Annoying Fleet Thing

Submitted by Marnok on Sat, 2007-03-17 08:42. Space Empires V General

not sure if this has been commented elsewhere.

Has anyone had the problem, where ships decide that since they can't take part in a battle, they will retreat and break up the fleet?

I had one transport decide to flee in a battle where my huge fleet was pounding a single wounded frigate. It took the "fleet" so I had a fleet of one ship escaping, and a pile of unfleeted ships in the battle area, requiring me to reorganize.

There ought to be a difference between a ship thinking "I am no use, I'll stay out of the way, but remain in the sector" and it thinking "I'm no use, I shall run to the nearest asteroid and hide!" Perhaps where a ship is in a fleet, it should only retreat when the whole fleet does?

I expect someone will tell me there's a setting to make this so, but I have not found it.

I was having the same problem with my carriers fleeing even though they still had fighters to tend to... The way around this problem is to arm even your ship tenders (repair bays) with a CSM and set them to max range. they'll stay in the battle and should stay a low priority target.

As an aside it would be nice to have a setting that says stay our of harms way, but don't retreat. I'll have to look in to the coding of the tactics if there is a setting for no retreat...

SEV, more than a feeling.
