Introductionairy;
Currently I'm playing my first PBEM game versus an 'unknown opponent'. I'm playing versus Javaslinger in a King of the Hill match. I played against a friend before, but he is a new player and is currently outmatched. Ofcourse I hope he'll catch up soon Sticking out tongue
Now I'm up against someone who fully knows what he's doing... And it is... exciting... We started with default settings. (1 world, no starting techs, balancemod 1.05). I have to keep some of my tech choices vague as the game is still ungoing Sticking out tongue.

Actual
It was the dawn of the great war. It was the year 2400. It was in this year that we made our first major advances in sensor technology. An important step for us, as we could find out more about the universe around us. Our first space explorations took place over 20 years ago and failed misserably because of a spacemonster which we didn't see comming. We could hold our world only by sacrificing millions of our people in it's defense. We swore that this would happen no more.

As soon as we perfected our sensor technology we launched our first colony ships into space. The One Blue Moon, as we call it, which had been hanging above our world as a giant, guarding our skies was first to be taken. It was decided by our engineers that The One Blue Moon and The One World would be the industrial centres from which we would expand. And so it was.
Colony ship after colony ship was built on our worlds. It's industrial complexes were expanded and improved upon rapidly to allow for more ships to be built. Other colonies throughout surrounding solar systems quickly came to fruitation and started contributing to what now was called.. 'The Empire'.

Happily and agressively we expanded through space. Claiming gas world after gas world as our own. But then it happened... When we were exploring the Melkar system, in the western part of our empire we encountered strange creatures on a earth like world. Strange that one would go for rock, in stead of the freedom provided by gaseous worlds. These creatures seemed bound to the ground of their world and did not freely roam their skies.

At home... panic struck. We weren't ready for another space monster... We had not invested any research in any weapon technologies. The galaxy was only ours after all. We quickly upgraded our missile technology, which had served us so well versus the first space monster we encountered. We quickly applied this technology to our very first frigats and send them on course to protect the Melkar system. As we feared the aliens, and had no idea what to expect, our designers had called our ships 'Cannon Fodder'. Capital Missile Frigates.

By now, there were 2 alien worlds in the Melkar system. We blindly claimed a nearby world for ourselves and quickly fortified it with weapon platforms. We launched a Eagle satalite, as is standard procedure within the empire, as soon as we could, to keep an eye on the surroundings of our world in the Melkar system.
We sent a diplomatic communication in which we explained that the Melkar system belonged to our empire and that we kindly asked the rock worlds to be handed over. We would ensure good care. We offered to reserve an entire solar system for their race so they could thrive. We even expressed our facination in their monkey-like species.
They responded after a while. It seems the aliens are dealing with antiquated communication systems and it would take some time for the worlds to be evacuated. This seemed plausible enough... so we waited.
We told the aliens we rejoiced in their reply.

It was then, when we first noticed massive numbers of celebration beacons surrounding their worlds in Melkar. We were happy that our influence was of such positive nature to our neighbours.

After a while we spotted strange alien ships which were deploying celebration beacons throughout the melkar system. Our first frigates arrived as well to assist with the emigration of the monkey-species from the system.
Purely by accident (truely) one of our frigates came on an interecept course with one of the alien vessles. Our ship noticed a toxic atmosphere on the alien vessle and rushed to it's aid. The alien's ship malfunctioned as their engines suddenly went into full burst. But our frigate catched up. We sent a messagepod, attached to one of our missiles, to the alien ship. It seemed our technology was incompatible with the alien vessle. And it exploded. It turned out there were millions of monkeys aboard the ship in pods. We gathered them from space, freed them of the toxic atmosphere and took them out of their pods. Strangely they did not last long.
We returned the remaining organics to the alien empire and explained we did all we could, but were unable to save them.
No word of thanks was ever received.

Then.. things got more disturbing. Our frigate went into pursuit of an alien beacon-vessle. We detected the same toxic atmoshpere aboard and rushed to it's aid. Our ship flew as quickly as it could and was welcomed with a shower of beacons in the wake of the alien vessle. The beacons exploded. Our ship was never heard of again.
2 more frigates entered the melkar system and were also greeted by a shower of those beacons. The aliens sent quick word stating that they sent frienly beacons, but that they seem to be incompatible with our technology.
We know now... they are mines.

Xenophobic behaviour spread in our empire. We try to keep appearanced up but are worried. What IS happening behind those minefields? We have spotted a total of some 200 mines so far throughout the Melkar system.

We expanded our militairy complex and launched fighter wings at every border location of the empire. We expanded so much that our economy threatened to crash to a grinding halt. Thankfully we have made some improvements in resourcemanagement. We turned the tide at the brink of destruction. (Down to 980 minerals in stock...).
Our economy now thrives. We have recently discovered a technology to do away with those alien minefields. We have ordered a number of vessles and expect them any time soon. We hope they will work, as the empire has never encountered this kind of threat before.
Our engineers are playing with the idea of presenting our neighbours with similar 'beacons of joy' to see how much they like 'm...

The last 4 months things have flamed up. We have discovered some worlds on multiple locations where the monkeys seem to thrive. We have attempted to drive them back; But they are still comming. Their mining ships are everywhere.
Also... We suspect they have knowledge of our fighterwings, as they seem to be spreading with ships designated 'swatter'. It is troubling to see them designate our costly fighter wings as mear flies. It is troubling to see how effective these swatters are against our wings. Our makeshift-carriers, built upon transport ship technology with only a few fighterbays, seem to have much trouble with them.

Things get worse...
2 months ago we spotted ships designated 'Eradicator' at the far end of our sensor range. We expressed our concern about this new design and hoped these ships were friendly.
The aliens responded that they had an ant problem and these ships were merely transporting their eradicators to deal with the problem.

We were troubled still.
We had a second world claimed now, in the Melkar system. A Bountiful world, which we surely would have claimed earlier if we knew about it. The melkar system is filled with our Weapon Platforms. We introduced new defense satelites. Scattershots. The alien swatter vessles seemed to have serious effects on our missile defense systems. We hoped these scattershots would deter the aliens from any hostile actions.

