Rick's map generator

Rick, What exactly have you provided to the SEV community. I'm sure there was a little time spent on this, but there isn't any literature provided. Just license stuff.

What is your program generating? A map I presume. How can we change the varibles in the map creation process.

Is this just a beta release (partially functioning)?

I see the .jc files, they appear to be ones you'd edit, to create different maps, but what would you open one of these .jc files with?

I'm looking forward to a map editor that we can actually edit with. I'm not trying to be offensive here. You just need to give a little more explanation with what you've provided. There's more explanatin of your scriping language jewelscript...

Sorry for not replying earlier. I had not seen your post - I don't frequent this site but I do lurk on the IRC channel.

What my tool does is generate map files that can be loaded by SE5. It is not a map editor per se. The version provided on this site is very early and I began work on loading SE5 data files to make generation easier but have not made anything that is stable yet.

The idea was to eventually have a tool which does something similar to the in-game map generator - only it would be tweakable and extendable in any way.

Rick, is there any way that you can share more technical info about the way the map is encoded after generate it?. I think it's compressed with zlib, but not sure... I'm making some tests on my own, using zlib 1.1.4 (the version that comes with SE5)and VB6, to make some kind og GUI for a map editor, and I can't see the light yet... Thank you for any tip Smiling

I mean: if I take your Testgeneration.map, how can I revert it to the state where it can be opened and I can see the star names i.e.?

Thanks again

Re: Rick's map generator

There is not much need to hack the file format anymore; as of 1.33, there is a map compiler utility that will compile a text data file representation of a map into a SE5 .map file. Any map editor should work with this text format, then invoke the compiler to make a final .map file only when it is completed.

Wonder if we could petition MM to make a map decompiler, to create these text files from a map...

Thanks Fyron. I havent's seen the map compiler you talk about yet, but I'll look for it around the 1.33 files.
And thanks again for the quick response.

I can't find that "map compiler", at least in the 1.33 Patch Files. Can you tell me where can I find it? Thank you

Ditto here. I looked in "history.txt", and found the entry for version 1.26 which states that a MapCompiler has been added to the utilities. However, my utilities folder does not contain MapCompiler.

I went further and searched the entire SE5 folder structure for all .exe files. No map compiler was found. I see se5, ScriptParser, ShipSetViewer, and TechChart.

I just did a search of the entire folder and found NO map compiler. If it's there it is either integrated into another program, or is called something unusual.

I suppose it could be a menu item in another program...

I feel kind of dumb, I just figured out that those .jc files will open with notepad...
and there is some kind of script.

Hmm... looks like Aaron didn't put it in the public patch. Time to see what's up with that...
