The art of diplomacy (and some other questions)

Submitted by richie on Thu, 2006-12-21 16:20. Space Empires V General

Ok, I admit I haven't play too much before 1.20, rather I tested it few times. But now I want to start real campaign, and... yes, diplomacy. How behave to make friends, when use which message tone, what gifts are good (I tend to make them more angry with mine) and finally how to get this colony tech exchange Smiling

Come to think about it - if I conquere their planets using my troops are there any chances I will capture their techs (like for example in Master of Orion)?

And last question - does lack of space port in system has any influence on research/intel production? I mean, do I still need space port if in particular system have only research/intel facilities?

I play 1.20 with Balance Mod 1.01

‹ WARNING: Stellar Manipulation all fugged up in 1.20, good news is you can fix it yourself very easily How do you destroy a crippled ship? ›

one space port per system

One space port per system required as if you don’t every thing produced on colonies in the system is cut off from the rest of the empire and of no use

Space Ports

Submitted by Rilbur on Thu, 2006-12-21 17:00.

A space port allows anythign produced locally, be it intel, research, or resources, to reach the empire. The reverse isn't true, resources find their way to wherever they are needed by magic.

diplomacy

Submitted by thedude on Thu, 2006-12-21 19:22.

There are only a few ways to get tech from another player that I can think of:

1) get them to surrender to you
2) capture their ships and analyse them
3) get them to give you tech as a gift

(I don't think you can steal tech with intel, but I'm not sure)

Capturing a planet with troops will never get you any tech.

As far as the diplomacy goes...I haven't had much luck with it being consistant. You may want to wait for a few more patches before you attempt much diplomacy with computer players. guns are working better at the moment.

Unfortunatly capturing

Submitted by cordas on Thu, 2006-12-21 19:59.

Unfortunatly capturing planets doesn't give any techs, the aliens are obviously sensible enough to burn their libarys when they see your troops burning through the sky in their drop pods.

You can "steal" techs using intel, but its rare you actually steal a full tech in my experience you seem to get between 50% and 99% of the research required to get to the next level.

You can always setup a tech trading treaty, I try to do this with every race I setup a treaty with. I tend to do mutual tech swaps at either everything including racial (you can only get racial techs if you have the same racail trait as the other empire, there is no way to gain these traits or techs in game *SIGH*), or 2 levels old (particularly if I have all 3 colony types and they don't). It is fairly easily to convince most races to give you all its techs, but this is a bit too much like cheating for me and tends to tilt the game far too much in my favour, so I do mutual swaps so I can help them out and make them a better threat when war comes as it inevitably does.

For information

Tech stealing through Intel is done through "Sabotage - Empire Wide". A lot of the time, somethign else will be done, e.g. blowing up resources or such.

Isn't it a bug? Either manual or common sense suggest tech stealing should be under Espionage - Empire Wide.

Thank you for all the replies.
