FQM 5.00 Beta 8

Announcing the posting of FQM 5.00 Beta 8, for SE5.

Beta 8 is not savegame-compatible with Beta 7.

Beta 8 version history:
1. Changed - Revamped star textures.
2. Added - Red Dim and Red Orange star classes.
3. Changed - Star colors now appear in more realistic proportions. Red and orange stars dominate the galaxy, and the huge white and blue stars are comparatively rare.
4. Added - Diamond quadrant generation added to solar_systems.py script. Diamond quadrants now place systems appropriate to FQM in the specific location slots.
5. Added - White Dwarf star systems.
6. Added - Logarithmic, Shell and Flower Spiral type quadrants. For more random system type results, it is recommended to rerun the _solar_systems.py Python script.
7. Changed - Planet Stellar Objects now have new temperature, gravity and radiation formulas. Gas giants have more gravity. None planets have more radiation. Temperature takes planet type into accound (ice planets are coldest, Venus rock planets are hottest). Minimum temperature is now -240 C, rather than absolute zero.

Please note that this is a work in progress. There are bound to be quirks, which you should report. All suggestions for improvement are welcome!

Is it now possible to generate galaxies with the 2 arms? As in the 'new shapes' thread?

just seen this in IRM 9a and it looks georgius only thing I am not sure about are the fluffy nebulae clouds being used on black holes the look very nice but L am not at all sure they look right around a black hole. if its posible I would like a glowing accretiaon disk arround the hole itself making it look even blacker.

About the lightnings. Well, i think they could use a small revamp. In beta 8 they look really blurry and not very realistic. I think there should be less lightnings visible, but make the cloud light up randomly like in real electric storms. Of course, all depend how much of this can be done with the current engine...

Ummm...Well I was playing a hotseat game of BM 1.05 (incluedes FQM) on ancheint. Whenver you first eneter a black hole system, There is nothing there. If you go to system report, then it says it is a black hole system. However, on the next turn the black hole will apear with its spininess, and you will have ships moved two hexes towards the center...Is this a problem with FQM or BM?

I noticed that in this new version the threaded spiral is all wierd with a lot of stars just on the border forming a box around the map. This didn't happen before so unless i'm very unlucky with generation it seems strange.

I'd have to say about a quarter to about a third of all stars are around the edge forming a "frame" on the map.

edit: it did this with spiral arm as well, the stock quadrant generation

If you have too many systems for spiral quadrants, you'll get a bunch squished on the edge as you described. It works best for quadrants between 40-60 systems usually.

I've seen that same black hole display problem with v1.25 BM 1.04 & FQM beta 7.

The system is completely empty when you enter it the first time, on the following turn the clouds and the black hole will appear.

It happened for me in stock 1.25 btw, so its probably not an issue with FQM or BM.

I'm not sure what that question has to do with FQM...
