Point-Defense variety?

Submitted by Twad on Sat, 2007-02-17 01:07. Space Empires V General

A question about the various point-defenses.
Im using the demo.
There are ..5 different models;

The Beam PD; Long range, slow firing, not too heavy. I use it on specialised ships.
The Blaster PD; Medium range, insane ROF, very light, i research that jewel asap.
The Cannon PD, medium range, slow firing, so-so heavy, i dont use it, since i have blaster PD.

The Bomblet and Flak, i didnt test them a lot, and i fail to see their usefulness. The bomblet have great range.. the Flak i just dont know...

Are you guys using Flaw and Bomblet? What are your choices when you use PD?

combination of them to offset the overkill problem.
Mostly PD blasters thanks to their 10kT volume and great rate of fire.

I thunk therefore i wuz.

Flack cannons are the longest range without ammo use.
Bomblet Missiles are seekers in their own right, so I use them on WP's for fighter destroying, ship to ship you could get into firing bomblets to seek bomblets and they then fire back to seek yours.

Bomblets can cause some damage to normal ships from what I have seen though their primary target is seekers and units. Amunition (ordinance) useage is not a great consideration when it comes to PD weapons since ita almost always one point

Adding my own $.02, I have to this point been unable to get bomblet missiles on the same weapons platform to split their fire among multiple targets. PD cannons and flak cannons will, bomblets won't.

Mmm mm, interesting info. Thx.

Without ammo, nice guns are just sophisticated clubs.

After some testing, what you said proved to be true (flak superior range i didnt test it yet, and they dont use any ammo) Bomblet missiles are awesome! And in bonus, being seekers, they dont miss! Im going to add them to my ship building strategies from now on.

firing rate and distance is very important for a different reason than normal weapons. With attackers like fighters or missles (seekers) you can easily get overwelmed and distroyed. If you only have one type of point defense they will all fire at the first target, reload and all fire at the next target... an so on. mean while number 2 and 4 and 6 missile hit you...

if you use point defense of different range and different reload rates you can get off more shots. I'm fighting an AI race right now that was using a weapon that skips armor and shields. It is however a seeker. One of my ships that has multiple kinds of point defence can hold off a lot of attackers.

SEV, more than a feeling.

Bomblets are only nice if your main weapon needs ordinance.
