My first space 4x game was VGA Planets version 3, to which I was introduced by members of a local BBS. I had to dial in on my 2400 baud modem to upload my turns 3x per week.

Fortunately, 4x games have improved the user experience a bit since then.

25 here. I am not surprised by the ages of the people here. The younger generation of gamers just sees guns and cutting edge graphics when judging a new game. Most of us however, were probably playing video games in the 80's and remember what life was like playing Asteroids and Super Mario Bros.

You know, I liked Starflight

Submitted by Dr Strangelove on Sun, 2007-01-14 18:50.

You know, I liked Starflight so much that I raced to buy Starflight 2 when it came out. I was unfortunate though, I bought one of the copies of the game which lacked the ability to save the game, so I never finished it. A few years ago I found a copy on the internet. Since I had a Pentium III at the time my machine was too fast for it. I installed a program to slow my computer's CPU down, but apparently it interfered with some of my kids' games, so I never finished. The kids have their own computer now, but even with DOS Box my P5 is so much faster than the systems that Starflight was designed to run on I don't think it would work. I'm not sure if Mo-Slo will work on an XP system. Anyway, I've gotten spoiled by better graphics. It's hard to get into something with such blocky graphics.

Ahem! The term is "older" - not just "old." Eye-wink (As you will discover in about 20 more years. Heh-heh-heh!

I think one of the attractions of this type of game for older folks is that it actually involves some stragety and requires thinking - as opposed to many games that are just 'shoot-em-up' which take no real planning.

I always been attracted to that kind of games, never liked the twitchy gaming that require only reflexes to play. I find it sad that most "strategy" games are at best management games that require more multi-tasking skills than brain. And AI wise most games are brain dead, or have very simplistic routines that most gamers can figure out.

I like Se5 because, while incomplete, it has the potential to blow away all other 4x games out there. My mod show promise also, i have reports that my AI is quite good and do manage to provide some challenge. The flexibility of this engine also allowed me to implement a lot of features only the developpers could have come out with if it was a regular game. It is also cool that Se5 don't attract the bad gamer that cheat or complain all the time...

Oh and for thoses that don't know, my mod is "Inter-Related Conversion".

First off, I’m jealous of all of you who say you played since 8 or 10. I’m one of those old guys so there weren’t any kind of PCs then. . My first computer game was Rogue running on my universities VAX. 11/780.

Back to the original post, I am surprised you played Stars if you are only 20. That is still one of the best 4x games and was way ahead of its time. Amazing since I think it was pretty much a one man show. I hate that they never found anyone to fund the sequel, Stars Supernova.

"Starflight", yes! -- as well as "Zork" ("You are in a cave. It is dark. A tunnel heads north. A ladder goes up...") and the F-16 simulator. First played computer games on my university's computer in between writing FORTRAN programmes on punch cards. I was late buying my own computer; first one I owned was an Atari 520ST (mainframe, floppy drive and keyboard all-in-one). First game that got me hooked was "Dungeon Master", pulled so many all-nighters playing that I almost lost my job. Loved the old Simulations Canada text-based wargames (came with a plastic-coated gridmap and grease pencils), "Red Storm Rising", and "Empire". Used to spend days creating maps for "Empire Deluxe"... still have the original boxed floppy disk set. I still play "Stars!" now and then. Ahh, great games, makes me nostaligic...

38: Publishing

I can remember getting access to a mainframe when I was kid to play Star Trek - a sort of turn based, ASCII game. I also had Zork, Leather Goddess of Phobos and whatnot when we finally got a PC in the house. Before that, I played a lot of Avalon Hill games.

I played Stars! before finding SEIII and then I pretty much bought SEIV and SEV the moment they were available.

I play a lot of different things too; BF2, SimCity and NWN, but I always come back to SE.

Heh-heh-heh! And as I see from your next post, you just discovered some others. Eye-wink

This type of game seems to appeal to us older folks because it actually involves - and requires - some thinking. Eye-wink As opposed to the shoot-'em-up, quickest guy on the mouse click wins sort of stuff. Sure, there's a place for that but it gets pretty boring after a little while. And that's one of the reasons I liked games like the original Zelda on the NES. You actually had to figure out puzzles and things as opposed to all the simple leaping and jumping in many other games.

It's exactly that Cosmic Marvel..Smiling, Older folks prefer playing games that needs some thinking, i love playing wargames and simulation games ,I'm not into Xbox playstations and Nintendo stuff cause 99 % of the games are shoot and die games , if i was a teen i would prolly like those games (all we had at the time was intellivision and atari consoles with games that sucked) ,but not anymore , i suppose that when today's teen will reach their 40's or 60's they will be the same too...

and that thread was a damn good idea Cosmic Marvel..Smiling

Thanks, Boromeo, it's good to see someone agrees that games involving stratagey and planning are much more fun than simple shoot-and-die. Smiling And I'm sure you're right about today's kids as they get a little older - they'll learn the difference, too, as they go along.

I haven't started many threads but I'm not sure which one it is that you like. Care to tell an older guy whose memory usually doesn't fade but sometimes DOES? Eye-wink

No problem. Smiling And it's good thing I don't have to write in French - my French is horrible!

I was asking about this statement: "and that thread was a damn good idea Cosmic Marvel..:)"

Just wondering which thread that was? Smiling
