SE5 on linux

Submitted by Quantum on Mon, 2007-01-01 12:22. Space Empires V General

Im in the process of kicking windows off of my computer. Before I make the final decision, is anyone here using linux as the OS? I just want to make sure that SE5 will work with Vector or Ubuntu.

Last I heard

It uses DirectX, so you have to emulate it. Last I heard neither WINE nor Cedega can run SEV.

Emulation runs MASSIVELY

Submitted by Destroyer224 on Mon, 2007-01-01 20:40.

Emulation runs MASSIVELY slow. I had to deal with it while I was trying to fix a problem with DirectX and I was getting 1.5 fps with a dual core 2.4. And don't make me talk about the combat... 2 ships ran at what seemed like a quarter of an fps. And yes, SE5 uses both processors, they had problems with dual cores in early testing and designed it to utilize both of them, mostly.

Wine and Cedega are not

Submitted by Fyron on Mon, 2007-01-01 20:51.

Wine and Cedega are not emulators. They provide win32 and DirectX-like APIs to run win32 applications, but they do not emulate anything in the sense of Vmware and Virtual PC.

From what Pheonix-D said, he

From what Pheonix-D said, he does not believe WINE or Cedega will work with SE5, and the only other option is using RGB emulation, but that is amzingly slow, as I pointed out in my earlier post.
