How to fire on multiple targets?

Submitted by emgluon on Thu, 2007-03-15 07:08. Space Empires V General

I am on my fust proper game of SEV, patched with balanced mod. on my first attempt to build a space base i ran into a little problem.
i intended to build a space base armed with 6 anti matter tropdeo and the rest armour and shields. i then tested the design against a lot of my first generation frigates. it'll win if it's 1 vs 8, any more and it'll lose.
what really annoy me is that the space base will fire all six of its tropdeo against single ship one at a time. the tropdeo have a damage of about 100kt each and the frigate have a health(no armour or shields) of about 325kt. so the optimal firing sequence would be that 2 ship is targeted with 3 tropdeo each. if i can make the AI do this, i should be able to win when faced with more frigates.
the problem is i can seem to be able to get the AI to do this. i've tried to change the strategy settings and it dont work. i went into customizing the strategy and set the
target order to [total damage

## WHAT THE HECK, THERE IS SOMETHING THE COMPUTER DONT LIKE ABOUT MY POST. WELL HERE IS THE REST OF IT

total damage less than 50% structure and various other setting, it dont works.

so the question is, how can i make the ai target more than one ship at a time when i know that if i fired all the weapons at that single ship it will be overkill.

one last thing, problems like this is why MOO2 with its turn based combat is the best 4x game out there.

I think to do what you're looking to do, you have to have a look at Strategies.txt and reduce the amount of overkill in the strategies, though by default it's at 150% of total structure, which should do nicely.

The problem I think is that the AI doesn't know how to 'wait' to see how many ships are in a combat. The first ship comes into range, and as far as the AI is concerned, that's the only ship it has to deal with, so it fires everything it's got at the one ship. After multiple ships are in range, you should see the AI spreading it's fire a bit better.

There's also the question of enemy PD, at least with missile types. If it did only fire 3 at each ship, and that ship could shoot them down, then what good is it? Espscially if 6 missiles would have been enough to swamp the enemy defenses and land some hits.

For direct fire weapons, this doesn't directly apply. But for missiles, though, it migth be a little more complicated than at first glance.

There is no way I know of to order ships to target more than one target, except by the TTD% that should be fixed by the next update. Although there is a way to use '<' and '>' in any post, I can't quite remember how at the moment. You may also select 'Escape HTML' in the input format selection under the post text box to use any special symbols. ----- Space for rent - please contact owner

Can't you tell different weapons to target specific targets?

SEV, more than a feeling.

If you manually control the battle you can assign specific weapons specific targets, but if it's on similtanious turns your just done for.

I hope this will be fixed, but I doubt it. The coding would have to take into account many things.

Space Empires combat was turn based, up until this latest iteration. I prefer the real-time combat -- it's just so much prettier.

The programming for targeting really needs a lot of work in the game. I was just testing space bases tonight, and I cannot get them to target ANYTHING except the PD to fire on missiles and drones.

Here is my thread on my own problem:
http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/node/3699

Are we going to see an improvement in the next patch? Ships should really be able to see all of the targets on the map (particularly if they have 'combat sensors,' and be able to prioritize targets and shoot at different ones as they come within range, instead of dumping all of their firepower on a single target when there are actually 10 more ships. Or would the AI then outsmart itself?

In tactical combat there was a button (I forgot what it was called) where you could select which weapons to fire on a certain ship. If you look around for the button while the combat is paused (space bar pauses/unpauses) you should be able to find it.
