Submitted by Unole on Tue, 2006-12-19 11:44.

This is interesting. I upgraded to 5.1.20 and resumed my latest game. My empire race portrait has been changed to Xi-Chung. My other two saved games have completely different race portraits. Everything else is correct. The right flag, the correct ships, just the race portrait is changed.

When I started a new game and loaded my empire, everything comes back to normal. But I don't want to go back 34.3 years to start over. Ugh! So now I'm playing with humanoid ants. Which is kind of funny but I wish I could get my people back.

Death, destruction, mayhem and confusion. Another perfect day.

I think we may have still a killer bug. In my only 1.20 game, we were being 9 empires. Midgame, 2 new ones appeared, and since then no load or save were possible; the save seemed corrupt.

Frigates and Baseships

Submitted by redbullbear68 on Tue, 2006-12-19 21:22.

I just started a new 1.2 game with the Balance Mod 1.0 (+the Mount sort tweak thingie) and for the first time I chose breathable atmos only for colonization. When I went to build my first ship I had the choice of Frigate, Colony Ship, Freighter or.... Baseship.

Sure enough I'm building my own star destroyer out of the gate and it's kinda humorous.

Anybody else? Bug ya think?

Unable to save game

Submitted by warhawke on Tue, 2006-12-19 22:42.

I got the same thing. This is a major game breaker and I hope they fix it soon. Not being able to save in a game like this and/or having to revert to a saved game from an hour ago is more than frustrating. I hope tracking this down gets immediate and undivided attention. I was doing nothing unusual that I can think of. Was just playing along and started getting unable to save errors on the autosaves. It almost seemed to me like maybe they forgot to close the file after they wrote to it. Just a thought.

PS I did not notice any new races showing up. ie No new player turn bars at the end of turn anyway.

I switched my Balance Mod from 1.0 to 1.01 and I still have baseships available. It's darn fun. Upgrades seem to be problematic though. When you are given the choice of what to upgrade you ship to, you get of all the ships that currently exist. Sticking out tongue Umm... no.

Problem with 1.17 saves in 1.20??

Submitted by Darken on Wed, 2006-12-20 11:20.

I've carried on a game from 1.17, there's about 10 empires in it now, however now every 2nd turn the game freezes on the 'processing all players' blue bar, and the game has to be restarted. Anyone else getting this? This is all very annoying and they’re was no mention of previous saves not working, I'm new to SEV but I'd like to see it actually working! Smiling

A friend of mine had the exact same problem with v1.00 yet I could not reproduce it with my downloaded version. He sent me his copy of Balance Mod and sure enough, I could reproduce the Baseship bug, but when I gave mine to him, he no longer could get instant Baseships. I've no idea how it happened despite me doing some quick copy/pasting of individual data files around.

My old friend reinstall

Submitted by redbullbear68 on Wed, 2006-12-20 16:10.

I have reinstalled everything from the ground up and all is good now. Not only did I have Baseships from the get go but any ship and/or fighter would hippity hop over and around it like it was a planet. Then the Baseship would start to jump too, driving the whole battle into the sky where you couldn't see it happen! That's some kind of fun.

The AI does use fighters in carriers away from planets, just unfortunatly this is a rather rare occasion, they are slightly more likely to launch them in planetry defence but they often keep them on the ground to fight off troops at which they are very good at, at higher levels they have far more tonnage available to them than troops.

I haven't done a single planet assault yet, but I suppose I'd flatten the planet before even thinking of dropping someone without having air superiority so...

I miss carrier wars. Right now, it seems to me, once you send out a squadron (24 fighters) of torpedo bombers (fighters with heavy rockets), one of fighter-bombers and one of air superiority figheters (my usual carrier complement combination) you can pretty much dominate a system.

Anyway, it's already better than before, when the Ai didn't seem to think of PD at all, now I thikn it was a bit tweaked that way (BM)

Submitted by tverdoon on Thu, 2006-12-21 14:31.

I'm using the Steam version, patched to 1.20 with Balance Mod 1.01 starting from a fresh game and I get an endless turn update around turn 8-9. Restarting and reloading the last savegame doesn't help it nor does cancelling my build queues or ship movement orders (hey, I tried it just in case.) I have to think of myself as a glass half full kind of guy but after however many months I've yet to have a decent game of Space Empires 5. The last patch was most successful for me with no really showstopper bugs but the AI is too stoopid.

