Brother can You spare a Dime?

Submitted by Omnius on Thu, 2006-12-28 10:09. Space Empires V General

I've got one AI, which I've got a treaty with, in my 1.20 game that keeps asking me for a loan or any form of economic assistance. I've tried replying by giving it a gift of resources but am always rebuked, even when I offered 100,000 minerals. I've tried replying with a counter treaty proposal to add trade to our existing treaty of 10%-30% of trade but it refuses that as well. It has asked numerous times and numerous times I've tried to give it something only to be refused. I finally hit upon the "Accept Request" option and that seems to make the AI happy even though it gets nothing.

I also found that the other surviving AI has been pestering me about having a treaty with the other AI and as long as I use the "Accept Request" answer it seems mollified and tells me I'm a good ally, even though I've done nothing to stop my treaty with the other AI.

It seems that the "Accept Request" option is the great panacea of mollifying pestering AI's. I sure hope that the routine for AI's asking for an economic loan or assistance is made better so that we can give it aid through gifts or trade proposals. Right now it seems nonsensical since the AI seems to not be able to remember it wants aid of any form yet turns down gifts.

Yes, I came up with the same solution/approach long ago. Anything you send is met with a "your gift angers us" message. But simply clicking on "Accept Request" will ALWAYS make them happy.

Have fun with this aspect until they fix it.

Accept Request does keep them out of your hair but why stop there? Before you hit "send message", add your own personal touch. My favorite message to type in is "Send me the head of your first born and your prettiest wife as payment." The replies to the insulting requests are hilarious.

Death, destruction, mayhem and confusion. Another perfect day.

The AI is baffling. I can't think of any logical reason WHY you would normally refuse free stuff for any reason, even free useless stuff (except maybe certain technologies where increasing them at the wrong time can actually be bad). I mean, FREE STUFF, people.

Heh. I've never tried that. And here I was thinking meson cannons were the answer to everything.

The AI seems only able to understand "anger". As you can imagine, something that reacts to all decisions purely out of anger is not capable of making any kind of logical decision. To give some kind of semblance of sense, the AI would also have to understand "fear". This is why it is nearly impossible to ever make peace with an AI after a war starts: The more you kick his ass, the angrier he becomes, even when he should have rightly become terrified after his entire battlefleet just got annihilated by a garbage barge. A sensible opponent might be thinking that peace sounds like a good idea right about now. GalCiv 2 AI, for instance, could correctly recognize when his efforts at aggression had simply earned him a pain facial. He might not have LIKED you any better after that, but at least he could be taught to fear you.

Having Fun with Diplomacy

Submitted by Omnius on Fri, 2006-12-29 10:25.

I've found the AI's better at diplomacy in SE5 over SE4, well more prolific anyway. I've found that sometimes it's okay to accept little poison pills from the AI's. One treaty I got to trade research early on and both me and that AI shot ahead nicely in techs. The catch was I couldn't have treaties with the other AI's but that was okay since there were only two others.

After that AI went ballistic and declared war on me the other two AI's got busy offering me treaties. Both wanted to trade minefield codes and I figured that was cool since I had no minefields. One asked for no star destruction and I figured that was okay since I was far from getting stellar manipulation techs to do that and I could cancel the treaty when I decided to blow some stars up anyway.

They pick random treaties I think

Submitted by Destroyer224 on Fri, 2006-12-29 13:46.

If you notice, there's a drop down menu and dice icon to the right of the treaty name box. If you pick a name or press the random dice, it will change the treaty name AND elements as long as you have never picked that name. If you have picked that name, it will be the elements you had last selected. I'm pretty sure this is how they choose what elements to put in the treaty, so if you modify what the messages contain, you can modify what the AI has in its treaties. (don't quote me on this though)

Treay name has no effect

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Fri, 2006-12-29 13:53.

The AI chooses treaty terms randomly based on anger levels only. The treaty name is randomly chosen beforehand and has no effect on the treaty's content.

Is there a set script for AI treaties?

Submitted by Destroyer224 on Fri, 2006-12-29 13:57.

Is there any sort of script that determines what treaties they pick and why? Maybe you could modify it and make AI diplomacy not so bizzare in the Balance Mod.

Balance Mod AI Diplomacy

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Fri, 2006-12-29 14:00.

It's already been changed in the Balance Mod. The AI will offer more appropriate terms in its treaties that are also appropriately titled. Sticking out tongue
