SOTS vs Space Empires

Submitted by lastofthelight on Tue, 2007-03-20 03:07. Space Empires V General

Having read the horrible reviews Space Empires got, and the good ones Sword of the Stars got, there is only one question upon my mind:

Are those reviews on crack?

Space Empires V, some AI issues aside, is probably the best 4x game I have ever played. And...I'm not sure Sword of the Stars counts as 4x. The strategy is limited to building ship designs and sending them to specific places. Thats it. It has a RTS component, but in truth - you play very little part in it. And the interface is the most annoying thing I have ever encountered in 20 years of using a computer.

So how did that peice of crap get better reviews? I can't /stand/ the game. I mean, alright - Space Empires V has a bit of a learning curve, but thats to be expected in this genre.

yeah, i also checked sword of the stars out and had realy problems with the interface. heard somewhere that in an addon it should get changed.
till that happens sots won´t be of any interest to me.

Most times the test of the games is this:

1. At the most editoriral offices has one guy test all games
2. This guy hhas no time and pure stress
3. This guy get the package and read the sys requierments:
- High: good
- Low: bad
4. Then he started that game
- Lost of fancy graphics and colors: good
- simple graphics and colors: bad
5. manual
- needed: bad
- not needed: good
then he tests the game mostly not more then 5 hours (no time for longer tests mostly)
6. -> that mean he doesn't can go deep in the game!

my 5 cent!

How could any reviewer gve SEV a good review? even now there are still some game ending bugs on that alone it would get hammered and should IMO.

I do enjoy the game but atm that's probably more because I like tweaking it here and there not playing it as the memory leak makes that a pain.

I got SOTS prior to getting SEV. I liked SOTS at first, but quickly ran into many flaws in the game design, quickly started modding it. But the support for mods is no where like SEV, a lot of the things i wanted to do i could not. And the devs have made sure we could not mod the AI. So that game rate pretty low in my book now.

For all it's flaws, SEV has the most potential to be a great game, especially after a good modding session Smiling.

You see, its simple, really.

- Sword of the Stars is a very simple game for the masses, and even a baboon can learn to play it in 15 minutes, if it doesnt get distracted by pretty graphics.

- Media is being run by hairy primates of various shapes and sizes. They like mindless button mashing and bananas, not complex 4X-strategy like Space Empires.

- Thus, media liked SotS more and gave it positive reviews.

That is the key it will eventually be a great game but at the present time I would not recomend it to a friend.

It also dident help that SEV was anoyingly buggy on release either. SEV is now not buggy and I would not hesitate to recomend it to my friends as most of them like this sort of game play starfleet battles etc have higher degrees sometimes even in useful subjects. I would not recomend it to some one whose idea of a good game was a non role playing first person shooter or a basic RTS

It is as it is always horses for courses.

It was the memory leak that I was refering to, and even with that I still play but it is terribly annoying. Other than that it would have to be the brain dead AI in a stock game.

Chuckle yes your right but doesn't change the fact that I can understand any low review this game got. Any one that thinks this game deserves a glowing review is smoking and not sharing Eye-wink

Myself when ever the memory leak gets fixed is when I would recomend it, you should never have to have autosave every turn on just because you know it's matter of time before the game locks up.

Oh yeah, space empires definatly deserved the review it got...WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT: It wasnt really playable till oh say...1.13? and it still had its quirks. I think its fine now, except for the system wide storm effect... I'd really like to see a reveiwer try it out on 1.32...

Emissive armor bug that got carried over to IRM is a pain ... that and the storm bug are the two bugs I have the most problem with.

Sword of the Stars? Got it, couldn't get into it. Its just not a good game, IMO.

See though, I can't think of a single major pc game in the past 10 years that didn't have those sorts of bugs in the release version. Oblivion, Master of Orion 3, (even Sword of the Stars), Morrowind, Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Deus Ex...most games /do/ have these game-ending bugs, unless they are slated for a specific console-only release.

The only reason (or at least the big one) that I saw negative reviews for was the learning curve and a perceived lack of in-game documentation. Thats it.

What reviews were you reading...Thats not why i read....And seriously the first version of the game well...It was tempormental. You would get crashes for pressing buttons in the wrong order, using certain commands ect. I love the game now of course, but i guess its like when you have a baby...and the 3 a.m. crying comes...but then the baby grows into a little toddler and well (1.13), 3 a.m. cryings become less frequent, if anybody knows what im talking about...

Re: SOTS vs Space Empires

I bought SotS about 4 months ago, and was disappointed in the lack of interacting you get to do with the ship design and the improbability that a solar system can only have one colonizable planet. Also, a lot of solar systems in the game aren't reachable by the node travel that the human race uses. I've been playing the Space Empires series for several years, and have come to enjoy what this series has offered, and was disappointed when it failed to reach the standards of a game by what some would call a lesser company. Even though SEV has a lot of bugs right now, in less than a year the core game will be much better and modders will have added and expanded on it so that any type of player could enjoy it. SotS's interface was poor, the playability is poor, but the idea is great, and if they actually spent some time on it, it might one day catch up to the SE series.

With the new nextgen consoles with Internet access, even console games now can be patched. Laughing out loud

All I have to say about SotS: it is inferior to SEV. A casual game, nothing more.

Sots looks very nice and I am sure it would be fun to play if you could work that UI but and this is saying some thing given that I remember and not fondly the days of MS and other DOSS and have seen a lot of bad user interfaces quite the most impenetrable user interface I have ever come across. I down loaded the demo as I like 4e type games so why not try it and after trying to play for half an hour and getting to turn three with nothing done and apparently no prospect of doing stuff uninstalled the program.

I will admit to not playing the tutorial but I almost never do that in any game and resent it where games make you do one. any one who moans about the SEV UI should be forced to play SOTS for an hour without doing the tutorial or if they have already played it try to do stuff on the old IBM PC I use as a monitor support as I recall it still has MS DOS 3.02 on it no sort of GUI and my least loved spreadsheet and word processor packages Sic Supercalc and WordStar.

Goes off to wash as thinking about that set up makes me fee dirty

You didn't miss much. The tutorial isn't actually a tutorial, its just a quick-start randomn game with a few screens explaining the concept of the game and a few of the very obvious interface elements.

I think one thing your missing here, is SotS if thier first attempt at a making a Space TBS. I think SotS is a rather good game and for a first atempt it has a lots less bugs in the game.

Instead of knocking one game over the other why not support both if you are able and keep them alive for the future.

There is just not that many out there and the ones that are, need supporters.

I agree it has potential but there is a limit to my time even if I do get the changes I need with the way the univese works. specificaly me liveing for ever there not being any need for me to sleep and the day increasing to at least seventy two hours. Wining the lottery so I dont have to work would also help.

The UI is inpenitrable and it made it dificult for me to like the game as much as I wanted to its very definatly a 9/10 for effort other than that I cant realy compare it with SEV as I never got to play it
