I do know that Meson cannons take up 20 points and anti proton beams take up 30 points... so you can stick more weapons on your ships with mesons...
But I have to study the difference further myself.

i prefer small mesons on fighters and troops as they take few space and on fighters/troops every point of space is valuable.

for ships i use more proton-beams because of the better accuracy, the accuracy only reduces half as much as meson.

I thought small mesons were the same size as DUC on troops and did about the same or less damage, or is that a mod? not sure for fighters though

The accuracy bonus of the APC is great. Also, beam weapons are instant-hits. Projectiles, on the other hand, take some time before they hit, thus giving the target a few miliseconds to get off more shots. The APC also definitely looks better.

Before the 1.33 patch Meson Blasters were the weapon of choice because of their size advantage. As of 1.33 they can't be used for planet bombardment so that makes the Anti Proton Beam the next best choice. I guess that this will be fixed in a future patch and we'll all switch back to MB's.

this is why i asked

Submitted by zastaver on Tue, 2007-04-10 17:37.

i had asked becaus my stock ship killer used mesons and anti peotons as secondary armerments to there main guns (null cannons) and i was thinking about simplfing my armorments

Haven't played stock since trying IRM but I would imagine Meson Cannons lost their planet strike abilities so they could keep their small size. As they were, it was no question what was best at max level. That change is nice in that you have an armament for ships that won't help with planets, but is unmatched versus any other gun, all else being equal.

Also, I could be wrong but I remember seeing somewhere that Anti-Proton Beams did damage over the duration of their shot, i.e. beam stream.

Personally, I like mixing things up anyway. Adds some life to the feel of the game when I'm doing different things and using various weaponry. Maybe not the most min/max I can do, but it makes it more fun to blaze into the thick of battle with lots of pretty colors going off. Laughing out loud

Sad as it is, in stock the weapon of choice is Depleted Uranium Cannons.

Failing that, it's all a matter of style. I personally prefer the Meson Blasters graphic. Eye-wink

Personally I go with Anti-Protons, only because of range.

I usually mix my early ships with Anti-Protons and Phased Beams. Anti-Protons hit the enemy first, then when they get closer phased beams give them an unexpected shock!

For Fighters, I dont think it makes too much difference whether you go with Meson/Anti Proton. Fighters are designed for close combat, so an Anti-Protons added range for me isnt as useful as the slightly harder hitting Meson.

However, as research is limited you probably cant afford to research both. My suggestion (though remember i'm a bit of a noob) is to research just Anti-Proton for your ships, and find a friendly computer A.I. who concentrates on Meson's to share tech with to cater for your fighters.