Last month... terrible, and yet glorious events occured. A large group of Swatter and Eradicator vessles appeared in orbit around our first Melkar world. We estimate their number at about 13. Panic broke out. How did they gather this many vessles in the Melkar system without us knowing? What were these ships?
They approached our world. But our people trained for this day. Our orbital defense satelites and our weapon platforms responded to the incomming alien fleet. As was our initial worry, the swatters were extremely effective against our missile defenses. They were not prepared however for a shower of gun fire from the planet. When the alien fleet came very close to our world, all our weapons responded in full. The aliens returned fire with guns far stronger than our own. (LV4 instead of LV1). We were victorious nevertheless. Our shear number of defenses overwhelmed the aliens. Once the Swatter ships were gone, our missile defenses at free-play, which were used to it's full extent. We were victorious.6 satelites lost. But all the alien vessles destroyed.

It is troubling though. Scans of the alien vessles revealed that their sensor tech had made great leaps in the last few months. (LV3 instead of LV1). Not as advanced as our own (LV4), but still, our strategic advantage in this area is slipping away.
Also, the alien weaponry seemed more advanced. Far more advanced.
And their armor... Massive plating (LV4 against our Lv2).

At home... deep inside our militairy complex interesting developments are taking place. We are confident that our aging fleet can keep the alien fleet at bay for now. We have some surprises up our sleave. Our scientists expect to reveal the first prototypes within 6 months.

It is troubling though. The big '15' painted on the side of the swatter.. and the big '9', I think, painted on the eradicator, is cause for concern. Perhaps the alien fleet is larger then we estimate. We estimate we outnumber the aliens though. We estimate we do this by far.... but do we? We also estimate our empire to be more vast. But right now.. we simply cannot tell. Our intelligence operations reveal little. But we remain hopeful.

We are troubled though. We fear the aliens may be hostile...

Very nice.... Interesting read... We have bigger, faster, stronger fly swatters on the way. 15? 9? You must have seen our border screens. Not our FLEETS...

Part II - New Year
Behind the scenes in Militairy HQ a message is received from the Aliens. It states that we have one last chance to make peace. That we have slaughtered millions of innocents. That their fleets are being mobilized..
Well.. it is true we cleared out some worlds but... In any case..

New years eve. 2404. We are all out on the streets; celebrating yet another year in our existence. We are in a good mood. Ofcourse, there are rumours of soldiers disappearing. Some seem to have had traumatic experiences with the Aliens. But there always were some soldiers in the army with a few screws loose.
All of a sudden the large vision-screens in all of our cities on all of our worlds flash up brightly. The imperial logo is shown and trumpets shout. A sad music sets in as his imperial highness enters the viewer-screens.
'My fellow Myrtopians.. It is a sad day for all of us. You all know of the alien civilization at the western ends of our empire. You all know about the minefields. You all know of our efforts to make peace and spread our values throughout the galaxy. (Images roll by from our frigates picking up stranded monkeys from space in their poisunous pods). But today; sad news has reached us. Mindless agression towards our worlds and ships has commenced. Billions of injured citizens. (A world in flames is shown on the screens. Smoke everywhere. So many flames you would almost suspect that this world had soil... and was not gasious. But then... the air looks gasious, although the color is a bit odd..). Today - we received word from the aliens. Let these words speak for them selves... *kgg*our antiquated communications system*kgg* last chance for you to make peace*kgg*with*kgg*you. We have mobilized our fleet! *kgg*We*kgg*have killed millions of innocents!.*kgg*We have an ant problem.*kgg*Our Eradicators have*kgg*killed millions*kgg*.'
Then... the screen changes. Images are shown like never shown before. We heard there was an incident in Melkar but... Fleets of alien vessles approach the idillic world world of Melkar. We see a child, holding it's toy.. crying... The alien ships are shown again. There must be 30 of them in all. The assault our world. Rain gunfire from the skies. Our heroes are shown; Men and women running towards the defense installations. Missiles are launched; The skies turn red with our gunfire. Explosions cover the skie. Magnificent images are shown from the alien ships begin blown to pieces. The image of the child returns.. Charred.
Silence in the central squares...
The emperor returns to the screen.
'Be not afraid my children. The alien agressors shall be stopped. Just now I responded to the aliens and declared that we feared them not. That we are brave and shall fight against their mindless agressions. That we will stand for what is just and for our survival. My people. We are
at war!'

Lastly; the screen zooms out. The emperor stands in front of a large ship and points to it. He laughs. 'It's funny really. The enemy named this vessle. By referring to us as ants. We named this ship... The Anthill. It is a prototype. It is a destroyer; Remarkable. It will be our victory!'. The emperor turns to the camera.. 'Our most brilliant minds are working around the clock to get it finished. They just need one more month to complete the definitive design. Make no mistake. The enemy Eradicators are formiddable opponents. But next month. When all is done. They will be strongly outmatched!'. He smiles. We feel secure.
Next month; everyone reports to the baracks! Everyone reports to the shipyards! We are going to get this job done. We will fight for our survival against the monkey threat. And we will be victorious!
Some images are shown on the screens where the prototype flies and blows up an old cannon fodder class frigate. Remarkable... Remarkable indeed.

Cheers sound throughout the night. Everyone parties. Because next month.... We start 'The Big Job'.

To be continued.

We too have a prototype... I recall when I was younger the best way to rid yourself of pesky anthills was a good hose down.... So we too have a protype, 'Firehose'. We will wash the skies of your people. You still have one chance for peace. Time is precious. Save the lives of your people.

Riots
The garden is quiet. It is secluded and far away from the industrial hearth of the empire. Sure, there are some meeting rooms here for when the ministers visit.. but that's it. The ministers aren't here right now. Just the emperor and his favorite servant. The emperor holds a messagepad in his hands. He looks troubled.
Perhaps I made a mistake, he sighs. I'm afraid many lives will be lost and this war may cost us more than it will yield.
The emperor looks at the pad again. 11 Eradicators Mark 2's, 2 Eradicators Mark 1 and about 5 Swatters. And only the gods know what those 'Boomers' are. A fleet of some 22 ships. I fear for the people of Melkar. They have been equipped with formiddable defenses but.. 22 ships. I don't know.
And here... he reads on.. Riots. The people of Melkar must know about the enemy fleet nearby. I'd be afraid too. The aliens have not been known to use ground forces. They have only been spreading death from above. And those Boomers? Could they be designed to counter our defenses? I suspect they are bombardment ships.
The servant says nothing. He just looks at an olive plant.
If only the Twilex Armada could break through those mines. You know they upped the number from 70 to 120 last month? I'm actually considering sending old prison ships through the wormhole and smash through those mines.
The servant still stares at the olive plant...
You are right; the emperor says. Perhaps we should swallow our pride for now. Afterall, the aliens have never eradicated one of our worlds. They tried.. yes.. but, they never did.
The emperor snaps a twig from the olive plant. He holds the olive-branche in his hands. I will send a message. For the people of Melkar. Let us hope... it is not too late.
The servant says nothing, but looks hopefull to the sky. Perhaps... there is hope for the people of Melkar. But right now... we just don't know how the aliens think. We just don't know how well our defenses will hold against such an armada... If only we could..
The emperor sighs and looks through the intelligence reports. He smiles and pushes some buttons on his pad. This too could make things interesting...

I too am reading along. Very good so far. I'd be interested to hear a comparing account from javaslinger. I also think its kinda interesting cause it seems like you have a floating, flying species yet sometimes they are in gardens and things. I'd like to see if you could take it to the next level by demonstrating some completely unique cultural events (ex. Aerial festivals in celebration). But this is by far the best written fan fiction (is that what its called?) i've ever read.

A post will be up soon. A lot of explosive events happened the last few turns, and I still need to convert them into a story. Heh. It's kinda nice to write this too. I find the match we're playing exciting and really don't know what's comming Sticking out tongue

I did notice the inconsitency myself with the floating and the gardens... But I'm working on correcting that Sticking out tongue.
Many thanks for the compliments though! I'm glad you guys are reading it.

Myrath,

I've been enjoying your writing so much, I look for it every time I visit this site (just about daily). Also it has convinced me to start playing multiplayer games, so beware of The Unnamed in the future.

Invasion!
The riots continue. Our people are upset by the alien fleet in the Melkar system. Who could blame them? Nearly 40 warships in orbit, and no fleet from home to back you up. We did our best to re-asure the people. We even sent a diplomatic envoy to the aliens. We suggested a peace treaty and even spiced it up and offered to help the monkeys with medical aid.'
The offer was bluntly refused. Something about mistrust about our continuous intelligence operations. Well, it is true that we have invested in this area, and it is also true that the emperor himself approved certain operations, but... they have not been so succesful. We receive a steady shipment of minerals from the aliens... but plans detailing their advanced Duranium Cannons never seem to arrive.
We tried to subvert some crews... maybe haul a ship or 2 in for deconstruction, but that operation failed aswell..

Anyways; Our intel is out of our control now. The emperor decided the intel department could best be run by a minister who specializes in it. See if he can do a better job. We hardly hear anything of our intel department now. They went underground.

After what seemed to be a communications blackout we received another communication. It was a response to our well intended peace offer. The aliens wanted us to stop with just about everything. We were to hand over our research, stop researching, intel and we cou;dn't even create a black hole!. Everyone knows the celestial temples, known as black holes, are a blessing to the universe. The presence of The One True God is shown in them. We intend to bring the One True God to the Monkeys. So that treaty was off the table. Even more so, it upset his Imperial Highness. He decided that the peace accords be changed into a subjagation treaty. A minor contrabution would be required from the aliens in order to let them live. But they refused.

Things remained quiete. Even so quiete that our militairy commands must have been alseep when the aliens sent 2 ships in 2404.7. The first ship was sent on an obvious suicide mission towars our Melkar ring world. To test our defenses.
The people on the planet didn't even bother to sound the alarm or stop their riots. The one alien ship was quickly disposed off. Admiral Mortak was worried though. The aliens must have been able to scan us and know our capacity. Worse yet. The secret must have been out. Our new weapons were open for display.

Green lasers, known as anti proton beams combined with shields must have showed up on the aliens scans. We were worried. It wouldn't be long....

Now, this scout was obviously noticed. What was missed was the lone Exterminator entering our far nothern border. It was disposed off quickly by the the captain controlling a 6 ship Antiquated Cannon Fodder fleet. I still remember the captain smiling. His wings glowed bright purple, as happens when humour is involved. Many jokes were made.

2404.8. The morning of the very first days.
The riots stopped. Someone bothered to sound the alarm. This didn't have much effect. Turning on the city screens showing the incomming fleet did. 40 warships on a direct path to our Melkar world. Our fighter wings launched. Around 20 trained souls. Most were antiquated fighters, but some had the new equipment aboard. They faught valliantly. But fell quick to the alien Swatters and Extermina
tors.
Down at the planet huge roars sound from gigantic machines powering up. Sirens are everywhere. All of a sudden the entire sky lits up as huge mushroom clouds bounce against the massive shield generators positioned around the planet.
Powerful beams shoot up, combined with duranium cannons and missile barrages. Alien missiles are stopped by our point defenses. Nevertheless, the shield takes a huge pounding.

We shoot back though... oh we shoot back. Most of our missile satalites are dispersed off quickly. But some remain. Even the space station in orbit manages to take down a few alien vessles with it's laser batteries.
The battle continues.

Against all odds, we seem victorious. The shields held. Barely!. Our intel department reports the alien fleets chatting amongst each other about navigational problems (ringsworld bug issue). But we celibrate. Melkar is safe! A month later the riots on both worlds in the Melkar system would end. The huge morale burst of such a victory is awesome. Their trust in the emperor has been restored.

But not everything was great on this morning. On the northern frontier our 6 frigates stould guard. The wormhole opened. Our ships moved into position to launch their antiquated weapons. They did. They prepared to fire on the lead ship. Activated their sensor display to see it explode... but were shocked. Wings turning deadly white. Fear. 32 alien vessles came through the portal and left none alive. We have not before led such lossed and were shocked. Our intel made a huge mistake. The aliens were not just preparing with 1 fleet. They had 2!. The gods may know... they even may have 3. They are far more powerful then anticipated.
Most ships were latest generation vessles. The aliens seem to have short supply routes. We could be in for big trouble here. Panic broke out in the northern sysyems. They had not prepared for such an invasion fleet. The orbital defenses, although formiddable, are of no comparisson to the Melkar defense arrays.

The aliens began persuit of one of our precious carriers and destroyed many brave fighter pilots. The carrier has eluded them, sofar. But we fear for the carriers life.

Back home, from many of our worlds, you can see bright red strokes running through the galaxy. A huge number of destroyers if flying with massive afterburners. The engines nearly explode from the pressure put upon them. But we must hurry. All 3 fronts must be countered with sufficient force to counter the aliens.
Our Northern front, where we see 32 alien ships. Our Western front, Melkar, where 5 new alien ships have already arrived, and our southern front, where we are already noticing an increase in alien militairy operations.

