Question regarding ship combat in 1.25 Demo

Submitted by Scrubjay on Fri, 2007-02-02 12:51. Space Empires V General

I have done a search, but I was not able to turn up what I was looking for, so I thought I would ask the knowledgeable user base.

I have downloaded and am running the 1.25 demo. I have a fleet of 7 ships in orbit around a planet, all ships have combat weapons. The attack and defense formation is the “Wall” and attack and defense strategy is “Optimal Firing Range”. The fleet has 67,000 supplies and 3137 ordinance. A single enemy ship enters the planet hex and starts combat. My fleet runs away. After combat I have a fleet of 3 ships in one hex, and 4 single ships in another hex, that is my fleet was partially disbanded.

I try different strategies (Short Weapon Range) and my ships continue to run away in the game. I run the same situation in the space combat simulator and my ships attack. My questions are:
1) Is there anyway to set or see the strategies in the Combat Simulator?
2) Any idea why my ships keep running away?

Other combat situations they seem to be working ok, just in this one case. I have had the same situation at the same planet occur on different turns, that is 4 ships attack, and my ships run away, but when I combat ships in other systems, combat seems to operate normally (that is I chase their ship out of the system, which makes sense given the tactical situation), but it could be the bug in reverse. I have had some successful combats, that is where ships fire on each other. Any ideas would be welcome.

Thank you for your time.

It's not a fleet of 3 colony ships and 4 freighters is it?

Are you sure you did not set them to not get hurt?

Good guess, but no. It is a fleet of 7 frigates of various versions (same base type), and there is no apparent correlation. That is some Frigates of the same version are in both stacks. No correlation on damage, as in each stack some ships are damaged, some are not.

The ships have been set at “Optimal Firing Range” and “Short Weapon Range” and they still ran away. I reloaded the game and added more ships to the fleet, now they attack. I may try disbanding the fleet and re-creating the fleet of 7 ships to see if that makes a difference. The odd thing is that when I added more ships to the fleet, on the next combat the original fleet was around the planet (7 ships) and the additional ships (4) were at the combat circle edge and had to fly in. I wonder if I need to disband/reband fleets instead of simply adding ships to the fleet.

Also, is there anyway when you are pressing to have all the ships in a fleet count as one ship. When you have 12 ships in a fleet it is sort of odd to have to press for each ship in the fleet. I would assume the game would figure out if the ship is in a fleet, then all the ships in the fleet would be considered as done.

Thanks for the comments.

I'll assume you mean the next/previous buttons there. In the empire options there is a Next/Previous section. You can tell it to ignore ships in fleets, and then use the next/previous button for fleets to find the fleets quickly.
