how to transport space stations

Submitted by hahntsak on Fri, 2007-03-09 13:18. Space Empires V General

the attack base and defense base can be built but how do I a)get them in orbit above planet, b)get them to remote location, c)other planet location?

I'm using demo currently but have already ordered retail copy.
I tried to make a carrier and tried to load station on it. not working. station can't move according to rules. maybe I'm missing something.

You need to have a ship with the Space Yard component (available at Space Yards level 10+ in stock) to construct a remote base in a sector without a regular space yard.

bases need to be built on site by a ship with a shipyard component as they can never move under their own steam. In the Stock game which is the Demo you neet do have shipyards at tl10+ to get a ship yard component. You cant load Bases onto ships to transport ships though that would be a nice idea for a mod.

Its annoying to have to build space stations and starbases on site, especially starbases (with their huge construction times) especially as most construction ships don't tend to mount offensive weaponry (you want them to stay out of combat, not get shot up before finishing the construction projects!).

It would be nice to see a new classification of ship, however : tug. Available only to Frigates (ie - the smallest ships) these ships should have the ability to take any one other ship (up to and including massive starbases) under tow, at a rate of 2 sectors per turn movement ... THAT'S something I'd like to see added at some point.

The tug idea is pretty good, I've had damaged ships slowly get repaired and it would be nice to be able to tug them out of a sector...

SEV, more than a feeling.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but if you research all of the starship class designs you end up with "Baseship" which is a mobile battle station. Slow, but mobile and able to pack a tremendous amount of fire power. I love parking them near warp points that I don't want someone sneaking through....

Also, to the damaged ship point - I usually build a light cruiser with either a repair station or a space dock componenet and send it out as a resuce ship to recover my damaged units in the field.

thanks so much. I'll check out the shipyard component for a ship. this game is so good in the demo, that I already bought it.
if you get the shipyard component do you need a minimum amount of supplies on the same ship?

t The ship needs to be in supply the same way any other does in order to work so build it with supply pods after all they are not that heavy and its remark able how much supply they will hold with a little research in that direction.

Base ships exist but need you to have researched all previous ship sizes and base sizes they are also relatively easily out maundered despite there ability to move by any thing smaller than a dreadnought

You're correct about the base ship being easily out manuevered by anything smaller - and if you don't arm them with long range weapons your opponent can simply "stand off" and take them apart a piece at a time. I usually include a few fighter bays for just such an occasion. I also tend to include a space dock on my base ships and use them as more of an armored, mobile fall back position during invasions and I make sure that they have a decent escort of picket ships along for the ride.

Another good trick with the space dock component in a ship is to include a drone launcher in the design as well. That way you can have the ship make and launch drones wherever you send it. Might not seem all that useful, but I use ships like this to restock my fleets while they're far a field in enemey territory. Just build a drone that's all supply pods or ordenance(other than the minimum componenets) and then launch it and strip it of all the supplies by transfering thier cargo to the rest of the fleet (when they're created the come with a full load of supplies!).

it would be cool if you can order a space yard to build build things in modules(for a slight cost increase inversly related to tech level in "modularization") which could be shipped to a specific location (as you would any other cargo item) kind of like how we are building the ISS currently

All the above is coorect.

I concur. One trick I use is to build a "seed" starbase to help construct itself into the final project. For example:

I wanted to build a starbase on an asteroid belt chalk-full of minerals and load it with miners. I threw the design together with some good defenses and, without further thought, flew my space yard ship to the belt. Lo and behold, 52 turns required, so I ordered my lovely secretary to have a team of entrepreneurs dispatched to the site pronto.

I went to design and put together a starbase with minimum requirements and built it. That only took a couple turns, of course. The max you can retrofit a ship (or base) is 50% over the original construction cost. I used the designer to make intermediate base designs each 50% greater in materials than the previous. My final design included a space yard and a repair bay, along with everything I originally wanted.

Starting with the "seed" starbase, I retrofitted the base all the way to the final design on the same turn. *Watch your stored resources* Using this method, the base basically constructed itself, and the whole thing finished in less than half the turns it would have otherwise taken.

Using this method, not only will the starbase help build itself, but it may add to defense as it is built.

I'm sure this method is posted somewhere, but I haven't seen the post.

Good hunting!

what about changing starbases from a ship to a unit? would that let a freighter decked out with cargoholds haul around a starbase? i imagine that later on with high cargo levels and dreadnaught hulls, you could get quite a big hauler...

The closest thing to a unitary starbase design is the ringworld or sphereworld, the ultimate in SEV engineering feats.

ha ha. nice way to construct powerful starbases. with stackable repair yards you could have a large base up in no time.

You could almost do any of the Larger ships in just a few turns that way. Just have Spacestations with repair bays around your planet. Build a bunch of empty hulls and then retrofit.
The only time consuming part would be building the hulls... very interesting!

There's a Space Yard component that can be placed on ships or bases. It allows for the construction of items in space, for example at a warp point. Often players will build defense or space yard bases on warp points for defensive purposes. A ship can be retrofitted in any sector that contains a space yard...

Use a Frieghter and add a Shipyard component, engines, brdge, etc. Once built you will have a mobile shipyard. Fly it to the backside of a Warppoint that needs defended and start making Mines or Fighters right on the spot.

I think you will need a spaceport in the system to get resources to the base, but otherwise its a smaller version of a standard shipyard.

Oh, the ship will need a Minelayer and Fighterbay to hold the newlybuilt units and to deploy them.

Do the Emergency Movement components work on bases?

Baseships are handy, but they can't outdo the sheer firepower and insane range of a starbase with massive mount guns can have.
Also, bases are cheaper to maintain iirc.

He's how you do it , research space yards to 10 and you get a space yard facility , it 650kt heavy so you need a good ship to put it on , move the ship whit the space yard where you need and buid stuff on the spot .

By the way, why there is this limit of no more than +50% retrofitting? To annoy people with useless micromanagement?
Were you supposed to be able to do it only once per turn? Because right now you can retrofit a ship as many times per turn as you wish (at least in simultaneous)!

it annoyed me too. i changed it in settings.txt to 250% so i could upgrade my really old ships. i think i was initially done to avoid creating ships with just the bare minimum and then do a single retrofit to a fully functional ship. (so intead of spending 5-10 turns to create a ship you created the shell in one and then retrofitted and repaired components in another 1-2 turns.)

But it doesn't make sense, since you can still do it, with more micromanagement of course. But you probably won't play SEV if you at least don't like micromanagement a little bit!

I've placed a request in the BM forum:
