Steam: Server down?

Submitted by crward on Fri, 2006-12-15 12:37. Space Empires V General

Hmm. Steam server seems to be down. Surprisingly, this seems to mean that I can't run the game offline either.

Like many other internet widgets, it's nice until it doesn't work.

I'm SO happy I bought

Submitted by Helker on Fri, 2006-12-15 15:50.

I'm SO happy I bought the boxed version... Anyway... I'm sorry but I fear that you have to wait that Steam solves its problems and goes back up again...

Steam was worth a try. But only one...

Submitted by crward on Fri, 2006-12-15 16:38.

Yes, Steam seemed like a good idea at the time... but I've yet to see what happens when it auto-patches in the middle of my games, and it's very odd that having the server down prevents me from playing while offline.

Badly thought out.

Yes, a storm is affecting Steam

Submitted by Halikar on Fri, 2006-12-15 18:43.

There's a blizzard hitting the north-western US that's taken out power in several areas, including Seattle. My understanding is that Steam's servers are all affected, and there is no ETA for when they will be getting power back.

Lots of Problems with Steam

Submitted by kev5x5 on Sat, 2006-12-16 06:59.

Wish I had bought the boxed version. Steam has all kinds of problems, including a bug that doesn't allow it to log on the first time, on my computer. I usually have to retry a couple times before it works. And now, they are having server problems. I'd say they are a bad choice.

Here's the thing: If you

Submitted by amerelium on Sat, 2006-12-16 07:08.

Here's the thing: If you have purchased the game from steam, u have paid your dues to the DEVS. Feel, if not free, but not to guilty, about downloading a boxed copy from the net and install...

Buy a boxed copy

Submitted by evilginger on Sat, 2006-12-16 08:16.

I would buy a boxed copy as its well worth it and the advantages it confers over steam are considerable. Not to mention the free copy of Star fury which more than worth the money in itself. It also gives the game more support which it deserves and I am not above buying multiple copies of games I like and inviting friends around to corrupt them as I have a net work of Rescue computers SEIV an SEV are ideal for this. No I do not regard this as rewarding Aaron for a mistake which was after all the same one you made in buying it from steam in the first place which is that it sounded like a good idea at the time.

same old logic

Submitted by evirus on Sat, 2006-12-16 11:13.

steam is one of those programs that gives more reasons to pirate then it prevents. i was realy ticked off last night when i tried to play counter strike i mean i bought the friggen game and they dont trust me enough to let me play it offline when i want to? i mean sure the auto patching feature is cool but come on. the second the anti piracy tool becomes so inconvient that it obstructs play... you loose. same thing with F.E.A.R and my vitrual drives(which i use so i dont have to lug cd's back and forth from university to home)

No patience, other games

Submitted by crward on Sat, 2006-12-16 12:46.

I'm looking at a number of other games as well... it'll be hard to justify re-buying SEV with Battles in Italy/battlefront, Twilight Struggle, and Combat Commander demanding my attention. We'll see.
