Basic Map/Diplomacy Questions

Submitted by JeffGeorge on Tue, 2007-01-09 20:59. Space Empires V General

First of all, I am finding this game EXTREMELY unfun compared to Space Empires IV. It just seems that when I'm playing it I'd rather be playing SE IV, because at least I know what's going on.

Is the mini map of any use? How do I tell where my colonies are, where the enemy colonies are, etc.? Why do my opponents keep asking me for various sorts of assistance, and what am I giving them if I agree?

Will I ever reach a point where I know what this game is doing, or is it a matter of just keep clicking End Turn and hope that the game is over soon? In SE IV I could click a couple of buttons and see everyone's borders. In this game the mini map tells me just a little more than nothing, and that's being generous.

Where are my enemies????

The minimap in it's reduced

Submitted by Nevyn on Wed, 2007-01-10 05:46.

The minimap in it's reduced form doesn't do anything but when you expand it it can be set to show a lot more information.

It could do with some more functionality I quite agree, but in it's expanded form it can show quite a bit of usefull information.

Clarify?

Regarding the mini map (I'm not at home with the game right now though I could Steam it here at work, hmmmmmm), if I expand it can it show me my systems and enemy systems, even if they are no longer in visual range on the main map? I want to be able to see a map similar to the SE IV map, showing who is where or has claimed which systems.

I would have to agree

I think this is a good point and should be on an enhancement list out there. If the map could at least mark a system which had an enemy base and keep that mark even if another empire comes in and wipes out that base (Fog of war). This way we can at least have a better mark of our territory and someone else's territory.

that would be great

Time

While I agree with the suggestion about the minimap (and the enlargement suggestion), eveyone has to know that SEV needs more time. SEIV was just as confusing when I started to play it. I'll even wager that when SEVI comes out everyone will complain that SEV was better and easier to understand.

Given more time (not that, that is a good excuse) this game will give most of the people everythign they need in a 4X type game.

You are most likely correct. It's just frustrating when apparently simple things that were in the 4th incarnation of the game are not in the 5th incarnation. It just makes one wonder whether whether testers ever said, "Hey, I can't tell where my colonies are on the mini map." I would've found it hard to get past gaining my second system if that happened to me. Or maybe I'm just overlooking the obvious.

In response

I understand what your saying. However; from reading other forum post on similar topics, I have discovered that the beta testers mentioned tons of things. With only one person truly working on the game (and yes I believe it should have waited to be released) I think he did a damn impress job.

When you also think about the amount of work that went into SEIV, it is hard to duplicate especially in an age where computer gamers are very hard to please. You can't just throw a new coat of paint on a game ans say here. You need to add the content. Sometimes you just forget to add the content.

Map

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Wed, 2007-01-10 15:20.

Getting the map at least back to SE:IV standards was mentioned numerous times (in fact, the icons for marking systems by empire colour on the map are even included with every flag set)so it's on MM's to-do list. A few gentle reminders via e-mail will probably bump it closer to the top of the list... hint hint...

Off the topic a bit...

Submitted by pikcachu20 on Wed, 2007-01-10 15:52.

But I wonder how many emails a day can one person read from people complaining about his product. That's got to be disheartening. I know it is the only way to get things fixed, and I realize other companies (like Stardock) are quick to respond to forums and emails.... But still a one man shop has it's limits.

this is why i never get mad whenever i find a problem in the game. i mean if *I* had to face the ocean of complexities in making a 4x game i think my head would xplode monty python style. i wonder how many ppl were behind Stars!. i loved that game but i think this one is much better. hell u could blow up a star on this one!

My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

So when the enemies ask me for financial assistance, intelligence assistance, etc., and I reply with 'Accept Request' what exactly takes place?
