I'm 31 soon to be 32.
I've been playing games since I got a copy of Star Flight on my Dad's PC...if I remember right it was a 286 and had a speed of 6Hz. He had to buy another PC as he couldn't get me off his.

24, playing since SE2 (around 1997, 8th grade). Been playing computer games in general since kindergarten (Kings Quest III and Thexder).

26, playing since age 13
My first space 4x game was VGA Planets version 3, to which I was introduced by members of a local BBS. I had to dial in on my 2400 baud modem to upload my turns 3x per week.
Fortunately, 4x games have improved the user experience a bit since then.
Same
I just recoverd from the same problem but I just asked the site to reset my account and send me a link to my email.

Just turned 51. Played
Just turned 51. Played Stars!, missed SE1 but been here ever since. I actually played PONG in bars while trying to hit on girls.
Death, destruction, mayhem and confusion. Another perfect day.
Almost 44
43 almost 44 and playing SE from the early days of Se III.
Wow
You'd expect more people around the age of 15 - 18 years but I guess this kind of game is for the more "Matured" players..
Okay let's just face it. We're getting old..

Death, destruction, mayhem and confusion. Another perfect day.
I'm not suprised
25 here. I am not surprised by the ages of the people here. The younger generation of gamers just sees guns and cutting edge graphics when judging a new game. Most of us however, were probably playing video games in the 80's and remember what life was like playing Asteroids and Super Mario Bros.
26... playing since 12
I'm 26 and finishing up my PhD right now. I've been playing 4X ever since Master of Orion I or perhaps even Star Control I (if that could be defined as 4X). I played Stars as well... I first got into space empires when I got a SE3 demo, and I was immediately hooked.

The goggles... they do nothing!
I must be the oldest
I know you're looking for 20 year olds that play this game, but the mix is interesting and seems to cover the whole range. I must be the oldest to play this, I'm 52. I grew up gamimg on a VIC 20 and never quit. Yes, I remember when Pong and Tanks came out.

Turn 55 in 28 days. Bought
Turn 55 in 28 days.
Bought Intellivision for $250 when it 1st came out.
Have played Avalon Hill Board games long before that. Military days of the early 70's.
So yeah Jagzeplin I'm one of those "old" ppl that play TBS.

I'm 54. My first game (not counting games of Pong or Pacman played on commercial machines) was Starflight.
Ahhh, Yes!
Ahh, yes!
Spent MANY hours mining, searching for Endurim and locating the Black Eggs.
I still have my original SF1 and SF2 disks, maps and notes. And it's still fun to play once in a while. The best emulator I found for it is DOSBOX.

50
Yeah Starflight was great I think I played that on an Apple II with 48k of RAM. The potatoe race was funny and sometimes dangerous.
And Star Control I - III. Hmmm can't find SC I. There was a silicon race (?) supposedly created by an ancient race and no-one knew their purpose...

You know, I liked Starflight
You know, I liked Starflight so much that I raced to buy Starflight 2 when it came out. I was unfortunate though, I bought one of the copies of the game which lacked the ability to save the game, so I never finished it. A few years ago I found a copy on the internet. Since I had a Pentium III at the time my machine was too fast for it. I installed a program to slow my computer's CPU down, but apparently it interfered with some of my kids' games, so I never finished. The kids have their own computer now, but even with DOS Box my P5 is so much faster than the systems that Starflight was designed to run on I don't think it would work. I'm not sure if Mo-Slo will work on an XP system. Anyway, I've gotten spoiled by better graphics. It's hard to get into something with such blocky graphics.

