Invincible planets?

Submitted by javaslinger on Fri, 2007-04-13 15:30. Space Empires V General

Ok, I've heard about this 'ringed planet' bug but until now I never paid much attention. However, I think it may be in part responsible for the total slaughter of an attack fleet of mine.

This is a multiplayer PBW game with simultaneous combat. Stock 1.33 with BM 1.05.

Ok, I attacked a planet which was ringed. It was defended by fighters, some small sats, and a defense base.

I destroyed all the fighters pretty quickly without too many losses. Now as I approached the planet the weapons platforms began chewing into me. I had 3 types of ships, one entirely point defense weapons, one DUC level 5 I think, and one missile ship level 3 I think.

None of them ever shot at the planet. All were summarily wiped out by the weapon platforms

Did I have the wrong weapons or are ringed planets totally invincible and armed with weapons platforms, are they the ultimate weapon???

Thanks,

Javaslinger

Your information is not entirely accurate.

The planet had about 5 Shield Weapon Platforms which raised a total of some 3600 shieldpoints. These shields were severely pounded, but they did hold.
The weapon platforms themselves (except shield emitters) were equipped with missile launchers, some DUC and some laser cannons.
It should also be noted that these platforms were also equipped with point defense lasers to stop missiles.

Your ships did first go for my satalites and space station though, and by that did not do as much damage to the planet as they could have.

If I would not have had the shield emitters there you would have glassed the planet, I think.
But it could be a bug. I would have expected a fleet of that size to do more damage. Even considering the planet defenses were specificly tailored for mass fleet combat..

There is also armor on the platforms, but that does not seem to show..

Read the bug thread for 1.33
On it you'll find one of the biggest bug is that you can't hit planets with DUC's. Anti proton beams work alright though

Can someone clarify just what is impacted by this bug? I've seen people say that 'bolt' weapons don't work against ring planets. What exactly are 'bolt' weapons? I've also seen some say that others don't work also.

Also, it this specifically limited to ring planets? Or are others affected? It's confusing with some of the reports seeming to be contradictory.

Thanks,

Your ships must be close enough in order to be able to attack the center of the planet. Thus in 1.33 fighter and planetary bombardment weapons don't work against planets. (except maybe sometimes against tiny planets)

Sooo, what does work???? What falls into the category of planetary bombardment weapons? DUC's? Missile Weapons? Planetary Napalm?

If a planet is shielded, can that be hit? But not the planet beneath it? I just need some clarification.....

Thanks,

Planetary Bombardment = Napal Bombs, etc...
It all comes to range - If you can't target the planet center, then you can't attack it, and you can't hit it. Shields don't change anything.

So bombardment ships with bomb weapons set to strategy close range would do the trick?

I noticed in my earlier combats that missiles did little damage too. But that is a designdescision in the balance mod...

Nope, not enough range. Maybe Point Blank Strategy against tiny planets would work, but I doubt it.

Looks like it has nothing to do with range and attacking the planet center after all...
Some weapons like Planetary Napalm and DUC (and their smaller equivalents) just don't work against planets. Other weapons like Anti-Proton beams and Missiles work fine.

Also, I didn't know that Planetary Napalm range gets upgraded with level...