Not Too Bad

Submitted by _squeege_ on Thu, 2006-12-21 16:38.

Well, I'm further than I've been able to get up until now. Still have a major issue with memory leaks (38 MB after load, 176 MB after 1 turn!), but as long as I restart every 6 or 7 turns, it's running good.

The balance mod is coming along quite well, and makes the game actually playable. My only complaint is that research does become useless after 30 years or so, but I'll probably create a diff patch to fix that for my own playing.

Hopefully, the next patch will finally kill the memory leak issue.

Same old problems

Submitted by Cdnawacs on Sun, 2006-12-24 11:56.

Applied the 1.20 patch and resumed my previous game. So far, the only difference I see is that when I go to upgrade a ship, a popup now appears that asks me to confirm which ships are to be upgraded. Glad to see it!

However... Races still always refuse to surrender... Still encounter game crashes when I go into strategic combat, and select "Speed X8" before hitting the "start" button... Game still goes into rapid "stutter" mode after playing a while.

As a result, I'm still disappointed.

Other Upgrade/Change Suggestions:

1. Any possibility of being able to run SE V in something higher than 1024 x 768? The game looks very poor on my 24" LCD monitor.
2. I like the expanded research, but when you spend a kazillion points on research, only to find that (for example) the new mine is only 1 unit bigger than the previous model, it seems like a real waste of time and research. I think this should definitely be reworked.
3. Speaking of research... I far prefer the previous (SEIV) option of creating a linear research queue, where the program would research items one after another, instead of having to click, click, click, click away to set precise percentages. The new (SE V) method is annoying and fatiguing.

(No doubt these ideas should go onto a different thread somewhere on this website...)

Well -- if you want to get on to Medium or Large sized mines, you have to continue researching the bloody things. Since there's nothing that I can add into my existing mine that is "1 kiloton" in size, then the added research is useless.

I guess, then, that my point is: Make the minimum increments = 5 kt. That way, you actually gain the benefit of being able to add at least an extra plate of armour. Otherwise, additional research is either totally useless or a "delay of game".

1.20 has sats working better

Submitted by TheThirdEye on Mon, 2006-12-25 00:48.

The launch/recover window works much better now.

It still crashes when recovering sats remotely.

I'm frustrated that I can't select older tech to put on ships and units. And that the ship/unit design is cleared when you set/change the size.

Yes Mines gain a useless amount of space. With WP's you at least get 10 each time, something you can use. (50 would be better, and even).
Heavy Carriers have a worse problem they are only slightly (50 I think) larger than a carrier at the same level, but they lose 2 engines. Means Heavy Carriers are never worth building if you plan to have them move with fast fleets.

With most games, you might have a point. With this one, you don't.

Try making a mod, and you'll quickly see why -- the game will spit out any sytax mistakes instantly, leaving you with the only concern of "gigo" mistakes like techs that don't exist Laughing out loud It shouldn't be possible to crash the game with the data files.

Instead of becoming a "true gamer" (however defined or whatever sort of accomplishment that could possibly represent), perhaps spending some time to learn some etiquette or even how to spell might be a good idea. Submitted by Emtwo on Mon, 2007-01-01 23:26.

I had a colony ship out of supply, so I fleeted it up with a Frigate. Then I gave the fleet orders to colonize a nearby planet.

The frigate was used as the colony materials! The colony ship (and its colonist cargo) remained in orbit, but I had people on the planet as well. I then used that to colonize another planet one orbit ring closer to the sun. Anyone seen this behavior before?

I love this game and think it is one of the best on the market. It takes real imagination and patience. If you want a simple 1st person shooter to satisfy your short attention span then play something else. I'm a noob and I haven't had a decent game yet BUT this is the 5th game in a series. Obviously, someone is doing something right. If I understand correctly SE-IV took some years to be bebugged. Well, be patient. Constructive critisism is alway helpfull, but go cry someplace else. I wish I had the skills to help Aaron, but I don't. So, I bought his game and hope he can make his dream come true and SE-V will be at its best.

Not new but it doesn’t happen all that often I haven’t seen it at all and I started with 1.13. The original mention of it involved all the ships in the fleet being used up in colonizing. What version are you using?
