3d Units

Submitted by Locii on Mon, 2007-03-05 20:51. Space Empires V FAQs

Currently units are displayed from a #race#_unit_combat_textured.bmp. What I want to know is there any way to get the original 3d to be used instead?

Guess I will answer my own question. I was wondering why there were .X files for fighters, sats and drones if the games doesn't use them. However the games does use the unit .x files, but only in ground combat. I did manage to get the .X format in space combat by changeing the Vehicle Type in the VehicleSizes.txt from "Fighter" to "Ship" but that only defeated the purpose because now its a ship and not a unit and therfore cann't be loaded onto a transport, planet or carrier.

There is a good reason why units are not displayed in 3d in space combat. You can have lots of units on screen during combat along ships, asteroids and planets, enough to make weaker computer choke. To reduce the load, units are bmps. Besides, it's rare that you zoom close enough to notice they are bmps...

Some of ;us do notice it, however.

Maybe there should be a setting in the launch screen for high detail units, which toggles them between being .bmps and being models?