For now, our industry is running at it's maximum capacity. Spending over 30.000 tons more of raw minerals than we can afford. Supplies are almost out. But the fleet.... the fleet is ready.
And the strategy... changed. To beat the enemy we need not only counter the enemies designs. We should use their own tricks against them! That will secure us! That will make us strong.

We wonder... what will the future bring. What damage will the monkeys do? How many billions will be lost in this war? Can we survive? Can we be victorious? We hope so. But.... we do not know.

To be continued!

You have a true talent for this... I have to admit that as much fun as it is playing this game against you, it is magnified immensely by reading your accounts of it. I only wish I had the time and talent to provide the counter perspective.

Our peaceful people forced into this bloody war to protect ourselves from your obvious aggressions.

What Myrath leaves out are the most heinous act of his people. His 'intelligence' services have been abducting our young. Experimenting on them is the most horrific ways. And returning their mutilated corpses to us for 'burial'. They claim it is in an effort to improved their understanding of our physiology so that they can offer us medical aid. The lies... If you could see the results of their studies.... If only you could see the corpses of our young... barely recognizable...

The Blue Eye
Captain cvok stould at the helm of his ship and stared into the eye of the grand wormhole before him. The wormhole at opened itself to it's full size, as happens when you approach it with your ships. Are we being fools Twan? Twan was a junior officer, fresh out of the academy. He had shown extrodinairy talent and was offered officer positions on some of the newest Anthills. He chose this mission though. It was risky. Never done before. But if it worked, they'd all be heroes.
No captain; We are doing the right thing. His wings took an eager glow. Through the green methane gasses, which form the atmosphere on our ships, the glow seemed magical. Awe inspring.
Very well, Cvok said, putting a hand on Twan's shoulder. We go.
Cvok was a veteran. He had flown old Cannon Fodders and was one of the few to fight a battle against the alien ships and make it home. Forward! He shouted into the com system.
The nine unconventional ships fired up their engines. Only one Cannon Fodder II was sent as an escort. Fleet command stated they didn't want to risk more. It was a big enough gamble as it was. Noncense, Twan thought. Our technological leaps have proven flawless. This should work just fine. He looked around the bridge. Lots of people had white wings. He didn't. Neither did the Captain. We'll do fine.

The ships went forward and suddenly were grabbed by the traction of the wormhole. They 10 ships accelerated. A tremble went through the ships, as happens when gliding through the warp points.
The ships exitted the wormhole. The prepared systems fired up right away. Outside huge machines started sucking in the deadly mines surrounding them. 207 mines. You could see many of them by just looking out the windows. But one by one they disappeared. The 9 mine sweepers worked at near maximum capacity. Their performance meters well in the red. But it was done.

A signal came through the wormhole. 'Report!'
All clear admiral!, Cvok responded. The mines which were blocking us for 3.5 years have been obliterated without as much as a scratch on our hulls!
Very well! Lets go get 'm!

If one would be able to hear sound in space, one would have heard it miles away. Engines fireing up. First, second and up to 6th generation Cannon Fodders, Prototype, FirstBatch, Mark 1&2 Anthills. All ready. All going forward. All setting course.

The people of Melkar will be happy to see us. Well... Those living on gaseous worlds that is..

Mmm, once a couple more patches come along and things in RL stabilise again, I may step onto the multiplayer stage myself. Or maybe I should just dive in now and figure where things go.

Btw, you guys are playing a 1v1 with no AI involved?

Explosions
Left and right destroyers and frigates blew up. Engines on fire. Missile launchers and beam cannons destroyed. Wreckages were spread out all over the sector. It didn't matter much. Those on the ancient Cannon Fodders II were sure not to survive a hit. But even the most modern Anthills took severe beating.
I thought these mines were gone shouted the admineral. What the hell happened here?!
Only 4 cannon fodders and one anthill raced ahead of the other ships. Their captains would surely be promoted because of their superior flying skills.
The assault was over quickly. The alien Melkar world was glassed with ferocious efficiency. A vengeance well overdue. But the damamge!

Captain Cvok appeared on the com's screen of the main destroyer. Admiral. What are you doing? You were supposed to WAIT until we cleared out these mines! Homeworld sent world that you are releived of command. Ensigns; grab him. Throw him in the brig!
And so it happend; The admineral was dragged away.

Cvok looked at Twan. Come. We have a job to do. Emperial command flagged me fleet admiral. That Anthill needs a new captain. You're it!. Twan smiled. Ayeaye sir!
We're still going to be stuck here for months though admiral. Nearly the whole fleet is damaged. We even lost 10 ships due to those blasted mines!
I know Twan. *sigh*. I guess the monkeys will have to be patient. We'll come for them soon enough though.

In an other part of the galaxy another batallion of cannon fodders ran into a big surprise;
Alarmbells ringing through out all ships. What the hell capt'n! They're using our own tricks against us! And look at those missiles! They're ripping us to shr*kggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg*.

The aliens adapted. They too now use weapon platforms to defend their worlds. Capital Missile platforms nevertheless!. The aliens had not been known to use them before. So most of our ships only had minimal point defense guns. Something that has to be quickly overcome.

Thankfully these last few months have not only been bad news filled with terrible losses. On the nortern frontier a squadron of Monkey-Exterminator II vessles approached one of our frontier worlds. The aliens most have scanned the world and thought they'd be able to take on the low number of planetary defenses installed. They were so wrong. We used new forms of warfare. Planetairy shielding generators, as advanced as we can make 'm, and advanced beam weaponry, mounted upon larger arrays to increase range and damage.
At The One World, home, images were shown of the victory. Sounds of the aliens chatter inside their ships was also transimtted to our people. A strange language. Crude. Although there were clear emotions noticble in the sounds. Interesting.

Both our empires took a pounding today. Mainly due to mines and planetairy defenses. Extra thought will have to be put into our strategies. Our naval doctrines will need to be adapted. Ofcourse we will be faster, more efficient. But the monkeys are never far behind. In fact... We learned only yesterday that they were experimenting with beam weapon technology. Luckily our intelligence operatives were able to set back their research for months. But still. They are comming. They keep comming. We cannot afford to throw our fleets at minefields anymore. We are have over-extended our arm. Fighting a long range war. New... more modern alien ships have been spotted. We don't know their purpose. But we know they are new. We must be ready. We must remain focussed. We have an oppurtunity now. We need to grab it with both hands! The galaxy must be ours alone!

