Product Support?

Submitted by JeffGeorge on Wed, 2007-03-14 08:15. Technical Support

From another thread:

This error:

TDirect3DxFile.Start - Can't find xfile

is happening again.... What the hell causes it and what's the fix?

What is the official channel for support on this product after you've already laid down your cash? In a current savegame the program crashes with this error every time I try to select a particular system, turn after turn. I had the same error in previous savegames, as well as in a savegame of Starfury. In all cases the only solution I discovered on my own was to completely reinstall. I refuse to continue doing that for every gave of SE V I play. I would like to get the problem fixed or get a refund. Who supports this game, or is the customer just SOL after buying it?

Based on the text of the error, one of the .x models used in the game is being reported as missing. It would also explain why re-installing seems to fix this error. Does this error re-occur for you though each time you go to load a saved game? Are you using a custom set? Are you running the latest version?

For resolution, I would e-mail the save game with a good description of the error to MM himself at se5 at malfador dot com.

Drop an e-mail with the offending attached save game to and give aeron a couple of days to get back to you if you want a fix. Contact Stratergy first or whoever you bought it from about a refund

hope that helps

I will send it to Aaron.

As far as specifics, I'm just playing stock. Every game I've started so far seems to encounter this problem at some point or other. The current game is only about ~60 turns in and it started about 5 turns ago when I built a Gravitational Shield (or something like that) in the system. At that point any time I try to select the system I get the error.

The strange thing is that when I had the error with Starfury it actually included the path and name of a file, which existed exactly where it said it couldn't find it. Peculiar. The only references I found to this error online were cases where the file was legitimately missing.

I really don't want to have to get a refund, but this game is exasperating enough as it is without being able to play a game to completion.

a bit late, but migth still help someone

I had the same error in my Game, which was caused by a xfile missing which was called in a buggy shipset

everytime certain ship was build (organic starbase) the game crashed and I wasnt able to load again

I went into the Description file (cant say filename atm as Im at work) and went though ALL shiptypes and looked it the xfile was aviable under the filename given.

They should be named like "blabla_organicmine.x" in the file, but sometimes there werent different .x files for organic ships so I just changed it to "blabla_mine.x" and it was fixed
