memory issues with the latest patch

Submitted by brianb99999 on Sun, 2007-04-01 03:13. Space Empires V General

hmmm,
with latest patch I can play maybe 10-15 turns before crash due to memory leak. This is on a 2gb system with nothing else running in the background.

I don't know if this is related, but in version 1.33 it takes several seconds to shut down SE V, showing a white screen during this time. I didn't see this in earlier versions.
I didn't have any game crashes, but I hardly play 10-15 turns in a row.

I'm not really seeing why some people are having issues with Memory Crashes still, especially with such high amounts of RAM.

I only have 128MB of RAM, and I havn't had a single crash problem.
Obviously its going to run a little slow, but I ran up to 71 turns the other night in the latest BM in a Medium Sized galaxy with 6 empires at my throat.

No issues running it, just a few slowdowns. The 1.33 patch seems to me to have fixed a few of the Memory issues, but seemingly at the cost of some broken features (Strategies?)

I tend to agree that there is less of a problem with the memory leak since 1.33 than before it. I would also baulk at discribing it as a memory crash mostly the experiance was of the game slowly grinding to a halt, but if you had any sense and realised what was happening and saved quit and restarted before it did slow down to the point of stoping iy reraly wasent an issue and there was no crash. Exept after you had quit where it does still take a long time to exit and will sometimes become unresponsive.

Have you tried running the game in windowed mode? I always play in windowed mode and I experienced none of the memory leak problems, nor the painfully slow turn processing that seems to have plagued many other people. Admittedly I have a fairly high-spec machine, but others with high-end hardware seem to have been affected just the same. Even if you're not a windowed mode fan, give it a try anyway, just to see if it works. If it does, at least then you've got a workaround until Aaron fixes the problem.

I've never really noticed the memory leak problem( though I've not been playing it much recently ), but running in windowed mode, with the task manager running also, I did notice that memory usage for se5.exe increased steadily by about 1-2 mb each turn, in addition to major jumps of 10-15mb every now and again. Since the game originally only uses 50'ish mb ram, it takes a fair amount of turns before it gets problematic, though. This was with a large galaxy and 10 AI's.

sry, shoulda specified.

This is a 255 star system 20 empire game.
Currently at year 2408.0, I get between 2-5 turns before I get a crash.

I will try the windowed mode idea.

Thanks.

perhaps 255 systems, 20 players is just too much?

Does anyone else play 255 systems, 19 AI's?

Sugestions increase you virtual memory to over 6 meg defrag your primary drive (not suposed to but it helps) and make sure you have sufichent free space to fit a 6 meg Virtual memory in ie 8+ on the primary partition.

You will still get a slow down but having done that I get 30-60 turns of play before I do the save quit and restart thing which I think you will agree is beter than what you have now.

Definately defrag, even the system drive. The other thing is try clearing your temporary internet files, most of the OEM computers I've bought set the maximum size at something like 10% of the system drive, which will quickly bring most computers to their knees.

hmmm,

I'll definately defrag and try increasing the virtual memory. I always keep my temp internet files at 0%.
Im also going to try uninstall from the harddrive it is currently on and re-install it on the C drive (just on the off chance that in the hundreds of thousands of lines of code, he accidently references C: causing a crash?).

Thanks,
Brian.

Very likely a memory issue... even with a 2GB system with this large galaxy and 20 players SE5 will use 100-150MB of memory MORE every turn - I experienced it myself.
Turn processing takes 10-15 minutes on a AMD 2500+ - but that was with 1.25 and the slow battles Smiling

Surely, SE5 is not optimized for games on such a large scale... :X

Just to toss an idea out there...

... Is it possible that the memory leak has something to do with Steam? I for one am experiencing the memory leak and I do use Steam.

I have retail version.

I tried the virtual memory idea, got 4 turns before crash, will try playing it on my laptop instead (which is about 1/4 the specs of my PC) - see if that makes a difference.

and how do you play in windowed mode ?

I have a "grey" screen, I think the game clears the virtual memory or something like that when it shuts down.
Windowed mode => look into setup before entering the game

When you first run the game & you get the little box that comes up with Play, Setup, Readme, etc. click on Setup then click the Change button next to Video Mode (should be the second one), and then you get a big list of resolutions, Windowed should be at the top. Note that there's currently a bug where items in this list don't highlight properly, so just click on Windowed, nothing will seem to happen, but when you click OK, you'll see the change has been applied.

There seems to be some indefinable limit to the number of AI empires you can have before the memory leak kicks up harshly. With about 10 AIs in a game right now, it isn't so bad to process turns and saving. I know it makes a big leap when I have 20 or so AI empires to consider. So far, I haven't seen any effect with galaxy size itself. Rather, it is the size of the empires that would affect the game with larger quadrants. Medium quadrant size, with medium count of AIs seems to be a safe enough bet right now. Small count of AIs if you want to be on the safe side.

It's playable for a good while like this. I'm still enjoying the toying with the tech tree of IRM, so I am good. Yay for discovery! Laughing out loud

I'm on a P4 1.4 with 512mb RAM. My aging mutant of a computer is quirky, but it runs SEV otherwise fine.

I don't consider the memory leak as a big problem, since youjust have to restart the game to correct it. And even restarting every 5 turns or so isn't that annoying to me... (also don't have that problem in multiplayer)

MMmmm never had memory problems, and I got only 1.5 Gb RAM. maybe you could try, in Setup Options, changing the Video Memory Usage to safe. Dont know it this will help, but give it a try at least.
I dont think defrag can help you. Maybe a resident virus?
Im currently playing small universe, 13 AI and works perfect no mather how much turns do I play.

Well, good and bad news.

Good news is, its not my PC, as I get the same issue on the laptop (it also only plays 2-4 turns before crashing) with the same settings.
Bad news is, I e-mailed Aaron about this and have heard nothing back (when 1.33 first came out), so, when it will be fixed, who knows?

I will wait for fix before playing again.

Meanwhile, can anyone recommend a good mod, which modifies nothing but strongly improves the AI?

Thanks,
Brian.

With all due respect, memory leaks are a big problem in any piece of software, and restarting every five turns is certainly annoying. Increasing your pagefile is only a temporary solution at best. The max size for a pagefile under XP is 4GB, and I've seen this memory leak increase 150 to 230 MB in size a turn. Besides, relying on the pagefile will slow the game down even further(RAM>HD).

Good news...

It turns out the memory leak was due to the movement logs never being removed from memory. It's been fixed for the next patch...
