wormhole beam ??? and whats the point... |
hey ppl...
sry to disturb you...
a friend of mine and me were just playing a little game and got to the tech:
WORMHOLE BEAM weapons....
okay sounds nice... researched it, build it in some ships and...
??????
It beams enemy ships to near points of the map ???
Whats the point of that ???????
or what do we do wrong ? forget etc ???
please help us....
thanks
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
They are I suspect intended to break up attacking formations and to allow the firers fleet to engage parts of it and destroy it peace meal. I don’t think that they are intended as any thing other than support weapons.
Variety is the point of this game so thats as much the point of them as any thing else

Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
If you were to use a worm hole weapon, with a long range weapon. You could get a couple long range shots off then zap there way out of range again.... move closer and get a couple more long range shots off. The trick is to stop using the wormhole weapon, after you've disabled there weapons or engins. Otherwise your chasing them around the screen trying to kill them off.
wormhole weapon
1. defense and get away.
2. used with longrange CSM type weapons.
3. Other uses?
SEV, more than a feeling.
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
Qusetion is, whether repulsor isn't better for this purpose.

Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
I don't have any experience using a repulsor. But yes it sounds like it would.
SEV, more than a feeling.
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
Repulsor is too small a range and just pushes back, try modding the wormhole beam so it also does timed control loss for around 5 seconds and its a lot of fun!
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
I'd try using it on otherwise unarmed ships to increase survivability. Maybe make it autohit....
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
A component allowing wormhole movement on your own ship would be nice, especially if you could control it. Reminds me of the Displacement Device the Andromedans use in Star Fleet Battles.

Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
I loved the weapon by the same name in Master of Orion, but I have yet to be convinced that it isn't utterly useless in SEV.
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
its good for carrier defenses, deloy the fighters far away and when enemys aproach carier zap them away and send the fighers. repeat as neccesary

Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
It's rare I get to this tech level in a game but when I do I stuck a few of these on planets which help when getting attacked by large numbers.
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
Most useless items are added for "flavor".
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
Wormhole and repulsor beams work wonders in planetary defense. Weapon platform mounts get a nice boost in range. This allows very long range direct fire weapons.
Adding a shorter range (130 ls tops) repulsor/wormhole beam would boost the defense.
When opponent closes to the planet (or base), you can fire with the long range weapons, causing damage.
Once then get closer, wormhole/repulsor sends them back, further away. This way they can't get in range to shoot.
Your planet is pretty covered from direct fire damage, if you have enough removers. Also, long reload times for the long range guns become less of a problem: Why worry about 8 second reload time, when it takes opponent 20 seconds to close in again? If you can move the opponent further away then they can move in the time it takes to reload the beam, the opponent would never reach the weapon range. (obviously you will need one beam/ship to do this in that case)
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
I think it would add a lot more flavor to the game if the reload was extreem and the cost was also just as high and was very very large...but when shot has a chance to warp them out of battle somewhere into the solar system the combat started in.
but yeah other then that I guess the planet defense idea sounds good, and if you can work that into larger ship designs, not as a primary weapon, but more of as a fun add on and watch the battles to see if you send them away. they dont sound that...useless
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
Lol this is one I asked Aaron to implement a new target for SELF So I could make a wormhole weapon that had the Class PD with a range of 2 so if a missile was about to hit the ship would randomly jump out of the way. . Thought this would be a cool component alas still cant target self with weapons . . . as of 1.66

Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
I use wormhole beams quite a bit. Great for defensive fleets where you expect to be outnumbered. I put one on each ship in a small fleet. Though it depends greatly on the attacking ships, I put more emphisis on firepower than even speed. Ships close in, defenders fire, each volley from each ship either damages or cripples a ship then will warp that ship or (if done correctly) an undamaged ship out of range. That way, if the defending ships can withstand the attackers in time for the next reload, they're survivablilty jumps dramaticly. Add in some shield regenerators and by the time those who were beamed out get back into range, they have to deal with full shields again.
Of course, this isn't a foolproof stratagy but it does help. for the addition of a single weapon on each ship, it can alter the outcome of a battle.

okay thank you very much...
Re: wormhole beam ??? and whats the point...
Hi,
The manual indicates the damage to be random target movement. The only reason I can think of for equiping this weapon is defensive. If your single scout ship is being overwhelmed by enemy ships then fire this weapon and hope they don't appear in front of you. LOL.
Now if they (you know, them) wanted to make this weapon really
fearsome the random wormhole might be outside of a system (no wormhole back). Those ships might require years at system speeds (non-warp) before reaching a system with a wormhole.
