Space Empires V FAQs
I see squares in the combat grid and I see that weapons have a range up to, let's say, 90. 90 what?
In a full tech game with patch .25, my ships won't start firing until they are 3 squares away. If 3 squares equals 90 whatevers, then I am not real impressed with the new combat system.

a square is 10 ls normaly and I suspect that your stratergy seting was close range or point blank since optimum for most weapons at max tech is around 100 more for misiles and slighly less for things like ripper beams. 30 ls is fighter weapons range.

Combat Distance also works like this....
If it hits you it's bad if it hits them it is good....and if you can hit them without them hitting you, even better.....
-I love my job

Check you stradgey settings. If you have set to fire at optimal range your ships will get real close. Set them to max range
