No bug has been fixed in over a month?

Submitted by _Kraft on Wed, 2007-01-24 16:00.
Project:Space Empires V
Version:1.20
Component:Code
Category:support
Priority:normal
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:active

Description

I'm questioning why this site exists if we are taking our time to report problems found (both minor and major) and nothing has been fixed in over a month?

Here is the last fixed bug:
"Improving construction queues. closed normal feature 5.1.20 4 weeks 3 days cordas "

A complicated bug/design flaw could take a while to fix, and that is a given, but many things reported (though I'm not familiar with the maintainability/architecture of this baseline) seem minor and they should have at least one of those minor bugs fixed given the number of people assigned to them. I know Aaron wrote the game and I'm assuming those other people assigned to the bugs are SW engineers (god we all hope)

OR is it possible that the web site is just not publishing these types of updates properly? As someone who greatly enjoys the game (and I speak for many) I would love to know the status/progress (good or bad) of this baseline?
Love the Game!!!

There's not really any active updating of the issues database with each patch anymore. It doesn't mean that many of the bugs aren't being addressed (which you can see in the posted changelogs in the general forum), but that no one is following up in the issues database and marking them fixed etc.

Captain Kwok,
I'm glad to hear they are being addressed (I did notice your wording didn't claim any are fixed). Since we can't use the bug database to track progress (since it's not being updated/maintained) it makes me question it's even being looked at. After all, if we took the time to report a bug via a mechanism SEV provided, it should be kept current as to it's status (Otherwise you get repeat issues, and confusion). If the database is not being used for development debug purposes, it should be removed. Are there any new changes in the change log going to be put into new patch? I would be happy if there was only a few minor fixes.
I love the game and I would love to see it work as it was intended.

I understand that such maintenance would require inside knowledge of the inner working of SE5. In terms of site mechanics, however, my question is whether there is anything missing or lacking for such activity to be instituted?

I have been debating closing the SE5 "Beta forums", but have held off due, for some reason or another, to the fact that they're still active..!

The reason I implemented this issue tracking section was because there was no formal method by which users could post bugs in a structured format. The bulky murky soup of information that regular "forums" provide, I think we can all agree, does not lend itself well to software development. Some refer to forums as having a low signal-to-noise ratio.

This section may not have been updated on a regular basis, but its utility at least offers the possibility for users to post up their findings for others to comment on.. even if the result is increased awareness.

Also, for those users who wish to contribute their own mods, the issue tracking can be used for that development as well.

I agree with the potential usefulness of the issue reporting for the game and mods, it's just too bad it doesn't have more visibility in terms of the patch development process, which would probably solve the problem of it being updated etc.

I think the visibility (or lack thereof) is partly if not entirely due to the fact that the core testing discussions still tend to occurr on our aforementioned Beta forums.. but why are they still active? is there anything found there that can't be found here?

It doesn't even got much to do with the other beta forums or anything like that, as Aaron has mentioned before it's really the e-mailed bugs that tend to force their way to the top of the bug fix pile. Also, much of core discussion takes place via e-mail correspondence as well since Aaron doesn't participate much in forum discussion. Sticking out tongue

I'm also afraid to break it to you that many still much prefer the UBB board (which really isn't all that active as well) over Dupal(?) and that's why you've seen little migration from the testers to the private beta forums here.

I do like the automatic subject field addition though. Sticking out tongue

The tracking module allows emails to be sent when certain events are recorded, such as bug reports. It has various levels of configurability. That solves that problem.

As for the e-mail correspondence, there is another module that merges forum and email discussions.

Don't worry Captain, you're not breaking anything to me. If anything you're providing valuable insight as to what needs to be done to help migrate what remains from the older UBB into a more evolved, integrated platform.

You say you feel people still "prefer" UBB.. what about it? Its look? Its features? The performance? What about UBB really makes this particular installation that unattractive? If we really want to make some headway here, these are the question that will need answering. Not just for the patches, but for people to contribute their own works. Also Space Empires 6.

I was wondering if anyone had noticed! I may not post a lot, but believe me SpaceEmpires5.com is always on the top of my list.

I'm fine with the Drupal board as evidenced by my post count - it's just some of my colleagues like the "standard" display /features of UBB boards... they'd have to post about it I guess. Anyhow for me it's just little things like when you edit your post it marks it as new and moves it down to the end of the thread etc., perhaps it should just be marked edited. Also a mark all read button would be nice.

I wonder if the e-mail functions here can force Aaron to reply faster or in more detail? Sticking out tongue

Indeed Kwok you've been very faithful to the Space Empires franchise, and this board is no exception. Your feedback is always welcome and respected.

It's never easy for communities to simply uproot for a massive transition, so I can also understand some unspoken hesitation when shifting users around. Admittedly there were even a few hair-raising moments here when we first launched.

I understand the Space Empires community to be a highly technical one, also showing a particular inclination for political behaviour. Rightfuly so in many ways, I'd say, if we firmly believe SE is far and above the best 4X title of its kind.

In that light, I hoped to provide past, present, and future Space Empires fans as solid an online resource as possible -- but also steering clear of becoming outright competition. I get the impression, though, that that delicate political balance may perhaps have been 'adjusted' slightly by the introduction of this site.

I kept thinking it's the features, or parhaps layout that might need tweaking, but the deeper I dig the more I think it might be something else...?

You know stuff does get fixed eventually - as there are at least 3 patrch releases so far: 1.08, 1.13 and 1.20 and maybe others I missed. It'll get fixed eventually.

It's a pity, SE-IV was really good. SE-IV made me buy SE-V. But SE-V made me not buy SE-VI. 1.20 still isn't working right so this is my last post here, cya all.
