How do you attack a planet?

Submitted by Todd77 on Tue, 2007-01-30 16:39. Space Empires V FAQs

Im trying to use my napalm and capital ship missiles to destroy weapons platforms and buildings on a planet, but when I target the planet and attack, my fleet retreats from battle. They have fully supplies and ordnance, and are set to optimal firing range. What am I doing wrong?

I think it may be the treaty I have that I cannot bombard planets. However this treaty is not with the race I am at war with. Apparently it doesnt matter though.

you are correct, sir..
the debate about this in gameplay is ANOTHEER issue -
I'm sure you can find the threads fine on your own-

but ..

when you go to attack a planet does it have a weird nearly-triangular icon that has a big red bar across it?

if so, you are looking at the "no Bombarding" sign greatly feared by massacrers everywhere...

sigh.

read the treaty - did you agree not to bombard planets?
or not to bombard their planets?

Troll? No, Sir, I am a BADGER!

Can you make a distinction to not bombard THEIR planets instead of any planet in general?

That's a great suggestion...

short of getting into the files (ask Kwok or FH)-
I don't know of any. Just amend your treaty.

if they don't like the new treaty...you'll just have to break the old one.

i had a agme where the alliance kept voting me in - without my consent !
( i forgot if they fixed that or not - i think so)

anyway, that was one of the rules of the alliance, so i was pretty frustrated.

Of course, you can always Just go in with troops...

You don't have to rebuild that way.

it was your suggestion, I just wanted to know if it was possible. I dont think it is though, it applies to all planets from all races

Check your treaty (the wording is everything) you may have inadvertantly agreed not to bomb any planet.

No offense; I wasn't being snarky yet, I thought it was better to tell you how to find out for yourself than for me to tell you. yes, the wording of treaties IS all important - Listen to the PeekAtChu - and the treaty you speak of says you agree not to bombard planets, period.

Will you break the treaty if it annoys you that much, kill whatever it is that had you ready to Napalm 'em in the first place, and - no offense, JUST GET IT OVER WITH?

I look forward to reading about this in the after-action forum...

I love the smell of Naplam in the morning... It smells like victory....

Someday this war is going to be over........

Its Pikcachu...not PeelAtchu....(That screen name was taken =P ), and staking is still illegal.

I was just trying to give you credit for making a good suggestion, I know you werent being snarky. I just wish that what you said could happen, that you could agree not to bombard their planets only. I was making all the agreements at the lower part of the selections just so I could get any kind of treaty at all. Its practically impossible to get them to agree to anything reasonable

Unfortunately the treaties are worded to cover everyone... Seems silly, but how else are you going to build an alliance...

well, todd, sir -
i did LATER get snarky-
but you're right, the treaties start out pretty, uh..

look - one of the things I LIKE about the much-maligned SE5 political AI is that when your empire is starting out (goes off score, i believe- i hope it is actually "perceived score" Eye-wink - but thats an intel issue/thread, altogether different) --
the other empires aren't terribly impressed by you.

uh.. should they be?

once you start, what did pokemon say, crushing empires like the bugs they are, things quickly change.
YOU will be approached for treaties, at far more favorable terms...

i WOULD like if the treaties were in steps of
ok to bombard
won't bombard YOU
won't bombard at all

and perhaps you can call that a suggestion and email it to MM.

But until then, i'm just going to have to BE snarky, and tell you,

If the Treaty annoys Thee,
Pluck Thyself Out (of it)...

smack 'em around, and if the won't-give-a-reasonable-treaty empire doesn't like that, smack THEM around, too - at 12am while having a glass of tea or something..

THEN you can try all those nifty tricks

which, no offense, are more fun to learn yourself than to hear from us -

...and write us about it in the after-action report.

i for one am ready for you to invade or bomb the planet already ;)

EDIT:
but first give the AI AutoCannons so they have a Fighting Chance

...you knew i'd say that...

Actually I find after I bomb them back to swinging with clubs the AI tends to refuse even the most giving of treaties. Just for kicks i gave them 3 planets, tons of supplies and 12 ships. They said I needed to learn some respect, so I blew up there sun and all there planets.

Respect that..

all the AI, or just the race that probably hates you by now?

Your point is made, though, and i see it with their refusal to EVER surrender (i hear they do in IRM, have NOT seen it myself.)... (btw: i only recently finally saw the "bloodthirsty" mood and thought it was an IRM fix.)

but i have noticed, as you accumulate , i guess score, the AI's as a whole react to you MUCH differently. That was what was killing me about the stupid alliance bug- since i was so far ahead of the rest of the ai empires, they kept voting me into their annoying alliance agaisnt my will... to steal my tech and run my warp-point blockades.

Last but not least,
for any new players with the misfortune to be reading this thread?...

....we have established that at about 12am, this one likes to kick puppies.
most be that long day of Ash makin' ya fight..
in the ball, outta the ball...
i guess after a day of that i'd be ready to kick puppies, too.
