I have planetary weapons but how do you use them? |
I have a ship equipped with planetary napalm. How do I use it? I cant seem to bombard a planet from the main screen, I couldnt find any button that does that. Nor could I bombard a planet from the tactical ship to planet combat screen. The ship simply retreats from the attack and never fires.
Also, how do I invade planets? I have a freighter with a troop vehicle. Do I launch the troop ship while the freighter is on the planet sector?

Also remember another quirk of the game. If you drop troops on the planet...even if the crew is killed by the troop pod remains intact...you cannot attack the planet. If if you make the ship fire no damage will accrue. You will have to reengage with more troops or if you have included self-destruct on the troop you can activate that and then be able to attack with weapons.

You may just want to land troops and take the planet intact. Use the icon that looks like troops charging (toward the bottom) to invade the planet. I prefer to take planets intact to get access to other techs.

even if you cant colonise a world you can conquer it and can the benefits of having a colony on a gas giant that you other wise could not have yet and one with a selection of facilities to boot .
Planetary bombardment except to clear defences is a bit of a waste and parking lot bombing a world even if you do decolonise it is a total waste

basically yes which is why you build specialist assault transports max out armour and as many shields as possible and escort them in with ships to distract the planets weapons fire
Damn it my Assault transports generally have a good level of PD and some can put up a fight handy for worlds protected by satellites individual frigates

Send in the Space Marines and believe in a higher power. I prefer to believe in Naplam and Melson Blasters to clear the way.

don't suggest alternatives when someone is asking how to do something, if he is asking how to bomb a planet, TELL HIM HOW TO DO IT!

no, not really, i target it both by right clicking and going through the attack commands and my bombardment ships(i make single purpose ships) don't even fire anything, no ammo used

Do the ships even try to move in range for bombardment? If not it probably is a problem with the strategy you set for your bombing ship. For example, if under target type "Planet with Colony" you have it on "Do Not Engage" then it doesn't matter how many times you target the planet, nothing will fire. You have to check the details of the strategy you're using under "Empire Option" which is one of the buttons on the top toolbar in the main galaxy screen.
I personally, I don't bother with Napalm since I always capture populated planets and wipe out small ones with missiles. Missiles have much better range than napalm.

You may need to check to see what strategy you assigned to the vessel with the napalm. Make sure it is the correct strategy for attack not capture.
As for troops, if you did not assign it a strategy to capture the planet there is a button on the menu that is for drop troops. Ensure you deselect the planet as a weapons firing target...button with a red circle with a slash through it. Then choose the button to drop troops...I think it has a soldier on it and I believe you right click the planet. You should then see the ship approach and launch a troop pod. At that point space combat ends and on the next turn you will get the ground combat screen.