[Excerpt of Intelligence intercept of the 'monkey' race]

Lieutenant Braxis: Sir, our maintenance costs for our vast fleet have at last outpaced the immense industrial mining capacity we possess. We have a crisis.

General Chow Mein: So? (quizzically)

Braxis: Sir, our production will grind to a halt! We need to build the latest designs!

Chow Mein: (quizically) I don't understand the problem...

Braxis: We are running out of minerals!!!

Chow Mein: (smiling) Then send the fleet to attack!

Braxis: Sir! Half the fleet will be smashed on their defenses! We may lose tens of thousands of men!

Chow Mein: (quizically) And what will be our mineral status after the slaughter of our outmoded designs....

Braxis: Ah... brutal... but efficient... We will have minerals to spare... (into the intercom) Send the fleet to attack!!

Myrath, Javaslinger - how long on average are you spending each day progressing this game? Would you have time to fit in an IRM PBEM (likely at least 3-way FFA, if not 4-way, in a Destroy Homeworld setting)?

Well, once the game is in a mature stage like this one, I would estimate I spend a minimum of 20 minutes per turn. I am able to due perhaps 3 turns a day, but Myrath schedule sometimes limits him to one a day. We are fortunately able to sometimes crank out several turns when our schedules match. But we live perhaps 9 hours apart, so the overlap is never long...

I am also involved in 2 other games, both in their infancy. Once they get going that will take another large block of time. However, I may drop out of one game if it doesn't speed up....

But Myrath is a blast to play against....

I'm currently only playing 1 game. I am limited by my full time job and my wife Smiling I try to play as often as I can.
(2-3 turns a day). I take between 20 and 40 mins a turn. I take this much time because I'm currently experiencing a resource shortage which makes micromanagement necessairy. (Combined with alien fleets attacking me on all fronts Sticking out tongue)

I'm gonna stick to this 1 game right now. I'm really enjoying my battle versus JS. When it's all done I'm going to look to my next match Sticking out tongue But currently I simply do not have the time.

Fire and secrets
It was morning on Cygni Secundus. Things were progressing quite nicely on this frontier world. A prize world at that. Premium athmospheric conditions and anough room for billions of Myrtopians. Nearly the entire planet had been utilized. Massive research centers erected all over the purple world. But like I said... morning. But not like any other.
Little Caroll was floating outside, trying to shape a gaseous cloud in the shape of a deer. Shaping clouds is often done by our young. It keeps the mind focussed and improves the agility we have with our wings. Little Caroll was talented too. She could form nearly any facet of any living creature in the clouds. Beautiful creatures. A prize to our civilization. When she'd grow up it would surely have been one of our best artisans. But she'll never grow up. Not after what happened...
Sirens sounded. And faster than ever before green beams shot through the atmosphere. Our people were releaved. Our defenses were firing. The shield glowed under stress levels it had not been before. This was troublesome. But.. our shields will hold.. but... What the? That can't be right? Most of those beams aren't comming from the surface; they are comming from above? The aliens don't have beam weapons... right?
Little Caroll looked up to the shield. All of a sudden a bright green beam cut through the skies, cut through the shield, cut through the buildings on the ground, cut through the soil... cut through poor Caroll. There were nearly a billion people on Cygni secundus. A billion. Now... there are none.
In our entire history we only once suffered such losses. This was before we spread through the galaxy to explore. To expand. Only once. We vowed it would never happen again. And yet, these monkeys did. Murder. Masacre. Genocide.
Sure... we killed a few monkeys to clear a few of our worlds. Some would say this could be seen as provocation, but ... no. We were just following the path of our destiny. We were doing what had to be done. We were securing our future. We were driving back the threat that is monkey-kind. But now.. they struck back. A world in flames. It could not have been imagined. But it is true.

Our high council conveined. Representatives of all our worlds were called to homeworld. Summoned before the emperor.
After nearly 10 hours of silence in respect for our dead descisions were made that drastic measures are required.
We have to let go of the old ways. We have to adopt new. We have to embrace what was thought impossible. We must all work so very hard to drive the aliens back. There are so many of them. Their supply of ships seems endless. And now, their weapon systems rival our own.
Centurion and Preatorean class ships have been sent to the front lines. Experiments have already shown that they are by far superior to anything the monkey's have fielded. That includes their latest designs which are already fitted with 3rd generation beam weapons.
We worry. But we are determined. The monkeys will be our greatest challenge yet. Their militairy might is formiddable, their scientific minds nearly rival our own, but, we will prevail.

A new era is about to begin. All bets are off. It is US versus THEM. A fight for final survival.

I don't think any of our races can go back now. To many have died. To many have suffered. I fear for the monkeys. I fear for us. Fleets mass at every front. There's no telling how this will end.

Unfortunatly we experienced a few PBW turn issues and had to roll back a few times because of failed processing and CPU-hijacked turns. But we are back on track now. Otherwise we would have had more turns.

These many years had been stunningly painful for the peaceful Baraku confederation. Never before in their history had they witnessed such brutailty, such vicious acts of trechery, such unimaginable slaughter. Their natural gifts as a race allowed them to quickly adapt and reach the technological strides necessary to keep pace. A hard working people, never unwilling to give of themselves to whatever end, they reached levels of industrial capacity that even shocked themselves. But such strides did not come without a cost....

Cultural joys no longer seemed important. There was no longer time for simple pleasures such as music, sports, and other recreations... some now look back on those arduous times and realize that greater parts of the soul had been crushed as well... Happiness was no longer a concern... Love? who had the time? Physical expressions of intamacy gave way to the necessary growth of the population... More people meant more workers, more scientists, more warriors... Childern? Family? Neighbors? Friends? These societal concepts quickly dissolved into a near forgotten past. Newborns were immediately shipped of to academies for training... Biological enhancements meant that infants quickly became productive members of the war effort... Too quickly as these advancements did not come without some horrific costs.. horrific experiments... horrific accidents...

However, none of this mattered... Only one thing was left... The elimination of the threat... And with that, the survival of the species...

On a day that would have once been celebrated, perhaps even memorialized, a discovery was made. The kind of which, had it been something peaceful, could have transform a society to the extent only seen a precious few times in history. Advancements like fire, the wheel, the combustion engine, computers, fission powerplants, space travel...

But this was not an advancement of peace... Oh no.. This would not bring joy, it would not bring happiness, it would not bring back their souls... It may in fact destroy the very last remnant of their souls... For this was a wartime advancement... An enormous leap forward which led to the most brutal of technologies... And it would rain unspeakable destruction on their enemy... Such devastation that it was never even tested in an occupied system... Some would one day say it was nothing less that an evil madness... Something from the very deepest, darkest depths of the imagination of Hell...

Still, it was the kind that might, just might, bring about a time where a concept like peace, could be spoken of again with hope...

O.K. Are ya happy now??? Smiling

From the Baraku archives in the time before the Turn:

'Sir, are you certain this is wise?'

The general glanced up...

'Sir, we have sent delegations before. They have all been slaughtered.'

"There is no other choice corporal. It must be done."

'But sir! They are treacherous! The will only torture them for our secrets and then murder them so they can display their brutalized corpses to weaken our resolve!'

"Our secrets? Then perhaps they will see why they must make peace..."

'Peace!' The corporal said scornfully, 'They know nothing of peace! They are animals and they seek only the extinction of our race!'

The general met the gaze of this young protege with fierce intensity, "Corporal. Have you seen the reports?"

'The reports sir?'

"Yes corporal! The reports of the weapon! Tell me corporal! What did you see?"

'Sir... I, uh...', the corporal stammered, 'I, I can't speak of it... I can't even think of it...'

"Then you understand... They you KNOW why we must ask them... NO! Beg them! Why we must plead with them to stop their assaults. Why it is essential for both our peoples to stop this war before we are forced to deploy the weapon!"

The general paused, looked down and controlled his anger, and again met the young corporals gaze, this time with a gentle compassion. "Tell me corporal, now, why MUST we send the delegation? Why must we, for both our peoples?"

The corporal collected himself. Steeling himself against the ungodly images running in his mind, bringing him to the brink of madness.

'Because general, if we do not, the enemy will be destroyed. They will cease to exist as a species. They will never again be a part of this universe.'

"And?" prodded the general.

'And... And we will live... for a time... until we are sent to an unholy, eternal, burning hell upon our death for what we have done....'

"Yes corporal. Now you understand why we must do this... Why we will send delegation after delegation to their deaths until there is absolutely no other choice."

The time of the Turn was upon them.

Hmm, I wonder what population HP is like in BM. What kind of weapons are wiping out population here? In IRM, it's practically impossible to wipe out all the people on a well populated colony (though stripping it of facilities and units is another matter) except with specialised Bombardment weapons. I suppose I should also ask how much population is on these contested system colonies.

King of the Hill rules - have you defined 3 systems as your victory objective? How long does one side need to hold all the designated systems before victory is called?

Edit: gee... pity these write-ups inherently can only hold public information. Gonna be almost impossible to do one of these for a 4+ FFA game.

Yeah; We play sole survivor.
The population levels are diverse. Most worlds where we fought over were tiny little worlds. But they are at very strategic chokepoints, which we both want to have Sticking out tongue

I lost one 'Large Green' world though; It was nicely populated.

The damage done to planets is mostly because of capital missiles and poleron weapons. Although in balance mod their damage rating is 0,08x their actual strenght.
But because it involves nearly 50 ships; damage is still severe.

Many of my ships have bombs on them though.

Storm
Fleet Command; The one world. 6th year of the war.
sir sir! quick come! they've gone mad! All of 'm! Mad!. Herclies wings had turned pale from the shock. Nearly all view screens monitoring the front lines were blinking orange. Arrows pointed at engine exausts of the monkey vessles. They're powering up. And they are... they are... they are heading to our main forces!
Which one ensign?- Grand Admiral Enzym asked calmly. Remain calm son.
All of them sir! They are on a direct course to the main Cygny (Northern) and Melkar (Central) fleets!. The aliens are also making curious manouvers in the south.

Admiral Enzym approached. Hmmm.. All of 'm huh? The admirals hand trembled. But the young recruit didn't notice. This is bad. They're testing our metal. Well; We can't do much now. Additional security perimiters are in place. But reinforcements won't make it there for at least 2 more months.
The admiral looked at several screens showing Centurions and Praetorians moving towards the front lines.
Well kid; Look carefully. Fleet tactics at it's best.

Sir!. The Melkar fleet; it's disengaging!. -Yes son. That's right. The admiral smiled. I gave them instructions earlier this morning to block the Melkar-BlackHole warppoint. I ordered them to stop further incursions into our space.
This is good... the admiral mumbled. Real good.
Watch this son. The admiral pointed at the Melkar defense systems. Over 7000 terrawatt worth of shielding. And the latest batteries installed.
The young officer stared at the screen. Combat began. Massive bombardment took place. Weapons of all sorts fired from space upon the glistering shields of Melkar. The improved planetairy defenses, as well as every old model ever built on this world responded in full. This must be the most heavilly defended planet in the galaxy!- the recruit muttered.
Almost son.... almost.
Both the admiral and the recruit watched the screen and saw with great enjoyment the full fledges alien fleet ram itself to pieces against the massive Melkar defense systems. The shields took a good pounding too. Nearly 4000 terawatt of energy was burned out and would need to be recharged. But all with all. Glorious.

But wait. Sir. What's happening there? Quickly the admiral zoomed in to the Cyngy combat zone. We had nearly 30 warships there. Half of these were old cannon fodders. But the other half was made up out of modern Anthill class destroyers, and late model fodders. Not the most powerful configration we could want but...
The aliens however nearly had 50 warships in the area. Modern swatters, exterminators, and firehoses. Also, quite a number of their modern Bruiser beam-destroyers and Boomer-missile destroyers.
The fleets engaged. Explosions. Death. Massacre. The alien advanced warships swept our battlefleet aside asif it were bugs. Quickly then they proceded to Cygni Tetra, another Cygni world we owned in the Cygni system. It's defenses responded. But barely.
That's what you get, you riotting bastards, muttered the admiral. If they just would have done their job and built the defense systems we requested nothing would have happened. But now... Death.
The planet was glassed. The world already had a hostile atmosphere, but now, with all these craters, it would be years before we could ever set foot on this world again.

When we sum all things up a trade was made. Melkar now is ours for the taking. We have a fleet remaining there, and secured the system. All we have to do now is clear out the alien worlds. This is not as easy as one would think, because they've been using our strategies. Heavy planetairy defense platforms have been installed. But that's ok. We wouldn't use a strategy ourselves without knowing it's weakspots. We will show the aliens the weakspots.

