Point Defense Weapons

pikcachu20's picture
Submitted by pikcachu20 on Tue, 2007-01-30 11:41. Space Empires V FAQs

I thought I read about this somewhere, so if this is a repost of an old topic please forgive me.

I have noticed that the multiple PDW do not target multiple fighters. They all concentrate on one fighter until it is destroyed. I built a ship with just PDW to test this in the simulator against multiple fighters (think WWII AA Cruisers. Needless to say this didn't work as I intended. Any thoughts or suggestions?

the IRM has multi targeting code which allows the engagement of five and ten targets but in stock the only way to do this is to layer the ranges as ships will shoot the optimum target and long range PD like flack missiles will engage targets beyond the range of the cannon even so it doesnt work all that well and spreading your PD across the fleet seems to be more effective

ginger, tho' a VERY evil kitty, has a point:

I had a flaship/pd escort repair ship that my fleets built around.

sounds god in theory, the aegis cruiser and it's escorts?

in practice, the bomblet missiles would shoot at satellites and ignore the ship-hungry missiles streaking our way...
it was a mess, forcing me to break formnation to make it work anything like intended - which wouldn't be an option in, say, simultaneous, or for the AI.

Has Multiplex Tracking been confirmed definitively though? It's listed as not in use in the modding document, although it's possible legacy code from SE:IV in SE:V might be in play.

I cant confirm that its working but it seems to be from experience in that in IRM fleets ships will engage multiple targets but seldom as many as five or ten. Without it the whole fleet seems to target one ship regardless of range considerations the ones out of range just chasing continually I have seen ships defiantly shoot at two targets though it would seem they fire all of weapon type one at target A and all of weapon type two at target B if its a better choice by whatever means the AI picks targets. Ships in pursuit of ships which are out of range will quickly change to other targets if they come in range I have seen ships ignore these targets in stock before now.

I think it works but not as well as it might

Edit Badger I did but it was funnier to pretend I had not I am an EVIL ginger after all

Oh and by the way it was supposed to be Point Defense Weapons (LOL).. So it a stock game it would be better to use a defense in depth concept. Long range PD to short range. I hope one day that gets fixed. It would make for an excelent concept.

While that is good for the AI. It still doesn't address multi targeting by the PD Weapons for the player. If the Navys Cruiser fleet could only fire at one target at a time, we would have no Carriers. I would like to have it work for my ships. While I build multi-purpose ships there are times when a specialist is needed. PDW ships are good for that. 30 PDW on one ship should be able to handle a carrier wing. It would definately add to the game play. Right now two carriers with a full fighter wing will decimate almost everything IMO. (is there a way i can mod this? I'm new to modding and am looking for a way to contribute back to the community)

try Haven's multiplex tracking trick... don't know if it works or no, but i expect it does.

while yr at it, tyr those fighters against haven's AC
uh , well, that is..
the "all DUC are autocannon" (ahem)..
If, like me, you got used to an AI not fighting back...

MultiPlex Tracking research?

Submitted by Badger on Thu, 2007-02-01 21:34.

I was thinking that old starfire-style "multiplex tracking" never WAS much good until fighters came out -
and then you fired more or less at the whole group as one target...

But its certainly a great idea, ESPECIALLY with fighters and satellites...

So..
Is it possible or feasible to have that as an ability that is "enabled" by research - particularly (nods to Fallen Haven)
point defense research?

if not, would it be feasible to give ONLY the PD weapons - true PD weapons - multiplex? it could be i suppose afeature only those weapons have.

i guess it would help if we determined once and for all if FH's Multiples fix works, rather than me assuming it does..

if nothing else, that would retain balance of DEDICATED PD in the sense of them having ANOTHER advantage over non-specialized weaponry like AutoCannons...
