Treaties (non-aggression pact)???

Submitted by Rendell on Wed, 2007-01-24 05:26. Space Empires V FAQs

I played SEIV a lot, but just started my first game of SEV and have a question on treaties. I had a couple races offer me treaties and naturally accepted figuring it is always better to destroy the races you are already fighting first. The problem is one of them had a non-aggression clause which sounded innocent enough, but I found out it prevented me from making any new colonies in an unoccupied sector. I tried asking them to modify the treaty, waited a turn and they declined. I demanded they modify the treaty waited a turn and they declined. I told them I was cancelling the treaty and I still couldn’t colonize so had to wait a turn. Before my next turn they grabbed the two good planets in that sector that had my colony ships parked on top of them booting my colony ships over a hex and left me with one tiny planet that had to be domed!

Is this a “feature” or is it by design? Isn’t there any way to break a treaty without waiting for the other empire to reply or to ignore a treaty condition with the possibility of hurting relations? Furthermore I don’t really understand the three choices under the non-aggression clause. It seems like all three prevent you from colonizing in a non-occupied sector which hardly seems aggressive.

Never in SEV judge had a treaty by its title always read it before agreeing to it. This is especially the case if you have played SEIV as it’s easy to assume that all treaties offered are an unmitigated good.

Thanks. I will be careful in the future. “Non-aggression” sounded like a good thing. I didn’t realize it meant I couldn’t expand even in the other direction!!!

YEAH, READ THE TREATY..

Most offers include something you just can't abide with. Like "No bombarding planets" or "Can't conduct research." It's very hard to kill those bug-eyed slimy aliens (everyone knows scales are better) if YOU can't throw rocks at them. And just because your treaty says you can't throw rocks doesn't mean they can't throw them.

Death, destruction, mayhem and confusion. Another perfect day.

Yeah, I’m starting to see that. They seem to love to choose migrate to your planets, but won’t let you migrate to theirs. I guess I was used to SEIV were as many treaties as possible with the races you weren’t fighting was a good thing. I like all the options on the treaties in SEV, but it does seem like it is impossible to get another race to accept one that is balanced.

I have had some computer empires that accepted my one sided treaties but I didn't get to play long enough to see how they worked out.

you can usually negotiate treaties, if hte AI offers you one you don't like, send a reply with an edited version of the treaty, if you don;t change it that much they usually except, but sometimes it takes a few goes!

Unless they really don't like you. Then you could offer them the moon and stars, and they will still say you need to learn some respect.

And sometimes, no matter who's moon and stars you offer, they'll not accept. I have a tough time getting the AI to accept offers, even when I offer up something that will hinder me but benefit the AI.

The question still remians, " Why does the AI never really accept a decent proposal?"

The answer to which seems to be that the AI dosent know what a good offer is. Or just turns you down because its you thats making the offer

I think it's just me.... But if I have a fleet of 100 ships hovering near by and the enemy has a sat. I think I could offer anything with the word peasce in it and the AI should jump all over it..

I agree entirly but the AI as it comes seems to have an irrationaly stuborn, to the point of racial suicide, streak. It can be Moded to be more resonable and to take note of relative scores somthing which Both Fallen Haven and Captian Kwock have changed in their respective Mods though I have not played enough of the BM to see if an AI will surender however.

Meh, i tried many, many times to make (very good) treaties with the AI, i usually wait for them to like me more (aimable maybe.. i rarely see them like me more than that level)and they always refuse. Always. I never received an offer for a treaty yet, and the AI always refuses all and any gift i send them (such as new planetary colonisation techs, or loads of ressources.)

I even tried a treaty that would cripple me plus give us a lot of bonuses, and they refused.

Also, is it even possible to make deals with neutrals? They are just there as fodder apparently.

Like I said earlier in this thread, I offered them the moon and stars (literally) and they refused.

Simple solution - Just kill them all.

Hey, i managed to do something with the AI a few minutes ago.
I played a "nomad" race (with only one planet, because it is a necesity to be able to contact other races.. for some reason.)
I met one neutral race in a far-away corner of the universe, and i felt i should give them stuff so when "true" AI arrives, that neutral will kick them out.
So i traded all my techs in exchange for 1000 mineral. I expected a big "No, blah blah blah". The standard AI reaction to everything.
..But they accepted! Woa!
But it didnt help my standing with them at all. They refused everything else i asked them, like small 5% trade treaties, or big treaties were i give them everything possible for no cost to them, and they refuse.

Arg, the AI is SO frustrating.

Neutrals are minor AI empires which never expand outside their home systems as opposed to the major ones which can expand freely and are meant to provide the other protagonists in the game.

The key thing about treaties in SEV is that until you make several treaties and play several games, you probably won't know what the treaty does. *sigh* Yeah, I'm also a victim of the "non-aggression" treaty preventing me from colonizing an empty system. At least this treaty isn't as bad as the "No Intel" treaty option that means not only can you not conduct Intel operations against the other empire in the treaty, you also can't conduct Intel operations AT ALL. *REALLY BIG SIGH*

Just so you know, the treaty name does NOT do anything! Its fluff, and the stock AI is a bit random in how it chooses names. Read the actual treaty clauses before you sign..