Cygny however, in the north, should be considered lost. We only have one world remaining there. Protected with defenses yes, and minefields. But, not supported by fleet.
Besides. We had foreseen this outcome in the north and made proper preparations. All fallback scenario's have been worked out. Dozens of new centurions and preatorians are on the way to all fronts. We are nearly out of 1st generation ships. Our newest are headed to the front. But so, I fear, does the enemy.

We hope the strategy we are currently are following will come to full fruitation soon. We hope our ships will arrive the front lines in time. And we hope they will hold.
Our intelligence operatives have reported disturbing news. While going about their daily jobs which mainly consists out of blowing up alien research labs, our operatives stumbled unto some films. Simulations of beam weapons shooting THROUGH shields. Simply ignoring them; Dreadful news at least! We were able to blow up the lab, but only the gods know how far the aliens progressed in this field.

Sometimes I fear our troubles will never go away. Whenever we think of a genious action to defend our worlds the aliens counter it. Then they throw new trickery at us which we counter. A huge circle of death.

We offered them a piece of the galaxy years ago. Why didn't they accept? Why do so many have to die?
I dwell. My wings spread determined. I fly up. We will win. Victory shall be ours!

Unfortunatly due to some earlier problems with PBW our 2 largest battles yet were not properly recorded in the combat replay file. Else I would have posted screenshots of the event. All is working properly again now though. Just our 2 most bloody battles have been misseed. Things turned exciting with this change of events. I had not expected Java to attack both my battlefleets. I was lucky that my Melkar fleet had just received new orders; Well. You win some, you lose some. It can still go both ways~!

I guess the number of platforms is quite diverse. Worlds with strong fortifications probably have around 15 platforms. Most seen is probably between 2 and 4.
It's gonna cost us both a whole lot of ships now to take out worlds... But I'm glad this levels the playing field in the maintenance cost department. Java will probably experience a backlash from the huge cost of these platforms soon. I know I had quite the struggle with it.

Currently we are building up... it is quiet... After the large fleet clashes pieces are being manouvered into place. Something is brewing for sure. I am nearly at max capacity. Which probably means Java already is heading towards me with his fast production; I'll post as soon as stuff develops!

Offensive

Good morning Admiral Cvok. Have a seat. No... I insist. Here; This morning the following report hit my desk. I best share it with you, so you know what is going on... and more importantly, what is expected of you.

Westernfleet admiral Cvok accepted the reported and read it with growing interest; I'll skip through the duty roster and fleet composition logs to the war effort.

Admiralty - Intelligence report 2407.0

- The last Cygni world has been lost; The aliens glassed the planet. None were left alive. Once again, every last man, woman and child was murdered.
- The Melkar system has been secured. Western fleet has fortified itself there, locking up this strategic chokepoint. We suspect the tiny alien worlds are riotting, but we are uncertain. We do not know if the aliens act like us. Specialized ships have been dispatched to clean up the last outposts. These ships have been named 'Cygni Avengers'.
- The Aliens have embraced weapon platform technology. Many platforms have been spotted throughout the galaxy. Most seem to be using standard anti proton weaponry. The aliens named them zippers. Experiments with them show that 'they hurt'.

- Our secret is out. Our Preatorians and Centurions have seen their first combat. We suspect the aliens have knowledge up to the 4th generation of Praetorians. The aliens now know of our complete mastery of light cruiser technology.
- The aliens have begun experimenting with light cruiser technology aswell. We have encountered a Firestarter class light cruiser.

For your convenience we've displayed the stats of these vessles.
[/color]

As you can see by these statistics the aliens have adopted some kind of new propulsion technique and are now able to keep up with our ships. The alien point blank defenses are still a problem and the alien 3rd generation polaron cannons have nullified the shields of the the Preatorean IV.
We do not think the aliens know that we mastered (light)cruiser technology well over a year ago.

As commanded our forward fleet has entered the Cygni system to reclaim it from the alien invaders. We have placed some temporary minefields there to keep away any more alien vessles. It is notable though that the aliens are on to us on that front and have deployed 'pavement' ships to counter us here. As you know, measures have already been taken.

The Werteken system is still cause for concern. The monkeys have glassed another one of our worlds there. Our 2 primary outposts are still holding and as to your command the Werteken fleet has begun offensive action.

Lastly, Expedition fleet has reported that they have been able to penatrate deeply into the enemy empire with ease. They are still on exploration, but will continue to hit and run as requested.

Unfortunatly the aliens have still not accepted our offer to let them live in their specially reserved piece of the galaxy.

Interesting indeed. It would show that we are making progress. But here and here and here, Cvok points to a few spots on the map, some troublesome situations still remain.
Yes. We know, Cvok. That's why we are sending you. 10th generation Centurion vessles will be ready next month. You are to take the flag ship and ram it through their collective monkey throats!.
It's time we ended this war. It's time we showed them monkeys what we are made off! It's time we bring the war to THEIR worlds instead of ours! They have killed to many of our people.

The Grand Admirals wings glowed gold with excitement and red with anger; One would almost think his wings looked like fire. A grand sight. The Grand Admiral grinned, displaying his fangs. Now go Cvok. You know what we must do. It pains me that we too must seed death, like the aliens did. But we must. History will show that we did the right thing. Go!

Yep. That's right. Bansai! I'm going on the offensive. All gears have been set in motion. More interesting times ahead!

Golden Age

Today it's newyears day, 2407.6. The great war of our age has lasted more than 6 years now. Thankfully, we are still alive.
For the first time in years this new years eve was celibrated widely by our people. We dare hope. In fact. Some of us think we have entered a golden age. I am among them myselve.
It all started nearly a year ago. The empire was struggling. The aliens had advanced ships comming with dosens at a time towards our frontiers. More than we could produce or maintain. For some reason the aliens seemed to have a major upper hand in productive power. But... that was then...
I still remember being on patrol in the Twilek System, bordering Melkar, one of the famous warzones of our time. Every month we worried that the aliens would decide to test our defenses, test our mettle on our side of the Melkar warp point. But thankfully, they never came. Oh... we were ready. At least, we thought we were. But, we can't be sure. Just a few months ago an alien exploration fleet jumped deep into our space in the south. They came further than they had ever gone before. So far even that they ran into one of our warp point fighter defense forces. It cannot have been more than 25 fighters, but still. The aliens swept them aside with their advanced polaron weapons asif they were nothing. Later we learned that our fighters had given their worth, as a single Praetorian Light Cruiser was able to get rid of the remaining alien forces. but still. They came. We don't know how many of them are still on their way.
This month, to our shock, an alien ship has been spotted inside the protected ring. We don't know how it slipped through. Fleet command dispatched 20 warships to deal with the apparent southern 'hole'.

