Manual patching of Steam versions? |

A good friend of mine died recently and willed his computer over to me. I was poking around to see what all he left behind in the way of games and found Space Empires V. I played it a little but there were some bugs so I went to the site to get the latest patch but it won't patch because it is a Steam install and I can't access his Steam account because the password to his Steam and email died with him. Is there any way to force a Steam install to manually patch? I'm currently running v1.08. It would seem he hadn't played it in quite a while.
