AI. Its available at http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/project/Unnamed

I would particularly appreciate comments/suggestions/observations this week since I have it off before I start studying for the BAR. I'm hoping to get some good work done, and I'm already looking at how fleets work and attack, and how the AI defends.

Also, For those using IRM let me know your observations on fleets, attacking, and defending in IRM. I used alot of code from that mod.

Thanks