I'm a 36 year old Dentist. I was playing SE III demo, lost track of SE until SE IV gold, got hooked and now happily playing SEV! I remember back when I was a kid playing Carwars with little flat paper cars. My first computer was a sinclair, it had an expansion module so that it had an amaizing 16K of memory!
SEV, more than a feeling.
41 yr. old with an original Commodore 64
That's what I played Starflight on and I still have the Commodore 64, tape drive, and 1541 external floppy drive in my basement. Ah, the memories.
Before the computer I was an avid D&D player and Risk was my board game of choice. 4x games have been my addiction for over 20 years now.
50 YO computer tech
I cut my teeth on Kingmaker, Squad Leader, Europa, Star Fleet Battles, AdnD and such. So turn based, strategy computer games is a natural progression. I loved Civilization and Colonization. These things will cause the heat death of the civilized worlds.
Very Similar Here (smile)
And I still have my TI99-4A along with cassett recorder/player and several tapes all boxed up together.
My oldest son, who was about 8 at the time, and I spent many hours playing together and typing in programs that we picked up in various places. Yes indeed - very good memories!
Maybe having a dim moment but
exactly what is a "4X" game? I've been gaming since 79 and haven't heard the term until the last year.

4X = Explore, Expand,
4X = Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate - basically a turn-based strategic conquest game, along the lines of Space Empires, Master of Orion, Civilization, Dominions, and a host of others.

42 -- wasn't that the meaning of life or something like that?
SEV, more than a feeling.

Ahem! The term is "older" - not just "old."
(As you will discover in about 20 more years. Heh-heh-heh!
I think one of the attractions of this type of game for older folks is that it actually involves some stragety and requires thinking - as opposed to many games that are just 'shoot-em-up' which take no real planning.
I already feel old :P
(As you will discover in about 20 more years. Heh-heh-heh!
Well, i should have worded it that way
.
I always been attracted to that kind of games, never liked the twitchy gaming that require only reflexes to play. I find it sad that most "strategy" games are at best management games that require more multi-tasking skills than brain. And AI wise most games are brain dead, or have very simplistic routines that most gamers can figure out.
I like Se5 because, while incomplete, it has the potential to blow away all other 4x games out there. My mod show promise also, i have reports that my AI is quite good and do manage to provide some challenge. The flexibility of this engine also allowed me to implement a lot of features only the developpers could have come out with if it was a regular game. It is also cool that Se5 don't attract the bad gamer that cheat or complain all the time...
Oh and for thoses that don't know, my mod is "Inter-Related Conversion".

I'm 22, playing games since
I'm 22, playing games since 1989. I like to whipe out civilizations and manipulate things, and for this SE attracted me from around SEIII Demo.
Youngest
Wow...I think im the youngest to reply to this topic so far. Im just about to turn 20...no job, still in college studying networking. Been playing 4x games since playing an SE3 Demo. I admit, I also like the FPS reflex type games, and the Strat games. But I love 4x and TBS games as well. Damn, I feel like, im playing an old person game now lol
. No offense to those older people.

32 myself, and most of my
32 myself, and most of my SEV is played mulitplayer with myself and my 63yr old father.
I'd have to class Heroes as 4X myself, and a fun one too. They might have gone a wee bit overboard on the new one, but it's still good.

28 here.
I usually blame Civilization for my 4X addiction. I would literally spend entire Saturdays playing from when I woke up to when I went to bed. Then I got a hold of Master of Orion I, and it took Civ's place.
I still play MOO2 from time to time.
Started Space Empires with SE3. Love SE4, and SE5 has enough potential to be just as great IMHO.
Youngest Yet!
I'm 18. I played since the Space Empires 2 demo. I can't remember when that was but it was probably 8-10 years ago, right? I wonder if anyone's going to beat me.

And more power to you... Or at you. Whatever.
well, i think i speak for many of us in saying that the first game like this i played was the NON-computer tabletop game, Starfire Empires
not to mention the empires version of Star Fleet Battles
but if you've read about AAron, i got that he was a SE fan too...
Not that it wasnt obvious.
Anyway, we were playing that ... it came out i guess when we were 13? or so?
So i would say you started younger-
i would have had i the exposure. I started D&D at 8...
Its been a slide into gamng-geek debauchery ever since!
Welcome to, i hope, Good Company, "Youngster!"
Anyone who wants power; by definition, cannot be trusted with it...
Re: any1 my age play this
First off, I’m jealous of all of you who say you played since 8 or 10. I’m one of those old guys so there weren’t any kind of PCs then. . My first computer game was Rogue running on my universities VAX. 11/780.
Back to the original post, I am surprised you played Stars if you are only 20. That is still one of the best 4x games and was way ahead of its time. Amazing since I think it was pretty much a one man show. I hate that they never found anyone to fund the sequel, Stars Supernova.

