.....i mean.....this game must have de DUMBEST AI i have ever seen.......the AI designs suck (i beated several light cruisers with a single destroyer, who emerged from the fight untouched), they never use point defense weapons, making them easy targets for fighters (even in small numbers), also, the AI apparently does not defend its planets with troops....the AI seems to never get beyond the light cruiser size, too.....
I colonized a bunch of planets and, a lot of turns later, I was producing around 70.000 research points, while my closest "competitor" was barely making 20.000 points (and had more planets and population than me), other empires barely had any research.....in fact, some stupid empires were producing more (useless) intelligence points than research points........you probably already noted all the things describid above while playing, so my conclusion is that as long as the patches or mods fix these issues, the game is practically unplayable......

try fine tuning your enimies, by giving them their full bonus, as well as a bunch of free tech levels, that you don't take... you can reach a point where you handycap your self enough that the AI kicks your #$##!
I'm not saying this is you but... every game I've ever played always has people complaining about how extremly easy it was for them... If your so advanced then just give the AI some free advancements.

Have you tried the IRM mod? it stays closer to the original techtree and a lot of work has been done on it's AI.
