Attacking planets

Submitted by KnightFire on Fri, 2007-01-12 13:55. Space Empires V General

How do I get my ships to attack enemy planets?
They are equiped with planetry napalm and have some ordinance, but just fly off the map during combat without engaging.

Hi,
I set them to use a strategy that has engage facilities and bases at medium range, but they still all just leave the map. Is there anything else I need to set?

move 'planets with colony' to the top of the list in the target types list.
set 'target types' as one of the target priority order list.

see if that works.

One other thing that causes you to not bomb planets.

Check your treaties. If ONE has "your empire" can not bombard planets, this means you can't bombard ANY planets, even enemies who ARE bombarding yours.

Death, destruction, mayhem and confusion. Another perfect day.

If your Ship is in an fleet, make sure it uses the right tactics
If you want to capture a Planet, the fleet must be ordered to "capture planet"

Does the planet you're

Submitted by Dr Strangelove on Sun, 2007-01-14 09:54.

Does the planet you're attacking have any population left? I've had problems with the enemy sometimes removing population from a planet, or perhaps my fleet accidently firing a few rounds into a planet during combat, eliminating the population. If there is no population on the planet your ships won't fire on it even though there are enemy facilities on it and it shows up on the map as still possessed by the enemy. the problem is that within a few seconds of initiating combat the computer will determine that combat is over and will terminate the fight. You won't be able to colonize the planet either. The way I work around this is that I try to bring my troop ships in close, but behind my fleet's front line before finishing off the enemy fleet and planetary defences. I then keep initiating combat, directing my troop ship to drop ships. If the planet is depopulated the troop ship will only be able to move a few squares before combat shuts down, but if I keep ordering combat eventually it gets close to the planet and drops its troops.

This occured in a demo game. Has anyone had the same problem with the full game? Another problem I had with the demo is that I could fight only one ground combat per turn. Is this true of the full game too?
