SE IV Deluxe Launch Issues

Submitted by Kiernan on Mon, 2006-12-11 00:16. Technical Support

I just ordered and downloaded the complete version Space Empires IV Deluxe from Strategy First yesterday. I ran through the installation and the game appeared to find the registration key without any problems. However, When I open the application and select play, the game window closes and it appears that the application has closed. But in reality, the application is still running in the background as se4.exe using 50% of my cpu processing capacity, but nothing is happening and I can't play the game. I am using an HP computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a Pentium 4 HT processor with 1GB of RAM.
Has anyone else seen this problem? The computer has an intel graphics card and I updated the driver to make sure that wasn't the problem. I also confirmed that .mp3 files are associated with the Microsoft Media Player app in case that was messing something up. I am looking forward to playing the game, but so far no luck.
As additional information, in case it is related, I also downloaded both v1 and v1.08 of the SE:V demo and once the game program was launched, all I got was a black screen and the computer was completely unresponsive. I couldn't even CTRL+ALT+DEL out of it. Had to reboot the system manually from the power switch.

Any help is appreciated!
Kiernan

"Intel Graphics Card"

Submitted by Rilbur on Mon, 2006-12-11 11:08.

FYI, but I sincerely doubt you have an intel graphics card. What you almost certainly have is onboard video memory, which is a totally different beast.

Yet another reason to DESPISE HP. Especially since they probably didn't install the PCI-E or AGP port you'd need to get a video card in it. I know they didn't when I had an HP.

Not sure what you're problem is, though.

Was able to resolve problem

Submitted by Kiernan on Wed, 2006-12-13 03:46.

Amazingly, I was able to resolve the problem (or at least get around it) by having my computer emulate Windows 2000 when launching Space Empires IV. I was at least able to play a game.
The Strategy First tech support did try to help and game some suggestions for how to resolve them. Unfortunately, only the emulation change seemed to fix the problem. So I don't know if it was related to the Intel chipset/lack of separate video card, Windows XP SP2, or CPU Hyper Threading or what.

Hopefully that information will help someone else who runs into a similar problem.

Odd

You got it to work? Good for you!

edit (I'm an idiot and was thinking SEV):

Its odd that changing the thing to emulation worked. I'm going to guess some piece of code didn't survive... the test of time.