Re: any1 my age play this
I'll turn 44 yo in 2 months , seems like i'm the oldest here playin the game lol
Re: any1 my age play this
I've got a birthday coming up very shortly - I'll be 64.

"Starflight", yes! -- as well as "Zork" ("You are in a cave. It is dark. A tunnel heads north. A ladder goes up...") and the F-16 simulator. First played computer games on my university's computer in between writing FORTRAN programmes on punch cards. I was late buying my own computer; first one I owned was an Atari 520ST (mainframe, floppy drive and keyboard all-in-one). First game that got me hooked was "Dungeon Master", pulled so many all-nighters playing that I almost lost my job. Loved the old Simulations Canada text-based wargames (came with a plastic-coated gridmap and grease pencils), "Red Storm Rising", and "Empire". Used to spend days creating maps for "Empire Deluxe"... still have the original boxed floppy disk set. I still play "Stars!" now and then. Ahh, great games, makes me nostaligic...

Re: any1 my age play this
I've got a birthday coming up very shortly - I'll be 64. :)Cool Cosmic Marvel ..then i'm the second oldest then..lol...

Re: any1 my age play this
Hmmm now I see a 55 and 51 here too , seems like now i am in fifth place..lol..

38: Publishing
I can remember getting access to a mainframe when I was kid to play Star Trek - a sort of turn based, ASCII game. I also had Zork, Leather Goddess of Phobos and whatnot when we finally got a PC in the house. Before that, I played a lot of Avalon Hill games.
I played Stars! before finding SEIII and then I pretty much bought SEIV and SEV the moment they were available.
I play a lot of different things too; BF2, SimCity and NWN, but I always come back to SE.

Re: 38
what about Starfire/ starfire empires?
Our young marine WAS right, to some degree - bunch of crusty old wargamers in this bunch...

Heh-heh-heh! And as I see from your next post, you just discovered some others.
This type of game seems to appeal to us older folks because it actually involves - and requires - some thinking.
As opposed to the shoot-'em-up, quickest guy on the mouse click wins sort of stuff. Sure, there's a place for that but it gets pretty boring after a little while. And that's one of the reasons I liked games like the original Zelda on the NES. You actually had to figure out puzzles and things as opposed to all the simple leaping and jumping in many other games.

Re: any1 my age play this
It's exactly that Cosmic Marvel..
, Older folks prefer playing games that needs some thinking, i love playing wargames and simulation games ,I'm not into Xbox playstations and Nintendo stuff cause 99 % of the games are shoot and die games , if i was a teen i would prolly like those games (all we had at the time was intellivision and atari consoles with games that sucked) ,but not anymore , i suppose that when today's teen will reach their 40's or 60's they will be the same too...
and that thread was a damn good idea Cosmic Marvel..

Thanks, Boromeo, it's good to see someone agrees that games involving stratagey and planning are much more fun than simple shoot-and-die.
And I'm sure you're right about today's kids as they get a little older - they'll learn the difference, too, as they go along.
I haven't started many threads but I'm not sure which one it is that you like. Care to tell an older guy whose memory usually doesn't fade but sometimes DOES?

Re: any1 my age play this
hmm not sure to understand Cosmic Marvel , sorry my english sux sometimes (Ima French Canadian)
Do u eman whcih games i like the most ? or is it which threads i like the most ?..(confused)..lol..

No problem.
And it's good thing I don't have to write in French - my French is horrible!
I was asking about this statement: "and that thread was a damn good idea Cosmic Marvel..:)"
Just wondering which thread that was?

Re: any1 my age play this
it was yours.lol..
..It's ok for french , there's no shame to have , cause french is a lot harder to learn , My girlfriends is american , she helps me a lot with my english , taht helps ..
Re: any1 my age play this
I'll be 60 in Oct. Thought I would be the oldest, but noted a couple or real old timers slipped in there.

Hi, Folgra,
Yep, there's a few of us here - surprizing, isn't it?
And since today's the 3rd, I'm only 5 days away from 64.
