Screen Flicker

Submitted by JeffGeorge on Mon, 2007-03-12 14:36. Space Empires V General

Has anyone figured out what causes the strobe light effect on some systems?

What type of video card do you have in your machine? Are you running v1.25?

On one system it works fine. On another I get the flicker, with version 1.25. The video card is an on board Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset with 128 MB RAM. It's definitely not designed for fancy graphics, but I would like to be able to run on this system for testing out various things. Unfortunately, the strobe lighting effect is enough to drive me nuts.

Your not running SLI by any chance are you? A friend of mine does and he gets that problem in many games including this, usually games that are old or weren't written with SLI in mind.

edit: NVM just read your last post... those onboard intel video cards are known to give games problems.

I guess I'll pop a different one in. It can't hurt.

There is flicker related to the 3d engine as it also affects star fury which uses the same engine. It seems to be made worse by popup up alerts in the background but will happen any way. It seems to involve some stutter in refreshing the screen and a brief grey screen showing during that process

I never ever had it with my old system, ATI card.

I get it on my new system, Nvidia card. Worse when IE is open, but never have any popups, so somehow related to popups is out, but related to page refreshing may be it.

I don't use IE, but I usually have Firefox open. I get no flicker on the system with the NVidia card but I do on the other system. And it's instant; as soon as I load the game it looks like a freakin' disco.

Any solution to this? The screen on my new computer flickers every couple seconds, making the game unplayable. My previous machine didn't have this problem.

New computer specs:
3.21 GHz Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor
3 GB RAM
Windows Vista 64 bit
ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series Graphics Adapter

Had this happen only once, but after a few flickers it took my complete machine with it as it crashed. The continued flashes on my 24" were almost epilesy inducing :s

2.375 GHz Athlon 64 X2 (stable & cool OC for 2.2GHz 4400+ on Socket 939)
2GB RAM
Windows XP 32bit SP2
Geforce 8800GT 512MB RAM (not oc'ed)
Latest official nVidia drivers

I have never had this while using my 256MB 7800GTX with the otherwise identical setup. Been playing SEV since it became available.
