Two more noob questions

Submitted by TrajanX on Thu, 2007-03-29 13:14. Space Empires V FAQs

I'm sorry I keep asking stuff here -- this is probably my fourth post and almost a dozen questions. Thanks for everyone for being patient and trying to help!

1. I just discovered my first asteroid-belt system in SEV. What weird is, two of the asteroid fields have tiny colonizable worlds tucked inside of them. And enemy empires have colonized these. My question is, how do I attack these colonies? I really need them to establish resupply for my defensive position, but when I move ships into the sector, they don't attack. I can't colonize, because "planet is already colonized." I can't transfer troops onto the planet because I can't attack. And when I use the attack command, ships move into the sector, but don't actually attack.

Sorry if this is a known bug, but I hope I'm just missing something. (Using v1.25 and Balance Mod 1.04)

2. One of my space stations took a serious beating, nearly getting destroyed. I repaired it, but I just realized that it doesn't have any crew -- probably because the original crew quarters were destroyed. How do I re-crew it? It's in a populated system, but at a warp point. Or does this not matter? I think I remember reading somewhere about slower firing times if a ship is uncrewed, and if that applies to bases....

Thanks again for any help!

1. You should be able to attack them by using the attack command to move ships into the hex unless you have some sort of treaty with you enamies which has a non aggression clause in which case you will need to declare war

2. Not sure on this one. I would try refiting it with a ship yard ship but there is no way to transfer crew without being in orbit of a populated planet

As I wrote in the OP, i did try using the attack command, and it didn't work.. I double checked, i have no treaties with the empire (i'm at war with them).

Any other ideas?

Just to add something abotu question 1, I *suspect* the problem is that the asteroids are providing occulsion? The game maybe is confused because the planets themselves ought to be "cloaked" in that I shouldn't be able to even see they are there. But, being planets, I can see them. And I see the enemy empire flags on them, too -- but NOT in the system map (weird, huh?) -- I only see the empire flags in the bottom center box when I click on the hex. (Does that make sense?)

So maybe the game prevents me from attacking, because the enemy population is stealthed. The buggy part of this, however, is that this is a PLANET, not a ship, so (1) I don't really think it should be cloaked! -- and the game agrees, since it is only cloaking the presence of enemy, not the planet itself, and (2) if I can move a colony ship into the space and colonize the planet, I ought to be able to realize by that point that there are enemy on it, and I ought to get the option to attack them.

Anyway, this is just theorizing. Does anyone know what's actually going on? And if there's any way for me to work around this? If nothing else I'm going to be real bummed if I'm never able to win because I can't kill those two colonies.... (maybe eventually I just have to get planet smashing technology).

(2) You can't recrew your space stations. Use Master computers instead.

That's too bad about the space stations....

I wonder if its possible, as a future change, to make resupply facilities also send out crew each turn? It would make sense, I mean, presumably, having a resupply depot means that the planet is not only manufacturing supply and ordinance, but also transporting it (via small civiilan ships, etc.?) to ships and planets in the system. There's no reason they couldn't move crew members around too. Just a suggestion for future patches or the next version!

couldn't you rebuild crew quarters in them by upgrading or something? by sending a repair ship to it? if you replace the crew quarters woin't that put new crew in?

hmmm.. thinking about it.. prolly no.

The crew is essentially a bug. I'm not sure if it was fixed in the 1.32 patch or not.