Yes. We have warships to spare now. A few months ago our economy took a drastic turn. So drastic that we can now use all of our shipyards, planet- and spacebased, at their full capacity and still have tons to spare. You wouldn't beleive the amount of spare parts we need every month to keep the fleet up and running. But we can. We are growing. Expanding. Exploding nearly.
In the last few months, the emperors plan has come to fruitation. Nearly our entire race glared at the holo screens as one of our explorers aboard a 'Reiger' vessle landed on a world extremely different from our own. We still remember his legendairy words. 'This is one small flap for a myrtopian. But one giant flight for myrtopian-kind.'. He said those words while setting his feet on an empty, cold world without many gasses to surround his delicate wings. An iceworld was claimed as our own. In the 3 months after that our entire industry was devoted on the colonization effort. I do not know our exact number of worlds now, but a growth like this for sure has never been seen in the galaxy before. Most worlds were used for mineral production. In fact, any world with a bit of minerals was required to make at least SOME contribution to the empire. We grew. Enourmously. Combine that with the massive satalite groups scattered throughout the realm near fruitatios asteroid belts, and voila. A wealth for the empire, unparallelled.

We used our wealth. Our science. Everything.
Ofcourse, we aren't done yet... The Melkar system still has alien strongholds. A legion of our most modern warships are on their way. But worlds with 20 zipper-class platforms are still going to be a problem for whatever militairy might we try to display.

We were not stalled, however, in our northern frontier. Captain Crellion, a captain on a mine deployment ship, had been working in the northern Cyngi system for months. Evading alien vessles, attempting to reach the warp point from which the aliens spawned. He reached it finally and deployed nearly 50 mines. Cutting the aliens supplies off and allowing a rescue mission by our ships.
A warfleet of quite modern ships was let into Cygni and started spreading death among the monkeys. The monkeys saw this and tried to intervene with one of their larger fleets. In fact, the very fleet that had caused so much death there earlier. We nailed them. In a massive showoff our ships were victorious. Although the alien weapons are more advanced we used our own technologies to our full advantage. Our advanced armor tech combined with the heavy mounts used for our weaponry created wonderful results.

We have even more good news. At the other side of the black hole; in the Iolo system, our exploration fleet encountered a world. A suspecious world. A world large enough to hold 5000 million people. Allthough only 2500 million people reside there at the moment.
We aren't sure ofcourse, because we have not seen much of the alien empire. But, judging by the structures on this world, we suspect this is their origin.

Admiral Cvok himself took command of the first Senator class ship, as he is entitled to because of his newly appointed status of Senator of Defense. More members of the Senate want to be there when we visit Iolo. All Senators will be given command of their own vessle. 40 Senators are ordered. 40 will be sent. We can build them. We can maintain them. We will come.
We... have entered our golden age!

Ah yes, I do miss the immediate access to Space Yard Bases in BM. Yes... the BM tech tree is coming back to me... The old armour system; fewer, more intensive tech levels... Sometimes it's hard for me to put this story in perspective as I'm too used to IRM these days (where you never ever will run low on resources but getting advanced weapons is another matter).

Well, let's see how you handle your momentum. On a large scale war like this, it's quite easy to be stopped and re-draw the stalemate lines. Defensive building is easier than offensive building, so it'll come down to long-term resource projects (because Strategic warfare has no strategy in it at all, so you can't play smart).

I get the impression neither side's fleets are designed with long-term Logistics in mind. This is going to be a long war.

Uh, actually, I'll have to repeat what I said earlier... I'm in deep, deep doo doo...

Excerpt:

"What!?!" raged the general, "What do you mean the enemy is colonizing Ice planets?!"

"Uh, sir, there is more... They employ space yards, they are mining asteroids, they are easily outproducing us..."

"And what have we been doing all this time while they have accomplished that!?!"

"Uh, following your orders sir... To research robotics..." There seemed to be a touch of sarcasm in the young corporals tone.

The general looked up... and shot the young corporal....

Writing is far more a question of time than skill. There are moments of free-time where it's inconvenient to set up SE V and plough through a turn, yet it's ideal for writing a little at a time. Whether you can put a creative spin on your story and add an RP element is one thing, just finding the time and confidence to write at all comes first.

Yep, as per usual, life is short - do you want to invest a little time into learning the basics of storytelling (most of which you probably know of already) through practice? There are so many skills one can learn, but only so much time one can invest in them.

The Gathering
It seemed the Battle of Sygni caused some wrinkles to spread throughout the alien ranks. Our intercepts of the alien form of holo-vision showed us more grim news reports about

ships losts. Pictures were shown of our Centurion and Praetorian cruisers. We think their news editors added some extra special effects to our ships to show them. I must admit;

they do look scary the way the aliens portray them. But our daily news really does not show our ships with thousands of spikes on their hulls carrying the corpses of their race as

decoration. I swear; I do not know where they get those ideas. The militairy showed a group of concerned Myrtopians around one of the vessles and their clearly wasn't any corpse

there. Also the many spikes displayed on the alien news were not present on our Centurion.

After the battle of Sygni things remained quiete at militairy command. A bit too quiete even. The aliens seemed to have fallen back to Uzara, the system south of Cygni. We've sent

some Cannon Fodders to explore. But they were never heard of again. We suspect the aliens mined the system. Well. That's alright. Northern fleet needs time anyways. Repairs are

still ongoing on the Northern Fleet ships. These large battle fleet deployments have brought to light some logistical issues. Fueling this many ships truely is a troublesome job.

Repairing them, in space, away from spacedocks, even more. Our Surgeon Class ships are trying to reach the fronts, but their numbers are still scarce. They are heavily needed to

keep all the components working on our fleets. Worse even. Scetches are being made for huge tankers that carry nothing more than supplies for our already overstretched fleet.
Norterhn fleet will be alright though. Most reinforcements have arrived; and the main fleet is nearly repaired.

Militairy command issued a statement to us though. They told us that the aliens were refining their mining technology. They're not sure what that entails, but there's a good

chance that our current ships will not be able to detect the alien minefields. We've
